You also can't turn it off for when you're the only ship at Range 1...
Doesn't matter, you must choose one ship other than yourself. And as you have no friendly ships everyone is fair game.

Forgot that parenthetical! It's a lot better than I thought it was!
Suddenly, you can team up with someone else to take out a ship neither of you could have jousted against (like Baron Fel, or Whisper).
Seriously, if I'm flying a shuttle or something, hit me to hit that bastard. I won't mind.

Pair up with a regenerator for even better results.
We usually play 35 point furballs at my store (when we play furballs). I'm actually quite excited for some new 35-point ships on the horizon:
Luke Skywalker (28)
-R2-D2 (4)
-Lone Wolf (2)
-Integrated Astromech (0)
TOTAL: 34
Wedge Antilles (29)
-BB8 (2)
-Push the Limit (3)
-Integrated Astromech (0)
TOTAL: 34
As you can see, we haven't banned any cards in this format, but we do have a small-ship-only restriction. These two certainly are powerful, but I don't feel they are much worse than the good Baron himself.
But I think the trick to keeping furballs fun is to not settle on the best points. By switching up the point limit often, you can see a wide variety of ships on the table.
One flavor I like is you give everyone 3 ships, one that costs 30, one 35, and one 40. Since Lone Wolf is a unique upgrade, only one of them can have it, so you make players do something different (Also, limited to 1 regen effect per player). When each ship is destroyed, they can deploy a new one before the next Planning Phase, and you award points based on kills and eliminations (plus some bonus for Last Man Standing).
I'm gonna pitch to my my FLGS owner tonight about making one of his monthly tournaments Furball. (He usually alternates, 1 normal, 1 "fun." Last fun one I played in was 100 point lists, but all cards, ships, and Pilot Skills are unique.)
Also, totally necro'd this thread...
I have only hosted one tournament, 37 pts, 60 minutes in 3 rounds, 8 players (total 16). 2 tables played. Second and third rounds we allocated in order 1st place to table one, 2nd place to table two, etc all the way down to mix up the players and we kept points across all 3 rounds Also allowed a vote for bans only banning Lone Wolf. Some wanted Advanced Cloaking Device to be banned but not enough to implement. Used pre-printed score sheets to keep track of damage, kills, and deaths.
Feedback afterwards was extremely positive except time needs to be 75 minutes. Another strong suggestion is to reduce points to 35 or 33. I think the sweet spot is 33-37 small ship only. 40 may be to elite while 37 or even 35 would give more ships an opportunity to play.

Edited by rilesmanthere was a local furball a few weeks ago and they capped it at 30. Which i found to be way too little as unless you brought something as silly as a Striker (which would melt in this setting) youre going to run a naked ship or a horribly undercosted ship. Almost every small ship thats capable of holding their own is mid30s. I dont really think Soontir would be a problem either as people would just team up on him immediately and hes not that awesome when hes got 3+ things shooting at him (which is why hes a nonexistant factor in epic)
Digging up a dead thread a second time...
How is initiative resolved for free-for-all games such as this? Say you have three players with a PS9 ship at 35 points, they can't all wait to see where the other has gone before moving.
