If only 1 IG-88, Which One?

By Farseerixirvost, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I currently only have a single Aggressor. Trying to decide which IG88 is better on its own.

It appears B is rather popular. I also personally like the added mobility options of the D.

A and C both strike me as fairly situational.

Is there a general consensus on IG88 rankings?

I like using the D.

But seriously depends on the squad you build around it and its role in the squad.

I prefer both B and C. B is similar to a built in gunner which is good as even if you wanted gunner there's no crew slot for it. C is situational, however I like to use it as a jouster along with 3 khiraxz cartel marauders ( 2 equipped with glitterstim). I try and boost my way into range 1 and the evade you get with it helps nullify some of the return fire. Not very conventional to run an upgrade less ig-88 as most fill one or both cannon slots, but it has been effective for me. If you don't have that many khiraxzs, using ig-88 c with one cartel marauder w/ Stim alongside scum Boba w/ PTL works well jousting too.

B is the most 'powerful' since strong offense generally trumps strong defense (the only exceptions is when offense just isn't strong enough).

A and C are fairly situational. D is fun and quite effective with advanced sensors, although your opponent can place asteroids in a way to limit his shenanigans...

B, if you get cannon. C, if you cheap on that one, but get advanced sensors. D otherwise. A is almost never seen.

I would go for B - hands down!

Yes, B and C are the most common. I've used D also once or twice and it's fun and surprises the opponent usually. I think A could be strong, as a finisher, shooting last on an already weak ennemy ship to gain its shield.

I would go with B if you want max out your fire power or C if you like to get free evade after boost. Both are good, but very good together!

If you're only using one IG-88, definitely IGB with HLC and FCS; his damage output is basically action-independent which is a huge advantage. Everyone else is much more worried about keeping their actions for offence, while B just straight up doesn't care; you can bump, Boost, K-Turn, and Sloop with impunity because you will have a 4-dice TL attack almost every time. This means the rest of your upgrade slots have a lot more flexibility: EPT can be something tangentially beneficial like VI or Expert Handling or Outmanoeuvre, instead of PtL or Predator, and you can muck around with your Illicit slot more freely as well, be it Dampeners, Feedback, Hotshot, or even a Deadman Switch (I'm partial to Feedback in case of squiggly buggers like Fel and Whisper).

C and D are great options as well but fly very differently, and I find them much more effective together or paired with B. They also tend to stick to Predator or PtL with Glitterstim because their damage output normally relies so heavily on being able to Focus or TL. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but given IG-88's fickle midrange PS I find the only way to really make sure you get your actions require Advance Sensors (or Accuracy Corrector to otherwise ignore action reliance).

If you have something that can make up for Iggy's PS6, like VI Kath or Boba, it isn't as big a deal, or if you bring an Intel Agent or two you can find your way around a PS disadvantage, but overall I find IGB with HLC and FCS to have the perfect blend of dodging and blocking that doesn't in any way knock down his terrifying attack power.
