Casually Flying Away

By hothie, in X-Wing

Any FLGS's in your area that hold regular events? Surely you could make it one night a week.

Yes, we play normally on Monday nights.

But here's the thing. If I keep playing, then I will be spending money buying new ships, maps, and whatever else comes out in the near future. Then Store Championships come around, and I end up going to 3+ of those, then Regionals come around, and I end up going to 5+ of those, on top of the many other tournaments I attend throughout the year. And by the end of the year, I've spent thousands of dollars and many weekends devoted to this game.

That's where I have been for the past 3 years. I know this. I get it. It's better for me to mothball the ships now than to end up spending more thousands of dollars year after year playing this game. That time and money needs to be devoted to moving on with my life, so that's the tough decision that I have had to make.

I know that I can't just hang out with the guys once a week, because it will never be just that for me. It will always be more, looking forward to SC season, then Regionals season, then Worlds, on so on. I have to cut the cycle now if I hope to move on. Otherwise I never will. I know this.

Just remember, the forum is free :)

Good luck with your LEGO business. There are definitely worse things to give up xwing for.

Hope you come back once the business takes off. We'll need to play a rematch to break that 1-1 record sometime :)

I have enjoyed your posts on these boards since the game was new and was a lurker on most of the old SWM boards as well so I have been familiar with you through the boards for quite some time, I can completely understand your reasons for packing it away. Good luck good sir and thank you for all you have brought to this game and all the ways you have helped shape this community, you will be missed on these boards.

Well,

Have fun running a Lego shop dude!

Good luck with your business. There's always a spot for lego's in the off topic section... ;)

Also you could hang your fleet from your ceiling in your brick and mortar store or something cool like that.

At least keep one ship on your office desk.

Take care of yourself Hothie, I guess thats what you're best at isnt it?

;)

(If this part gets edited by a mod, that's fine) My business is called Ankeny Construction Toys, and you can find my inventory on bricklink.com. Basically I buy and sell LEGO bricks and sets. I will be working toward having a fully functional website within the next year, and possibly a brick and mortar store within the next 5.

Bricklink, eh? I'll have to look you up next time I'm thinking about placing an order. I hope your dreams succeed: life is so much better with LEGO!

P.S. I just checked out your store, and those are some competitive prices! You tempt me, Sir :)

Thanks for everything you've done for us and many others, my friend. I know we'll stay in touch but you will be missed. Best of luck in all your endeavors to you and your wonderful family.

It feels like the galaxy has shifted a bit...

It feels like the galaxy has shifted a bit...

It's as if thousands of gamers cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

But seriously, I know exactly what hothie is saying about quitting cold turkey, I'm the same way. Best of luck balancing the business with family and everything else! I imagine that without X-Wing that goes from impossible to just difficult.

Good luck in the Lego business!

My basement, well, part of it at least. The 2 black file cabinets are just for the Star Wars set books.

Say it ain't so Doug! The game will be just a bit less without you in it man!

As one of the crew you normally fly with, we're really going to miss you. You'll always have a spot on the table Monday nights in case you ever get the itch :)

Thanks for all the great moments, memories, and insights Doug. Best of luck with your new adventures!

Gonna run some Dash (crew) builds soon in memoriam.

I'm brand-new to X-Wing and have probably only seen a fraction of your writing, but I've loved everything I've seen. The great thing about the internet is that all the wisdom you've shared here on these forums will continue to benefit people, regardless of whether you continue playing or not. And although the meta is always shifting, because FFG has done such a good job so far in keeping things reasonably balanced, your comments from a few years ago are still relevant today.

So, you're making the right decision for you, and all the effort you've put into the game will continue to benefit others for a long time. That's a win/win in my book!

Good luck next week and thank you.

I really enjoyed dash crew on Miranda when I flew that. Unobstructed tlt shots ftw!

And thank you to everyone for your well wishes.

Dash is tied for my favourite Miranda crew with R2-D2! TLT behind a rock at Range 3? Yes please! 3 green dice with a K-Wing is just not fair.

We never met formally, but the community and I will miss your articles, enthusiasm and all you have done.

Good luck with your business. When you get a site up/working please let me know. My 5yo son and I are big time LEGO geeks together. Just the other day I was toying with the idea of trying to do the new TFA T-70 kit in blue/white instead of the stock Black/Orange that I already own. A LEGO repaint, if you will. The blockage being I don't know where to buy all the individual pieces yet. I would love to help increase your business if I could. =)

Seriously you can do both. I used to be active duty and even when deployed AND working 12 hour shifts we found time for games like Axis and allies. As this was pre. X-wing..But good luck with your endeavors. We would frequently have to leave the game set up and only play a few turns At a time but it was useful to pass the time.

But Hothie! You were the chosen one! You were supposed to bring Casual to X-wing! Not leave it in Darkness

You were my brother, Jim. I loved you. (probably shouldn't let that get out...)

Oh my God! Hothie really fell to the dark side!!!

Apparently the universe is not without a sense of humour as I heard that for Doug's final game it was against his longtime practice buddy Commander Scrappy. What a way to go out.

It was a pleasure to meet you Doug at Worlds this year and I hoped to play across from you in at least one round but it was not to be. Good luck on your lego startup and enjoy your retirement and family time.

I don't know who you are or where you came from. But you seem like a cool guy. Good luck.
