(Un)Lucky Stories

By JarJarBot, in X-Wing

In the past two weeks of play I've definietely had my fair share of lucky and unlucky moments and just wanted to share them and read others experiences in the game!

Last Week:

Play testing Super Dash against the list that would win the tournament, first crit on Dash; Immediately discard secondary weapon, ouch.

Tonight:

Running Oicunn/Whisper first official new damage deck night, first crit on Oicunn; landing on ships or obstacles after movement=damage, second crit; all damage is delt face up!

Whisper throws 5 Dice Range 1...1 hit...

But!

Whisper throws 4 Dice and One Hits Biggs!

Also last week my friend One Shot Fel (SD, AT, etc) with a Gunnered Kenkirk, hah!

Please share and enjoy!

In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.

Pr(5 red dice = all blank) = (2/8)^5 = 1 in 1024.

Pr(4 red dice = all crits) = (1/8)^4 = 1 in 4096.
Pr(5 green dice = all blank) = (3/8)^5 =~ 1 in 135.

Play enough games, throw enough dice and you will eventually observe the outcomes that are a few standard deviations away from the mean!

'Luck' is adding a story to the result. :)

I rolled more blank red dice in two rounds last night than in the last 5 it seems. Range one Soontir with Focus, eyeball, blank, blank, blank. Next time: hit, blank, blank, blank. Next time range two, full blanks--let's not even talk about Vader's rolls.

We're talking good shots, decent flying, limiting shots to one arc or TLT. It was just frustrating flying well and not being able to roll anything. He even parked on a rock and was able to escape with only one damage! The one he took from parking! So frustrating...

Last tournament. My Vader against his Fel. Face to face, with them barely not touching. I attack. 3 crits, +1 from ATC. Feeling good. Fel rolled 4 natural evades. #$#$#$^#$^&*#$#

At a game store tournament. Had a cluster of TIEs with a couple random named pilots and a bomber. Facing a fully loaded Falcon and Ten Numb. Lined up all my guys, did some nice damage to the Falcon, bomber gets an ion pulse missile off. Next turn my bomber flies into the perfect spot to drop a prox mine infront of the Ion'd falcon. I activate my full health, stealth deviced Dark Curse, he clips the prox mine template, hit/hit/direct hit. The rest of my guys died to very poor evade rolls not long after.

Play testing Super Dash against the list that would win the tournament, first crit on Dash; Immediately discard secondary weapon, ouch.

Have had this happen to me. Have also had it happen while Soontir had got himself in the doughnut hole and had not turtled up (because he could not be shot) and then died once Dash could shoot him at range 1 with his primary

I wish I got lucky sometimes.

The luck comes into play when you get that 2 SD roll when you really need a nice mean result. Like having Tycho one shotted at R3 through a rock. (Bad) Or dealing the only crit in the damage deck that will save you for one more round to finish off your opponent. (Good)

Last tournament, I get Wedge in position behind an unshielded B-wing, at range 1, with a Target Lock and Focus. Initial roll is four blanks.

S'okay, I thought, this is why we take Target Locks. Reroll!

Into four blanks.

Wedge was immediately sacked as Rogue Leader.

I have blanked a 7 evade roll with soontir and was one shot.

7. Blanks.

two tuesdays ago:

Redline's autothrusters triggered 4 times in one match

literally didn't do ****

so many spiteful green eyeballs, staring back at me...

then there was the range 3 obstructed tie shot with no evades that scrapped Zeta Ace. 3 blanks, 2 eyes. Sensing a pattern here

even the reds were full of **** that day. The ties simply refused to roll more than 2 damage, and while the enemy swept over three asteroids without any damage, I took it to the face on the first and only time I had to make it through.

back on the app now.

I know you've heard this one before, but this one time, the green dice totally ****ed me....

Oh, wait, there was that other time as well...

I bought a starter set at launch back in 2013, as well as a Y-wing.

On day 1 of receiving the Y-Wing, I knocked it off the table and the peg snapped off while still in the model.

Then I dropped one of the core set Tie Fighters and the wing broke off.

My own fault/clumsiness of course, but it put me off the game for over two years :(

QS

My very first game ever of X-Wing, I knocked over my (full, aluminum) water bottle onto the battle mat. Striking my opponent's X-Wing. Breaking it.

I looked at the carnage, mouth agape for a few moments. Picked up my *brand new* x-wing ship, removed it from the base, and handed it to my opponent, saying only "Here."

(I was able to repair his later and use it, but it's still slightly crooked on the stand...; )

In a three way match against Scum and Rebels one of my two remaining Tie Fighters ended at range 1 in front of an action less Talonbane Cobra. Okay, I figure, I've got focus and he's got no way of modifying his attack, I'll probably take two hits from this but I've got pretty good chances of the Tie surviving, not great chances but still.

Scum player rolled 5 crits.

Yeah those dice are a tricky mistress. I also forgot that while defending after that 4 Blank 1 Hit attack I did roll 4 Evades, hah. And my other friend trying to TLT my Oicunn (he had two Y Wings with it) completely wiffed all four attempts at hitting me the first round of shooting. But hey, atleast another player and I are bringing Phantoms back to our store meta! Woop!

In one match my opponent rolled hit+crit against my interceptor at range 3 and an evade token. I rolled 4 eyeballs, and then 3 turns later the exact same thing happened again.

Another fun moment was when I took an unmodified shot with a phantom at a TIE (that had just k-turned) at range 2 through an asteroid and got 4 natural hits and crits only to see my opponent get 4 natural evades.

I've one-shotted a full health and cloaked (but no focus/evade token) Whisper with a bandit from range 2. Its attack was boosted by Jan Ors and a well-timed double damage crit.

Was playing a caual game with a buddy last week. He just got the raider and I wanted to play with the Advanced titles. Was running 2 advanced and Rhymer. Buddy was fielding 3 X-wing and a Z-95. Turn 2 shooting, he rolled all hits with everything, 11 hits. My 2 advanced roll ALL BLANKS! 12 blanks in a row for my 2 advanced. Not even 1 focus. Even my buddy had a WTF just happened moment.

Rhymer was able to get a good acounting for himself after, one shotted the Z-95 with an AHM and killed an X-wing, but 2 advanced should not go down that easily.

In a friendly match a couple of weeks ago, my Carnor Jax + Autothrusters had an evade token at Range 3 from a pair of Academy Pilots. The first one rolled hit/crit and I rolled one focus and three blanks. No problem: Autothrusters created one evade and my token took care of the other.

Then the second TIE fighter attacked, and also rolled hit/crit. And I rolled an eyeball and three blanks again. Autothrusters canceled the hit, leaving me with a crit. The damage card was Major Explosion, and after rolling a hit on the die, I pulled a Direct Hit.

My friend loves to run Corran horn, and I love to run Tie Advanceds... my favorite pilot to VS his Horn is Mr. Maarek Stele. Because i always outfit him with AHM. and with out fail 12/12 of the three crits i pull one is always..... always a direct hit. leading to a dead horn.

Before the new damage deck came out, I played a game where it came down to the other guy's Emon vs. my Kavil, both with 8hp remaining. I manage to use the boost from engine upgrade to repeatedly stay out of his fire arcs while firing away with the four dice blaster turret (using PtL to get the focus to trigger it), and steadily whittle down his shields. Several turns later, I end up at range 1 (but still out of arc) when he slow plays to try to make me overshoot.... and that was when he used Saboteur and Kavil got the Munitions Failure crit...
