Theory Wing: The Missile Boat

By Stinger07, in X-Wing

It's the successor to the gunboat isn't it?

It'd be odd if they released it before releasing its predecessor.

Z-95 says hi.

And is the Z-95 more popular than the X-Wing?

For list building? Hell yeah it is.

I'm not talking about this insignificant game. I'm talking about Star Wars.

I really hope we get both the missile boat and gunboat, Fractal Sponge's renders look so good. I would love to have something small base Imperial that isn't tie this or tie that.

Known Imperial non-TIE starfighters that totally need to be in this game! (In Imperial gray):

V-wing (Alpha-3)

Eta-2

ARC-170

(Other left over Clone Wars ships are possible but these are the ones I've seen as definately Imperial in the EU)

Gunboat and Missile Boat of course

A-9 vigilance and I-7 Howlrunner

Scimitar assault bomber (it's not a TIE, though it sure looks like one)

There's probably others, but you get the gist of it. The Empire starfighter corp was more than just a Sienar fan club.

The prequel stuff isn't going to happen (thank god), but the Gunboat and Missile Boat have to happen sometime. Why introduce SLAM if you aren't going to introduce the fighter it was invented for?

Its fan made but this Eta-3 would be awesome (not mine).

I'd fly that. If it wasn't an Eta. Which means it's probably not nearly as cool as it looks.

You say in the old EU, right? Because there is no Z-95 in the Original Trilogy and it only looks familiar to the Average Joe because it is almost identical to a X-Wing with the closed s-foils.

X-Wing and TIE Fighter are Star Wars.

And about the GUN vs MIS, there is a threadnought out there proving the GUN is much more popular.

FFG will release next the TIE Special Forces and whatever toy ship of the new movie, but Assault Gunboat deserved a spot in the game.

Unfortunately, every new ship released makes the GUN farther from reality, as people and FFG care more about meta (and meta changing) then about Star Wars and cool ship miniatures.

PS: For the record, I actually wished FFG released the MIS instead of the TIE Punisher. But I still think the GUN should come first.

First of all, don't confuse number of posts with number of people that support a thing. That thread is mostly the same 10 people talking and posting Gunboat pictures to each other.

Secondly, that is all.

The forum software defaults to autofollowing threads in which you've made a post.

The gunboat thread currently has 93 followers. Even if half those are people who actually use the thread-follow system intentionally for some bizarre reason (unlikely!), that's still ~47 people, not ten, so your math is WAY off.

I do agree that the thread doesn't prove gunboat/missileboat popularity one way or the other.

(also, re your earlier post: researched conclusion =/= opinion, hope that helps you in the future!)

Um, what I said was the Headhunter was more popular than the X-wing in the star wars Galaxy. Of course the X-wing is the most popular fighter in the Star Wars franchise...we play a game called X-wing! Come on!

True, but it also assumes that everyone that posts in the thread is in support of the Gunboat. Which is not the case.

Even swapping the idea of ~47 people using the follow system for "47 people who dislike it" (and I can tell you the numbers are nowhere near that), your math is still utterly useless.

You COULD tell me that, but I wouldn't believe you because you're one of those ten people and SUPER biased on the issue.

Well can I count for like 20 pro-gunboat people?

GUNBOAT!

MISSILE BOAT!

YAY!

GUNBOAT!

MISSILE BOAT!

YAY!

All I see is you yelling TIE AVENGER!

you're one of those ten people and SUPER biased on the issue.

not really

liking the gunboat a bit because it's NOT another TIE with different panels isn't really bias when there are TIEs that I like more than the Gunboat (they're just already in the game so discussing what they should be in the game is pointless).

unlike your frankly unhealthy semi-erotic obsession with the Defender~!

Semi nothing!

Q.E.D?

The game has been expanded with a wave of 2-6 ships around twice per year.

The most iconic ships have been dealt with already, and now come ships from the new movies or series. Still, there aren't so many of them, and the game still "needs" two waves per year as it serves both to keep it fresh, and to keep it balanced with "fixes" to older ships.

I don't think FFG is going to close down this game tomorrow, really. So even if the GUN, the MIS or the TIE "Avenger" don't come out for wave 10, I see no reason why they couldn't come out later when there is a drought of movies or series providing new ships.

I understand that the devs give priority to ships that have either more distinct mechanics for the game (like the TIE Phantom, that appeared in a single not so popular game in the 90's), or are in the spotlight of the new audiences because they are featured in current movies or series (like the Inquisitor's TIE, that I see really not having much new to bring to the game compared to the TIE/FO or the A-Wing, but kids todays will recognize it easily).

The GUN is an imperial B-Wing/X-Wing hybrid. The MIS is an A-Wing/TIE Punisher hybrid, and the TIE/ad "Avenger" sits directly between the TIE Advanced x1 and the TIE Defender, in the lore. These three ships lack both topicality and unique mechanics (specially now that the K-Wing "stole" the SLAM from the MIS). So of course they are low low priority for the devs.

Once the most current ships leave the spotlight, FFG will still have to come with 2 waves of ships a year. There will be the chance for the GUN, MIS and TIE/ad to be added to the game.

I for one am looking forward to the gunboat, but see no point in posting in that thread about it

Even so, we don't know how widely spread the Z-95 is in the new canon. It could be just an ancient, rare design.

Agreed. The GUN, MIS and Avenger have against them the fact they lack unique mechanics. (not that I care for unique mechanics, I just want my beautiful imperial ships)

Well, at least the MIS would bring SLAM to the Imperials...

PS: and let's not forget the TIE Hunters. They are deadly.

Honestly, the Assault Gunboat is just an imperial Y-Wing with a cannon instead of a turret and missiles instead of Torpedos, and maybe a system instead of an astromech. The Avenger is a 3-attack advanced. Heck, they call it the advanced over and over again. If they were ever to make an Avenger, I would just give it advancecd cards and an Avenger Title, adding one attack die.

The Missile Boat on the other hand is a SLAMmer that has good shields and a weak hull with lots of missiles and maybe torpedoes. It only has one laser cannon, which is not common in this game. I think it is the most unique of the flyable craft in TIE Fighter, and I think it has real potential for X-Wing.

If one thing I like from FFG is that they always have managed to give all ships some twist to make them special. Even when the GUN, MIS and TIE/ad are quite much an interpolation of other ships in the lore, I am certain that they will give them enough tricks in the form of unique upgrades, dial, actions, pilot abilities, etc to put them apart from the rest of the X-Wing ship roster.
