The $1000+ club... Have you spent more than you thought on X-Wing?

By DanDoulogos, in X-Wing

Retail, I would have made the 1K Club.... but I get most of my gear through Amazon saving 15-50% on each expansion. Right now I'm at around $600 plus $120 in storage solutions, sleeves, etc.

The less I think about it, the better off I am

I think my signature speaks for what I have spent......and I know what I spent. If you are surprised by how much you've spent on a game then there is the actual problem.

That's why it's best to keep tabs on what you spend. I've got 32 ships in my collection, but here in New Zealand, the small ships go for about NZ$25 each and the large ships NZ$50, so it doesn't take long to add up. I'm not in the $1,000 club yet... but I'm only $75 out so far. And that's including everything I've bought specifically for X-wing.

My last tally was around $750. This new wave hasn't really won me over (I've only bought a single K-wing for the Conner Net). I'll get a YV at the next store tournament to round things out.

But boy when Dengar and Zukuss come out I'll be digging deep again.

I haven't done the math yet, but I'm confident that I fall squarely into the "I think I need to spend even more $$$ on this game" club. :D

I've easily spent ~$1,600 MSRP, but most likely closer to $1,000 hard cash (because of discounts and MtG trade ins)...

I'm not addicted.

I swear.

I've only invested € 160 so far (=300 retail), by buying off a collection, but I've calculated that the total retail value of my desired collection would become around € 800-900. That's because I want to be able to field a 600-800 vs 600-800 point epic battle (with ships from the original simulators) with full-squads, without calculating upgrades.

My goal would be:

Rebel: 4 X-w, 3 Y-w, 3 B-w, 3 A-w, 6 Z-95, 1 YT-2400, 1 YT-2400, 1 CR90, 1 GR75 + extra's

Imperial: 8 T-Fighter, 6 Tie-Interceptor, 3 Tie Bomber, 3 Tie Advanced, 2 Tie Defender, 1 Lambda, 1 Firespray, 1 Raider, 1 Gozanti + extra's

$1000 AU, approx yes, though retail that would be closer to $1000 US mark as I've gotten some online and ebay deals etc.

I'm about two months in and I'm hitting my $500 mark. I guess as long as rent is paid I don't feel bad in the slightest.

As the Meta evolves you're desired collection will morph and your wallet will shrink.

I don't care much about the meta, I won't play tourneys, but casual with friends & kids, where I probably provide the ships.

So my desired collection it mostly based on being able to field a squad set-up of 1 elite pilot + 2 wingmen (so 3 ships of each type) in big epic games

I really only care about ships I've seen on screen (OT), or which I flew in the X-Wing/Tie Fighter/X-Wing Alliance games and most of those ships are already in the game (except the gunboat and some (assault) transports). Raider is probably an exception as it looks cool and distinct Star Wars. can't say the same about most scum-ships I don't even recognize.

But X-Wing miniatures will be a staple on my X-mas/birthday wishlists for years to come, so I expect I won't need to buy all the ships myself ;)

And I still have an MTG-collection to sell, so I don't expect to bleed dry on this game ;)

I was reading another thread and someone mentioned that they didn't want to actually calculate how much they have spent on X-Wing for fear that the number would be much higher than they wanted to believe.

Well, I did the math and found that I had spent over a thousand bucks on this particular hobby - in ships alone (not counting tournaments, storage solutions, playing surfaces, and other accessories...

I thought the total might be close to a grand, but I didn't think it'd be over....

So I wonder how many players (like me) have done the math and realized that they have also (unwittingly) crossed some kind of hobby spending threshold..

Now, I know some of you have spouses who have no idea how much your hobby has pinched from your family budgets, so don't feel obligated to come clean - it is enough to say that you've actually done the math, and have an pretty accurate idea of how much you've spent.

I just started to add it up via Chaos Cards web store (which is discounted compared to some of the prices I paid). I got to halfway through page 2 and gave up at just under £500. That didn't include all the stuff on the other 3 pages or the out of stock items thus far. I'm guestimating it to be in the £1200-£1500 region including storage but not counting tourney costs, local game club costs etc.

That sounds like a lot of money but when I think about how I used to live or how most of the world around me lives; that's probably less than the average person spends in the pub per year. I mean a pint is about £4-5 these days so £20 a night in the pub becomes £120-£140 per week and rolls into £6-7k per year. And I know/used to know a lot of people who do just this! Playing X-wing is cheaper than drinking for fun; which seems to be one of the UK's top passtimes :P

It's only a problem when you look at your collection and think of the retail value, but if you compare it to the amount of fun you had, it's quite a bargain.

What would you do if not playing X-wing to pass the time, have some fun etc?

You'd probably go to a cinema, pub, theme-park etc more often and spend your money there, or you would spend your money on other stuff (food).

Anyway, you'd likely be spending your money on something else that is not lasting.

With x-wing you'll have memories and an empty wallet, but still have a (sellable) collection of models to show for it, but with many other activities you only have the memories and an empty wallet.

Can't imagine going to the pub every day tho :P

also, you have your collection for a loooong time (at least I intend to).

I can just stop xwing now (not that I will), and get exited about it in 10 or 20 years again.

anyone who played, say "hero quest", the same time I did and wants to buy a mini now.. yeah, you know the prices. and they hurt. hard.

so I just give in to my addiction right now and will be happy again in 20+ years, as I'm not missing 1 single ship (even that ugly ewing ^^). ;)

This.

I'm seeing this game as a long time investment. Models are very good looking, the game is enjoyable and I see myself playing this game with my children and later grandchildren.

I just wish I had the money available right now to invest more, but patience is a virtue and I don't expect this game to vanish just yet

I agree with two variously stated notions, the first being that the expense of any fleet ought to be weighed against the expenses of various other entertainments which could/would have otherwise been spent. Paintball, Go-cart racing, etc - even video games. It can be shocking to realize that a hobby has cost as much as it has - but that same hobby isn't all that much more expensive than other hobbies we might not even bother counting the cost of.

The other notion is that once the investment is made, it can be enjoyed for a long while, which puts the original investment in an amortized light. A thousand dollars over 20 years, isn't much.

FWIW, and I don't wish to turn this into a GW Bash fest... But given what I've spent so far on X-Wing, which includes every wave to date...

That's about what it would cost me to rebuild my 1750 point Space Marine army.

I'm on just under £600, which works out as about $900. If I had any S&V then I'd easily be above $1,000 but I have no desire to own any of them, so just Rebels and Imperials for me.

1k? Hell, probably closer to two at this point. Over two hundred in non FFG product accessories.

I can't be bothered working it out exactly but an off the top of my head calculation says I've got between 90 and 100 ships including one of every Epic size so that's well over a £1000 ($1534).

That's not to mention that I previously had 4 of every ship up to and including Wave 4 before I decided to sell it all off at super cheap prices in a moment of madness. I'd say I'm quite comfortably in the $2000 Club.

Definitely there. Thought about this the other day.

Oh goddammit...

Based on today's prices on MM, including pre-orders, I'm a little under $1400.

Now I started in at the beginning and I have more of the early waves (100 points of (almost) everything) than the latter (baseline two of each small/aces, one of each large, two of each small epic and one of each large, flavored to taste), but still, don't tell my wife, ok?

I'd be thrilled if I was only a member of this club once.
