The $1000+ club... Have you spent more than you thought on X-Wing?

By DanDoulogos, in X-Wing

I was reading another thread and someone mentioned that they didn't want to actually calculate how much they have spent on X-Wing for fear that the number would be much higher than they wanted to believe.

Well, I did the math and found that I had spent over a thousand bucks on this particular hobby - in ships alone (not counting tournaments, storage solutions, playing surfaces, and other accessories...

I thought the total might be close to a grand, but I didn't think it'd be over....

So I wonder how many players (like me) have done the math and realized that they have also (unwittingly) crossed some kind of hobby spending threshold..

Now, I know some of you have spouses who have no idea how much your hobby has pinched from your family budgets, so don't feel obligated to come clean - it is enough to say that you've actually done the math, and have an pretty accurate idea of how much you've spent.

Easily.

I have knowingly spent over a grand on ships since the game came out.

Best money I ever spent, really.

Now the problem is carrying and using it all!

Yep. Money well spent.

Almost certainly.

When i started playing my intention was just to get four A wings as they were one of the two fave ships i love (the other being tie ints).

I then realised i really needed a core set so got one, then another for the dice.

Then i was halfway towards having a decent imperial force and decided to get one so mates could play me at home.

Now i think i've bought every released expansion, most of them several times.

Add to the fact that xwing in the UK costs about 40 per cent more than it does in the states.. well i've probably spent over 1000GBP let alone dollars

We can stop at anytime though, we're not addicted, honest....

at rough count i've spent around £1300

Thats estimating at a very conservative £10 for small ships (actually more like £12 uk), £15 for punishers/starvipers/kwings (more like £17 in uk) and £25 for large base ships, £50 for transports and £70 for tantives and raiders

I've lowered the 'average' price as a few ships ive got at store discount, free or cheaper off mates but on the whole i've bought about 90 per cent of my collection retail.

I also wanted to just play a few ships, and keep it light - but ended up slowly amassing a one of everything, and two or more of some things, sort of fleet over time.... Never really tolling up the damage. I can't say that I have buyers remorse, I don't - but I do have a sort of shock at how much I have indulged myself (financially) in this game - it was a little shocking to do the math. I knew I was in the ball park, and hadn't really known I was actually beyond it...

Still no regrets...or if I do have regrets, it is only that I didn't buy things on sale...

As a newb just getting ino the system I've spent around $750. However, my collection is worth much more than that because I found some great deals on Ebay. I must admit that I thought I would not spend much beyond the basic set but this system is like crack and hard to stop. :D

...Yeeeaaaahhh....I don't let anyone try to add up the amounts anymore. And I punch myself for even thinking about doing it

I'm at about 650 USD, but I only collect scum and rebels otherwise I'd probably be there.....also no reason for anyone to feel guilty about going over a grand with their collections.....if your feeling guilty or your significant other gets mad at your spending, remember that everyone has their guilty pleasures, video game players, gearheads, pc moders, painters, whatever the hobby all spend tons of money on their specific hobby. (Although I'm sure many of us have some of these hobbies to go along with xwing!) Hobbies are good and as long as your spending isn't interfering with you or your families basic life necessities like paying bills I say keep spending and keep on playing x wing.

Thing is i play about twice a week. Ive been playing for two years (there abouts)

It works out at about £10 a week. I'd happily spend £50 a week/weekend in pubs and clubs and not even consider the waste of 'renting' beer. At least with xwing i get to keep the models and they have a pretty good resale value if i had to stop playing 'this minute' and given they are 'star wars' merchandise i can only see their resale value being good in a decade if the game folded.

Rough estimate is about $1,300 retail. So probably around a thousand since a lot were winnings and/or discounts.

TANGENTIALLY: 1 Stormtrooper Suit, ABS.

Easily over $1000, don't even think twice about it. I hope someday to still be playing this like I still do MTG 20 years later, with no end in sight!

Exactly, i spent about £400 in one go on a new console and three games for it a while back.

You don't want to know how much airsoft cost me before i started working in the industry. A decent airsoft gun can cost £300 to £500 and thats after you've bought the outdoors kit to go with it, paid green fees, bought ammunition.

All hobbies are a luxury, the trick is not to spend money you cant afford on them.

Oh god, you've just reminded me of how much my film quality tie fighter pilot costume cost me to put togehter... i'd forgotten about that mad surge of expense last year!

In the UK you can get ready made decent quality TK/Stormtrooper sets pre made with blaster for about GBP £1000 , seriously tempted for next year.

Probably not over $1000. A few hundred to be sure.

Its helped that I've been really good with snagging things on sale. $30 for my Raider, 50% of on a LOT of my stuff (including two IGs and a Decimator).

I like to pretend that I pay for my FFG plastic crack addiction by selling old, unused GW stuff on ebay, but I can only delude myself so far. Sure, I've raised some funds. I've spent them as well.

I bought a 1/450 scale Nebulon B from Mel, for crying out loud.

If y'all are feeling the sticker shock, don't kick yourself over it. Think about how much most people spend entertaining themselves over the course of a couple years. It's a lot. That's all money frivolously spent (I mean that quite literally), on ski lift tickets, jet-ski rentals, model trains (dude, THERE is a money sink!), alcohol, and nosebleed seats to see a band that has sucked since 1987. A lot of gamers feel a little embarrassed to spend "grown-up" money on "childish" pursuits, but think about how many hours of fun you get out of a $50 role-playing book, a $60 video game, or a fleet of kickass starfighters (I dunno what the average is for a decent fleet, as I don't actually play X-Wing, but more power to y'all!).

Brother, remind me to show you a pic of my wife in her witch hunter gear. If you're on the warhammer 40k facebook group, it's the one posted there like 2-3 days ago.

My next project is Shadow Scout / Storm commando.

It's my favorite game, board games and video games all included, so it was all done knowingly so NO REGRETS whatsoever.

Easily over $1000, don't even think twice about it. I hope someday to still be playing this like I still do MTG 20 years later, with no end in sight!

I look at things like my Historical Miniature Wargaming and XWing as long term investments, still playing decades down the road! Its one reason that I prefer lead minis over plastic, they are more durable and will last through the decades! We'll see how XWing lasts in comparison.

THIS! ^^^^^

My X-wing stuff to my children, my stormtrooper armour to my boy.

All of it will serve further down the line.

Wow. And yikes. I'd never done the math. Thankfully, some ships were gifts, and others were bought from someone getting out of the game (at a significant discount). My MSRP is $1350 for ships alone.

According to the spreadsheet, well over $1000 MSRP. However, most of that spending was made possible by liquidating no-longer-wanted gaming and hobby assets: Miniatures from the randomized D&D Miniatures game, old Magic cards, and vintage Star Wars figures on the card (I am no longer interested in "investing" in Star Wars, just in playing!).

My wife is happy that I got rid of stuff I wasn't using; the family benefits because I gave some of the proceeds to our general fund, and I am thrilled to have a satisfactory collection of cool plastic spaceships.
