FFG's Flight Crew: Let's build the Armada community

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

If you do something you love, you will never work a day in your life.

I beg to differ. I love my career. It gives me a great sense of purpose to do what I do. There are times that I feel on top of the world doing what I do, but there are aspects to it that are less fun than others. Those aspects are work. I'd hazard to say that every great job will have that.

This is completely speculation on my part.

The way this is written, I think it will most likely work like this:

-You have an area you are expected to cover. Possibly negotiable.

-There are multiple people doing this job in your area, ideally.

-FFG solicits official demos to stores.

-Stores request official demos.

-FFG then notifies Flight Crew associates in the area of that store of the requested demo OR, they offer the demo to those people one at a time based on criteria set by both you and FFG. Either way, this happens until they choose a demonstrator to run the demo.

-You then go and run the demo if you were selected/volunteered.

My friend works for a company that coordinates field contractors for IT projects. Basically let's say Wal-Mart wants to update all their computers to Windows 10. They hire my friend's company. My friend then manages the jobs Wal-Mart provides and matches them up with contractors in his network. So lots of moving parts. He sometimes sends out mass emails saying the first to respond gets the job, etc (only if it is urgent). In a way, the people of his network are competing against each other. He then has to keep notes on various contractors to make sure he is selecting the right one for the job.

It will likely be the same thing here. You will become part of FFG's network of demonstrators and will be offered jobs as they come and if they fit your "profile."

I expect it to be part time work and expect to be able to do it while maintaining my full time job. I was upfront about this in my application. So I guess if I am wrong, that rules me out. Unfortunate, but I don't think they will pay better than what I'm currently making.

Being retired I could be all over this!! If they paid my gas & lodging/food.lol or better yet get free expansion packs!! However it sounds like you don't get to pick what you demo??

For those who have applied, did you get any sort of confirmation email or acknowledgement page? After I clicked "submit" all I saw was a blank grey rectangle and I'm getting paranoid that something went wrong.

I applied. I have been a pressganger for Privateer Press for 3+ years and I was a Bleeding Edge Knight for Ex Illis. I run all my stores events anyway and give demos to people who ask, it is how all my friends got into it.

I would assume they are getting flooded with applications. I know when I signed up for the Pressgang it took weeks and included calling my store to ask about me to make sure I am a good fit for the program. While I do not know if FFG will go to the same lengths of "quality control" I would assume that it will take sometime.

I gave the 2 stores I ran Massing of Sullust for, as well as Mikael Hasselstein, which will likely bite me in the bum. >.>

One day I will own a medal. . . One day. . . Most likely when wave 2 comes out officially

I don't believe I received any feedback or confirmation email other than the webpage saying "Thanks for applying" (or something to that affect).

I got the grey page, then after a moment or two it populated the "thanks for applying" message.

I too applied and shall wait patiently for the next phase, if I am so fortunate.

Would be neat to know how many applications were received within the first 48 hours...

Yeah, definitely. It'd be even more interesting to me to know how many *good* applications they end up getting. There's got to be way more people who think, "Gee, I'd love to get paid to play games!" than ones who are actually qualified for the job.

I always hate open ended questions, and writing that up to 500 words answer gave me little fits. I'm sure there is an interview process after the application, but I tried to cover as many bases as I could!

That's more or less exactly how it'll work. Definitely not a replacement for a regular job, just some extra money on the side doing something you are passionate about.

And to whoever asked about how many applications have come in... it's a lot.

I prolly whiffed this. I talked more about my experience running local and national level events for other game companies than i did about having patience and giving demos and how i wont table flip during a demo..... well see

How do you know this?

Thanks for the response!

I'm guessing it's a job and a half to weed through those and determine which are viable for the next step.

Hoping I make the cut! Waiting extremely (im)patiently.

Well if they got your application you should have gotten an email today.

Maybe FFG should due more like news or have admin on this forum. Or post on their FB but instead we get silence or so it seems

I recirved an email from FFG today. The number of responses was so great, prescreening in advance is unlikely. FFG will coordinate with local applicates based on requests made for demos as they come in. This is pretty cool!

What on earth are you talking about? Despite this being posted in the Armada forum instead of asked to Customer Service or any other communication channel, the questions were answered, and anyone that applied got an email with more info today...

The Email in question. If you have not received this and have applied it is unfortunate but likely that your application got lost in their overwhelming amount.

With last week being our 2015 World Championships, I’ve been a little busy, but I wanted to take a second to let you all know what the next step is for the Flight Crew.

Essentially, with the sheer volume of responses to the call for members, there’s simply no way I’m going to be able to go through and vet everyone in advance. My plan is to reach out to applicants in the relevant area each time I have an event, figure out who is available and interested, and THEN take a closer look at their application, references, and such. Once you’ve worked an event for us, you’ll be added to my list of “known” members! There will be a structure to denote level of experience among members, as well as “Captains” in some geographical areas that will get to help out in some special ways at events like conventions.

What this means for you is just sit tight for now. I’m working on the list of events we want a presence at in 2016. I’ll also be at BGG.Con working at our booth later this month, so feel free to stop in and say hello! I know I met a bunch of you at Worlds this last week, and it’s great to put a name with a face.

Thank you all again for applying, I hope to work with you soon.
