The new plastic dials look really cool, but...

By XiliX, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I just did a quick calculation of how many packs I'd have to buy just for my current collection. I'd have to buy 23 packs of dials. At a suggested retail of $10 that's $230 just for sort of cooler dials. It is nice to be able to see all the moves at once without having to have little cheat sheets, but $230 is pretty steep.

FFG does a great job of turning out nice accessories. I pretty much buy all of the Star Wars miniature game expansion I can. I'm trying to keep up with X-Wing, Armada and Imperial Assault. This is just one item I think I'll have to pass on.

I posted this just to get a feeler for the rest of the communities thoughts.

Thanks,

XiliX

Why would you want or need a dial for every ship? Do you often have 70ish ships on the table?

That's true, They do look nice and I do love accessories.

You really only need 8 dials for each faction, and that's only if you plan on running Tie/Z-95 swarms. They are made so that you can change them in between games to whatever ships you are planning on using. :)

The thing is... how easy will be to change dials? If it's quick, easy, and doesn't run the risk of damage then they might be worth it.

But it they're a pain to switch out then no I wouldn't bother with them.

Based on what? These look to be exactly like the Armada speed dials, just a little bigger, and while it would be easier to be constantly taking these ar=part and putting them back together than the regular X-Wing dials, its still something that your not going to want to do all the time and will still cause significantly extra wear and tear on the dials.

By my calculations you would want 20 of these for each faction you play to have enough for any reasonable squad.

It will be a PITA to keep having to switch dials out back and forth.

I'll be passing on these.

I don't know. I'd think you need as many of them as you'd typically fly of each ship, which (with rare exceptions) is going to be 0-2. And of course the regular dials aren't being ruled out, so there's nothing that says you can't field 7 TIE fighters with one special dial (for Howlrunner, naturally) and six regular dials.

I don't think I'll be spending my own money on any of them, but I might pick some up with store credit or something.

Swapping the discs out would be a royal pain. Even if it is possible (likely) and won't cause additional wear and tear on the cardboard (unlikely), the game gas enough fiddly bits that need dealt with to get set up for a game, prying apart the plastic dials, searching for the other one you want and putting them back together (for 3-4 ships) is going to be a bigger hassle than most will be willing to do.

Still looking forward to these making custom dials easier to make though.

Yeah swapping the cardboard out is asking for trouble sooner or later you'll get damage.

Two per ship sounds reasonable but that's still alot of covers.

Personally I'll stick with cardboard dials and spend money on ships instead.

I intend to only start with my scum, and really only the ones I take to tournaments, so 2 packs will hold me over. From there I will pick one or two packs up here and there as time and money permits. I really like these dials over the standard ones but I would never try and change out my entire collection in one hit, my wife would murder me....

Ill get them for the stuff I always use.... maybe 2 or 3 packs per fraction to start with

We have to give a nod to FFG though. I see complaints about dials wearing down .. FFG have acknowledged this and have provided a relatively inexpensive solution for us.

Whether you use them to replace all of your dials (double the storage space) or just a few is up to us ... but the solution is there!

I will buy 2 packs for both rebs and imps. I plan to insert coloured slips into the ship guide and match with coloured tabs (painted number markers) on the ships themselves. I play with a lot of new fellas so it will be infinitely better than marking my dials.

Regardless of use .. It's a wonderful solution by FFG.

I'm passing on these. I've already protected my dials with nylon washers as spacers and a good coat of the varnish I use on my miniatures.

Wish scum were the funky burnt rust color and rebels were of green. I plan on getting them for the main ships I like to fly.. Y-wings. And all ties!!

What is that varnish and how do you apply it? I've been thinking of putting some protection on my stuff before they get too bad but haven't really put any brain power to it. I've applied paint pens to the sides of almost all of my tokens and templates but paint isn't really an adhesive and only a weak surface protectant.

As for the OP, they do look great and I will likely get some for my favorite ships. Cudos to FFG again for making something that looks awesome and seems affordable. However, I'm not going to replace the entire inventory . . . yet haha. They would make great stocking stuffers or a simple birthday gift for that X-wing fan in your life.

Aren't there 3 dials in each pack?

They seem like a good product. I won't be getting them for all of mine, but maybe a few packs for the aces.

I wonder if they could be used in conjunction with these to make the ultimate dial!*:

*Still won't make you fly any better :(

Yes. 3 per $10 pack.

That's not too bad. Unless you're flying swarms, you won't need more than two sets per faction and unless FFG pulls a GW, the inserts should be interchangeable between factions. You might be able to get away with less than 8 sets. (3 Imps, 3 Rebs, 2 Scum).

If you just fly a single list all the time, yeah. But if you are regularly flying different ships the, like I said up thread

Therefore, your going to probably want in the neighborhood of 20 dials for each faction.
