What lessons have you learned?

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

If your clever strategy involves going speed zero at any point, it's probably not that clever.

I have to take issue with this.

A well-timed speed zero can swing an engagement pretty heavily.

The oldest ruse in the book: Tell your enemy where you're going to be, then don't be there.

Making sure to leave lots of time for very special orders? Lol

Seriously though. Make sure to remember why you are playing. The scenario.(very important)

Don't underestimate anything the opponent can bring. You never know when it will jump out and get ya.

Don't underestimate anything the opponent can bring. You never know when it will jump out and get ya.

While you're absolutely correct, this one has some complexity that's not immediately apparent. You have to learn to accurately assess everything your opponent can bring, because (as I have to remind my boss basically daily), if everything is the most important thing, then nothing is.

Prioritization is an important skill.

I shall not Split my Fleet on Deployment.

I shall not offer Salvation as a Sacrifice gambit.

I shall not protect my Assault Frigate by leaving it out of Battle.

I shall not space out my Fighters and leave gaps for Corvettes to drive through unmolested.

I shall not deliver my Bombers piecemeal so smaller groups of enemy fighters can Tie them up most efficiently.

I shall not split my Fire to damage but not kill anything.

I shall not have dice running so cold...

Oh man... I'm down with Salvation being a diversion. Well, more like a trap, but it's worth it.

But those dice... They can be the real criminal.

What I've learned.

1. Practice Flying your ships!

2. The Bigger the ship, the easier it is to hit.

3. Speed is great until you fly off the battlefield while at speed 4. So see lesson # 1!!

4. (I know it's been said on this thread before, But...) Concentrate your firepower on what you want to kill!

5. Range Control. Learn it, live it, love it! It always sucks when you could get more die in your roll, if only your ship were closer. And this idea goes both ways.

As a corollary to the speed 0 thing;

I've learned to NOT reduce a ship's speed to 0, unless (and this is not the only condition, by the way), you have the means to increase it back up from 0 on your very next activation. (ie, your next Dial is Nav or you have a nav token).

That was just it... Line up that Front arc Shot... Advancing CR90 that has shields on its sides but 1 shield on the front and 1 damage card from Luke...

Concentrate Fire on Salvation with XI-7s...

ACC - BLANK - BLANK - BLANK.

... dammit.

Always Raymus

Always Raymus

If Raymus Antilles could be cloned and set to command every Rebel ship, the Galactic Empire would crumble in days. Dude is really good. It seems like the question isn't whether to include Raymus or not but on which ship, exactly.

Always Raymus

Raymus was on Yavaris... Two turns later, he let me do the Double Tap...

Y-Wing One: Blank - Blank

Y-Wing Two: Blank - Blank

Keyan: Blank Blank, Blank-Hit

... yeaaaaah. was not a Good dice day. Especially since my opponent was averageing 1 damage with Counter-2 and 2 damage from 3B AS from his A-Wings...

Don't trust what anyone says on forums.

Yavaris with Raymus may be good, but not alone and with minimal fighter support.

Ackbar Broadsides are Fun.

Gunnery teams aren't effective if you only have one applicable target.

Everything can die in one round with enough firepower on it, this especially includes your Objectived flagship.

Why?

First thing that comes to my mind would be all those useless squadrons with nothing to do. Did you or do you believe that Squadrons are useless?

No.

I just had a moment of realization.

I once slowed to speed 0 instead of ramming. I wanted to be able to fire one more round next turn. With only 1HP left and initiative, why waste a black range shot?

I knew I was a dead man walking, may as well make it count.

Follow my own rules about not letting the enemy choose the engagement.

Your first mistake was to trust what I said enough to ask.

I've done this. I knew my opponent would still be in the front arc of my VSD1 next turn if I stopped, and if I moved speed 1 he would have shot over the top of me. I issued a nav token with tarkin, and stopped the ship. As I had initiative, I ripped the ship apart with a full 6-dice volley, and did't even die to the return fire of his buddies. Got messed up though, but shields recharge well with Tarkin.

But the forums have said that squadrons are useless, and that squadrons are not useless. I can neither trust nor distrust both at once. WHAT DO I DO?!

But yeah, there is a load of old rubbish on here at times, like any other forum. Good stuff too though.

What to do?

Play more, hang of forums less! :P

Its like if you were nearsighted - but you grow older and you get farsighted ... there is a perfect spot in the middle somewhere. And so are squadrons.
