Fleets of the Outer Rim (Italianjob85’s Shipyard)

By Italianjob85, in Star Wars: Armada

Greetings from the Outer Rim

Like a few of you folks I've been a painter of a few other miniatures based game, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, and even costumes. My passion for Star Wars has always been at the top so when X-wing was released I quickly picked it up, however I longed for the larger capital ship battles. Then Armada was released and I knew this is the game I wanted to be fully involved in.

Since then I've been focused on adapting the painting station and color patterns away from green ork skin, desert Tau Riptides, and cream and dark green Dark Angels power armor to a more Star Wars friendly scheme. My painting style is based on layers rather than air brushing or using blending. Its a simple way to begin painting but challenging to master (which I am not), but if you have any questions please feel free to ask!

I've seen a lot of beautiful fleets in this forum and it has inspired me to and also has given me ideas, so thank you and keep up the great work.

I wanted to give both my Imperial and Rebel fleets a little back story, so this will be a mix of painting and lore. I hope you enjoy.

Imperial Sector 4 Fleet

Original the 4th Sector Army, working along side Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi and Clone Commander Bacara during the Clone Wars. Now this fleet patrols the mid to outer rim looking out for rebellion. Since the reformation of the Republic into the First Galactic Empire the fleet has been placed under the command of House Praji. While not as large as it once was in Republic times this fleet is still very power and can be used to destroy, punish, and subjugate any rebellious system within this sector.

*Not completely Altered to my liking for the lore*

Imperial Fighters:

All of the fighters are painted, including specialty paint job on the heroes.

The legion of Tie Fighters, following their fearless heroes into any battle no matter the odds.

Thank you for reading, more updates to come as the sector slowly begins to fight the tyranny of the Empire...

Outer Rim Guardians

Even before Order 66 was given, the Rebel Alliance began to form, whispers of a Dark Lord pulling the strings on both Republic and Confederate sides of the Clone Wars. A few senators began to form their own fleets and armies in secrecy. The outer rim was still recovering from the Clone Wars when the new Tyrannical rule of the Empire was instated. These planets were enslaved, slaughtered, and subjugated, but there were a few that decided to fight. They called themselves the Outer Rim Guardians, in the beginning they were small a few small ships with mostly fighter squadrons. But all that would change when they met in secret with the Rebel Alliance. Mon Mothma quickly recruited them and assigned them the task of the Sector 4 Fleet. The battle was about to begin...

20151025_143826.jpg

They were small at first, but with the Rebel Alliance backing them they knew more ships were to come.

The Guardians begin to gather their squadrons in preparation for the larger ships...

nice!

I like how the TIEs all fit together to form a swarm.

Do you have any rebels for them to fight?

Nice, clean work.

Love the simple but distinct striping patterns on the TIEs.

Carrying Case

On a more logistical note, I have been seeing folks curious about how different people transport their fleets. I wanted to post my case that I got off of Amazon. I don't recall the exact price but it is a Feldherr case and it is amazing. It holds two of every wave one ship type and has custom foam for all the little bits too.

IMG_6108.jpg

The one off of Amazon comes with all of these trays included. They also make wave 2 trays to swap out in the future.

Hope this help.

I do! I am just in the process of painting the squadrons. In due time I will be painting the ships as well.

Nice, clean work.

Love the simple but distinct striping patterns on the TIEs.

Thank you! I wanted to give the heroes their own little paint scheme that is still familiar.

I may steal an idea or two from you. My own Imperial ships have a similar theme, with each of my TIEs having a big, broad blue stripe down the wing panel.

I like the cross on Howlrunner and Rhymer's double stripe.

Are you going to paint the Capital ships to match?

EDIT: Also, the Feldherr case looks like almost exactly what I need.

Edited by Tvayumat

Im glad you like the stripes. Both characters need something to distinguish them. Also feel free to use any ideas you see since I myself have borrowed a few.

The current plan is to finished up all the squadrons since the ships are still nice and playable.

Long term plan is to paint sector 4 war patterns on the imperials and probably do a full repaint for some of the rebels.

Awesome work, mate! Nice, crisp, clean, and bloody great to see some more lore-work around here too!

You've got a real talent for it, it's good clean work and some great colour splashes. I like the patterning on the blue X-wing flight, but I'm usually drawn to green (if only because I just can't get that colour to work for me in Star Wars! I just can't seem to pull it off, and given I have one of the lesser Green Marine chapters in 40K, it's a bit embarrassing)

Nice carry by-the-by, looks right convenient. Well, I'm absolutely looking forward to seeing what you're going to do next, mate. Well done, keep it up, and please do keep us all informed :)

Give us some detailshots from those star destroyers... like this you can't see =)

Outer Rim Guadians

Since the meeting with Mon Mothma the Guardians’ numbers have greatly increased, the only problem was equipment. Before the meeting the Guardians were a grand total of four X-wings and a Y-wing bomber squadron, which was perfect for their quick raids on local Tie squadrons and supply convoys. Times were changing though, the Empire knew of them now and the systems that gave them sanction were starting to be squeezed by the might of the Sector 4 Fleet. The Guardians were skilled pilots but still no match for the armada. They were losing hope and faith in the Rebel Alliance.

Then an encrypted message appeared in the background of the latest Imperial Holonet Propaganda Report. The Guardians knew it was for them but were hesitant to respond. However, trap or not they had to take the chance that this signal was the Rebel Alliance…they needed more ships.

They deciphered the message; it was a star chart with coordinates embedded into it. The coordinates were to a very isolated location of space in the outer rim. The founding members were all thinking the same thing, trap, but as they looked at each other they knew they had to go. It was their last hope in the sector. The leader broke the silence, “we are going, gather the men”.

It was quiet and ominous in the dead of space; no one said a word over the coms. The Guardians waited for what seemed like an eternity. Everyone’s fingers ready on the triggers just in case the worst was to happen, they had to be battle ready. It was life or death for them. Then a voice broke the silence over the coms, it wasn’t their leader yet it sounded familiar…

20151027_202548.jpg

“Outer Rim Guardians come in? Is that you?......This is Tycho Celchu of the Rebel Alliance.” The leader quickly responded from his Y-wing, “These are the Outer Rim Guardians, glad to hear your voice again Tycho!” with a smile in his voice. “Good to hear from you too, I’ve come as a representative and to honor your allegiances.” Just as his voice ended the space around them exploded with ships and fighters! Two CR90 Corellian Corvettes, one Nebulon-B Frigate, and one of the newly acquired Assault Frigate Mark II all came into view of the Guardians.

20151027_202741.jpg

Tycho and the fleet pledged their skills to the ideals and honor of the Outer Rim Guardians. They had a chance now and everyone knew it. The coms exploded with joy, the Guardians all knew that the future of their freedom fighters had arrived.

20151027_202917.jpg

Now it was time to make these ships their own.

*Thank you for the kind words, I been keeping up with your fleet since first arriving on this website. Your ships are beautiful and well done. I love doing the lore, for me it provides a added touch to a game. This is just beginning too!*

Ahh, it's nice that they are rewarded, knife-point moment of truth: is it an ambush, is it real, was it merely a lure to get them away, all fun to see. And then, even if it is real, who else knows of it? -laughs- I've played way too much TIE fighter to not suspect someone's going to jump in and try to spoil the party.

Not a problem in the least, fact is I'm duly honoured. I only write lore because I like it, so seeing more of it is a real thrill for me! :) I'm just glad you decided to share it with us, and I'm right glad to hear it. It's off to a promising start! Best of luck, mate. I'll be watching.

Sector 4 Fleet

All was quiet; the sector was different now since the Clone Wars. Before Order 66, the 4th Sector Army was commanded by Jedi Master Ki-Adi – Mundi and the 21st Nova Corps or the Galactic Marines. This area of the galaxy was engulfed in total war. Many of the CIS home systems were in the region and they were constructing ships and droids at an unstoppable rate. Whole planets were wrecked with war and destruction, in the name of freedom…but now…it was peaceful.

The captain looked out of the bridge in his Victory Star Destroyer as the fleet assembled. There were rumors spreading that a new group of rebels were making raids on smaller Imperial patrols and supply convoys. They called themselves the “Outer Rim Guardians”, the captain smirked and chuckled lightly at the thought of those opposing the might of the Empire. “What could a few X-wings and a Y-wing squadron do to the power of the Empire?” he thought. He quickly shook the thought from his mind and turned to the com officer signaling for him.

New orders from Coruscant, the fleet is getting a repainting and update it seems. The Grand Moff Praji has a grand idea of overhauling the fleet and reestablish that “Clone War feel” again. The captain remembered the holo-meeting with Praji saying that the people cheered and praised the 4th Sector Army when they arrived in Clone Wars times; little did he know that the Empire demands loyalty and order from its people not corrupt bureaucratic stalling like the olden days of the Republic but this was not his decision to make. Either way he knew he was just a captain and his ship was getting a new vacuum sealed exterior coat to reflect the 21st Nova Corps of old and some much needed upgrades.

20151025_143218.jpg

*Original Photo of them*

The captain was happy with the fleets new look upon arriving to see it first hand; it was unique and somewhat inspiring. Hopefully the people the sector thought so too, however, that was far from the truth. Imperial agents had recently obtained intel on the Outer Rim Guardians. The rumors were true, they do exist and far more powerful than originally thought.

20151104_203112.jpg

The com officer signaled the captain, “the Grand Moff is contacting us over the holo sir”. “I’ll be right there” said the captain from his quarters. He proceeded to the bridge where he activated the holo, a bluish glowing image of the Grand Moff appeared “Ah captain…I’m sure you have read about the intel in your sector”, “Yes sir”, “Good…then you know that the Emperor is tired of these rebels popping up all over the galaxy, I am assigning you two fighter aces code named Mauler and Howlrunner. They should provide you with the added strength to lead your squadrons into crushing these rebels.” The captain had heard these names before but only in legend, “Yes sir, we will hunt them down and wipe them out…all of them”.

20151104_202832.jpg

The 4th Sector had worked with “big shots” before but not since the Clone Wars and well they were the traitorous Jedi. The captain grinned, with the power of these aces and their rearmed fleet these Outer Rim Guardians were little more than Womp rat in a Sarlac pit.

-End transition of Sector 4 Fleet Archives

Nice worknon the Sector 4 Fleet. Though I think you'll do even more justice to it by giving it a new base colour instead of using the original one.

There is something to be said about an almost Fallout-esque feeling sector of 'peace and tranquility'. Ruined husks and bleak shells, a wonderful legacy of a fight for ideals made manifest. “What could a few X-wings and a Y-wing squadron do to the power of the Empire?” Nice, veeeeery very nice :P

I actually like the idea of the repainting being an event in its own history; it happened on traditional war fronts all the time with vehicle and uniform changes, but the idea of it coming together as a new era and semblance of itself is a great one. The 'big shots' being dispatched is an interesting feeling too, as usually I'd ascribe the position of power to the navy captain over the fighter captain, but sticking with named individuals is interesting. Hmm, wonder how that'll play out when the weights and measures of glory and credit come into question.

I like where the 4th is going colour wise. The Gladiator definitely stands out and is probably my favourite of the three. It does look like a subordinate ship compared to the other two, but the strong bright colour on the dorsal ridge and then the gundecks are quite nice. As for the victories, there's something tht looks very close but not quite the same as the Gladiator. I think it might be the mid-section red plating. Maybe it's just that they're slightly irregular in shape compared to the Gladiator's gundecks*, or maybe that their own aren't painted, but the large plates feel reminiscent of lungs. Warbeast. I'm really looking forward to how this colour palette will fare on the other ships, notably something like a Raider.

Either way, they're neat, well painted, and dramatic. Any particular names in mind yet?

*now that I look at them, I think that might be it. The Victory with the red over the batteries feels a little more similar to the Gladiator.

The color choice is based on the color pattern of the Galactic Marines seen in Ep3, Ive been a huge fan of that army. The pure white combined with that purple marroon just contrast each other so nicely. Hopefully wave 2 will be released soon so I can begin to apply this color pattern to the newer ships.

As for names well...we will just have to wait and see where the story takes us ;). Thanks again for those subscribed and comments.*

Outer Rim Guardians

The leader of the Guardians stood with Tycho on the observation deck of their newly acquired derelict space station. The station was old, clone wars in age but had everything they needed. They stood in silence for a moment while they looked out seeing the new armaments and coloring being applied to their flag ship. She was a beauty in the leaders eyes...normally folks thought the Assault Frigate Mk II was a whale of a ship, not the sleek organic look of the rumored Mon Cal Shipyard vessels. But to him she was the beginning of something great. Paragon was her name, and she was a perfect fit for taking back freedom in this sector. “Soon she will be ready for combat, and I will be proud to fly alongside you my old friend” said Tycho, the leader smiled “Yes my friend, things are going to be different around here…I’m glad to be fighting by yourself side once more”

The seeds of rebellion have grown strong since Tycho has arrived with his fleet. The guardians began to retrofit and repaint all their new fleet to fit their needs and feed their belief in freedom. Months had passed since the fleet had arrived and the Guardians were making great work of the updates. Rumor has it that the Sector 4 fleet was recently repainted and upgraded as well. That only means one thing, the Guardians must be faster.

The leader saw the newly appointed Captain of the Nebulon-B in the hallway, “Hey Whip, how is new ship working out pal?” The leader and Whip have been friends and battle brothers since before the formation of the Guardians; they were battle hardened clone war pilots during old days. Still to this day only few folks know of their true background and why they are identical twins, but now they are the first and second in command of the Guardians. “She is a beauty, still nothing like the ships of old” Whip chuckled, “Did you and the other captains give the new ships names yet?” said the leader. “We have sir, Yavaris is her name.” “Yavaris? That’s an odd name”, “Maybe, but it seems to inspire the squadron pilots” said Whip. “Ok what about the other two ships? The Vettes” said the leader. Whip smiled and laughed “we sort of went a different route with them sir…come with me and I’ll show you.”

They turned the corner and saw the two red and grey Corvettes shinning against the black of space. They looked amazing and somewhat familiar… “You like them sir? We borrowed the old republic red for them. Just like the old days right my brother?” laughed Whip. Nostalgia hit the leader in the face; he smiled “those were the Good ol’ days Whip”. “We named that one Defiance and the other one Remembrance”, the leader nodded “Very fitting my friend”.

*These ships are my very first complete repaint; I wanted to give my rebels that red they were always known for as well as an old era clone wars feel. If you haven’t figured it out I am Clone Wars sort of guy, I know a lot of folks are either indifferent or against the prequels and the Clone Wars TV show. But for me it provided a great pallet of lore and characters to work off of in the Civil War Era. Sorry for the delay in this latest episode just been a busy guy with the holidays coming up. There will be a special episode coming up involving a little less talk and more action, so stay tuned. I hope all is well for folks and Happy Thanksgiving to those in American.*

Still working on that Paragon, eh? After the Nebulon in particular, I'm really looking forward to seeing how that turns out. (Love the whole blood red look on the ships, but the Nebulon's diagonal markings really makes it shine for me). While I'm more partial to Remembrance than Defiance -due to the increased contrast- the inverted pattern does look great. You know, they do bear resemblance to the Consular-class we saw.

I'm seriously starting to believe more and more, that the 'colourful' rebel fleets do look far more inspiring. After all, they're supposed to be rebels inciting rebellion, so as long as they can afford paint (and if they can afford new X-wings, you can budget for paint and a reaaaally big roller :P), the added dash of colour should be afforded to them in more than just the simple red stripe like Redemption. That addition of colour is one thing I rather like about Rebel's Phoenix Cell.

-laughs- identical twin clones, you know, I like that. I know that a lot of people like to think of the Clone War as having entirely engulfed every single world in the galaxy, but I like the thought that many wouldn't recognize a clone out of their distinctive armour. Given that I've been watching Rebels, it feels pretty in keeping with that (even if I'm not a Clone Wars guy :P).

Can't wait to see that Assault Frigate, not to mention all the goodies of Wave 2.

Really like the way you did the Rebels, very Homeworld-esque feel to them.

I tip my hat to you sir, I paint my Rebels in the crimson color scheme as well......it just looks extremely good on Rebel ships.....and squadrons too. Well done.
