Dices and not rolling them by Hand...

By Dobougob352, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The Force flows through you, me, and the dice. Feel the force. The dice are calling... lol.

Seriously, during my first two games I found myself rolling dice and I thought, "what the hell for? That's got to be not just distracting, but annoying too." Now I go out of my way to not even bump the dice when picking them up in fear of using up my good dice roll.

Nice. If I get a good roll i put those 3 to the front for the next time I roll. If one rolls bad, I replace it. Suffice it to say, those up front 3 dice change a lot throughout a game, lol.

Superstitious bunch, aren't we? :D

I love using the app. No messy bumps and you get some cool sound effects. You also have up to 20 dice.

Every time a die bumps a model my imagination cuts to a movie scene where an X-wing is being tailed closely by a TIE who has the Reb dead to rights. The X-wing can't shake him and just as Soontir is about to fire his cannons, in comes a big red octohedron that blindsides him in the solar panel saving the Rebel scum. Makes me chuckle every time hahaha.

I've been playing RPG's and other dice games since 1982... Started with the original black book Travelers game, From there went on to AD&D, this was before there was any editions. ;)

In that time, I have seen more superstitions for dice then I can count. Which is funny, because none of the people I've played with are superstitious by nature, and I've never seen them act out any superstitions outside the game.

One friend of mine for example, would never buy his own dice, always had to be a "gift", often this meant he'd pick out the set he wanted, get up to the counter, hand me or someone else the money and make us pay for it.

Myself when I played I always lined my dice up with the highest number showing, so I could train them to land that way when I rolled... If they're used to the 20 being up, then that's how they'll land when I throw them. :D

I think it's part joke, but also part the basic human desire to exert control over chaos.

If there's enough alcohol in the cup, you tend not to worry too much about the game!

And then don't the dice start rolling even when you aren't even doing something with them?

No, that violates some law of physics. You only THINK the dice are rolling. Or maybe they're rolling in response to the room's oscillation.

How about the dice drop. Or the fixing in the hand. Or the rolling as soon as a person looks away. Had a teenager keep rolling his Y-Wings Agility Dice every time I looked away. 6 evades in a row. Stopped looking away.

I like the app concept but it looks way to clunky to use efficiently. Maybe with a simpler interface and quick response I would consider buying it and using it.

It takes a little bit of practice to be "fast" and truly it's not as "natural" as the real thing but you'll never knock a model over, you don't have to carry around 10+ dice, you get cool sound effects, and if you're truly lazy, you can set it so it will give you a summary of uncancelled hits at the bottom. I don't choose to use that option but it's there. Did I mention is has sound effects? haha.

I still prefer the 'old fashioned' method, but my phone does get used during games for the Star Wars Soundboard app. It's great when you roll for Vader's attack and the soundboard has his voice saying "I HAVE YOU NOW!"

I have the app, for use in tight spaces or when my wife plays (she's currently suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists), but it just is not the same as physically rolling the dice. It's less real.

My sympathies for your wife, Dagonet. I have an annoying, twangy pain in my wrists also, that I suspect may be heading towards CTS, and my wife had Repetitive Strain Injury in her wrists a few years ago, so I know how hard simple things can get sometimes.

Don't wait, take action now before it deteriorates too far. Also have your thyroid checked out, as that might play a role as well and is easier to fix.

My wife's slowly on the mend, but she's been unable to go into work regularly for two years now, good thing we live in a country with decent worker's rights and healthcare.

My take about dice rolling, or really cheating in general is...

If you have to cheat at a miniatures game than you have no self respect and probably have much bigger issues in your life.

I've yet to find an electronic dice roller that doesn't suck so I doubt I'll ever try the app.

I'm not a fan of software based dice rolling... Just doesn't feel right.

I know what you mean. Nothing really beats having the plastic in your hand. However, I've found that with a little bit of practice, it's not a "wrong" experience, just different with its own set of pros and cons.

If you have the time and money, give it a roll (pun intended). I know I've mentioned the sound effects, but I failed to discuss the animation which is very smooth on my phone (iPhone 5S). I thoroughly enjoy having 4-6 dice rolling at once smashing all around with blaster fire accompanying each impact. It is a bit of a bummer when you get a text in the middle of rolling hahahaha. OK, you've convinced me, I'm downloading it.. I'll see how it goes next game.

That's the spirit!

I figured it out. If the app is not good enough to use on a tablet during worlds for the twitch streaming, then it is not good enough for the rest of us.

What was it doing (or not doing)?
