Is "touching" the same as "overlapping?"

By WDWolf, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello!

I was playing my friend yesterday and I was flying Miranda with a double Y-Wing Ionizing escort with bombs! I double Ionized Bossk and the next turn dropped a Conner Net in front of him, because I am a nice guy. Because we knew it would be close, my friend and I were very careful with placing the Conner Net and moving Bossk. In fact, he had me move Bossk. When I placed Bossk down I felt NO resistance from the Conner Net template and no overlap. Bossk went down smoother than a...hmm...never mind. Anyway, it looked like Bossk was touching, see the picture below, but not overlapping. Being a friendly game against a ... friend, I congratulated Bossk on his luck and moved on. Luckily for me, I subsequently Ioned Talonbane onto the same Conner Net.

I posted the picture over on Reddit and someone said they believed that touching counted as overlapping. I checked the rules and I only see "overlapping." Does anyone know for certain?

Must overlap. Touching, just like with another ship, is not overlapping.

"Touching" is a game state that is caused by, but different than, overlapping. "Physically in contact with" (what we would colloquially call touching) is not necessarily the same thing, it is possibly for a ship to be in physical contact with a game element (such as another ship, obstacle or mine token as above) and not be "touching" it in the game sense.

"Overlap", in the game, means just that, that one thing is on top of another.

In the example you are talking about, Bossk did not overlap the net, so it does not detonate and he is not considered "touching" the token (not that that matters with a mine).

That's how I felt it was as well. Nice to have it confirmed. Darn Bounty hunters and their luck!

I wasn't upset by this, I thought it was awesome, it's amazing little moments like these that make the game so much fun!

Thanks guys!
