Technical question - size

By Luddite, in Mutant Chronicles

OK, hi.

Bear with me, i'll get to the question!

I don't use the Mutant Chronicle rules, but i do play a lot of wargames, mostly historical.

I'm currently putting together a 28mm scale collection based around the HG Wells / Jules Verne sotries, and inspired by Alan Moore's 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' graphic novels (and also the back catalogue of inspiration like Spacee 1889).

I'm kicking off the British Imperial invasion of Mars and i've been scouting around for some nice Martian 'gribblies' (i don't like the Barsoom model, and have found some War of the Worlds style Martians which i'm using as 'overlords'...i'm also using spiders (got to really, Bowie would never forgive me...)...

Now then, my human figures are mostly Black Tree Design redcoat British, mixed with some Perry Miniatures (for the camel corps, and the heliographic team), and i've plundered Copplestone for the 'jolly good chaps' and similar explorers and civilians.

BUT, i really like the look of the MC Warmaster Legion figures.

My question is (finally), what scale are these figures at? Most of my figures are 28mm 'foot to eye'. Are these MC figs 28mm foot to eye, or foot to shoulder? Foot to top of head? Or some other size.

Compatability will determine if i buy them...your expert advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid MC's figs aren't 28mm foot to nothing, since they're 54mm... Could be used to make some cool "huge" martian monsters, though...

54mm?

Oh well. sad.gif

Cheers for the reply though, i couldn't see a scale on any of the catalogue figs...probably hidden in plain view.

Still, as you say, might make a nice 'giant' figure...i'll have a think.

Rules?

Well, depending on the scenario, i use a variety of sets.

For smaller scale skirmishes with the 'heroes', i tend to use GWHistorical 'Legends of the Old West' (LotOW) with a bit of conversion work ( http://www.warhammer-historical.com/tow/books.asp ).

Recently i had a survey team head out of Victoria (the British colony on Mars) to survey a nearby valley for the presence of 'red coal' (super-effecient coal that gives steam engines near internal combustion levels of performance)...

It was actually led by Dr Moreau and Dr Jekyll, both of whom had their own agendas...

The military escort was led by Cpt Harry Paget Flashman of course, and the whole endeavour was being run under the auspice of Campion Bond (working not only for the British Govt., but als for the Masonic agency MI6 under the auspice of Prof. Moriarty (soon to be replaced with Mycroft Holmes).

Its safe to say, the native Martian beastmen didn't take too kindly to this invasion of the spider-hunting grounds...

For larger engagements i've used the LotOW mass battle rules, Brother vs Brother, Rapid Fire (v1), and Contemptible Little Armies...but none really hit the spot. I also gave 'Tooth and Claw' a go, but it really didn't fit the bill.

Recently we've got into The Sword and the Flame ( http://www.zeitcom.com/majgen/924tsatf.home.html ). We're using it for an ongoing 28mm Sudan campaign at the moment (the Mahdists are giving the Brits a really hard time), and so i've pinched it for the Mars thing. It works much better for the massed battle engagements as it models the small number of trained Brits vs the massed tribes of Martian beastmen brilliantly, although doesn't handle the British steam tanks very well (nor indeed the Martian tripods, although these haven't made an appearance yet), so i'm always on the lookout...

We also tried the Space 1889 RPG battle rules from the Soldiers Companion supplement, but didn't like the way it worked. the 'tribesmen' (Martians) basically don't get to act for most of the game we found so pretty dull...

Its one of the several campaigns were currently running at the club. We're currently rotating;

HGWells Martian sci-fi - 28mm (skirmish - company level engagements - narrative campaign)

Sudan 1885 - 28mm British/Egyptian vs Madhist uprising...

Battle of the Bulge (1944) - 15mm company to battallion level WWII refight (using mainly the Crossfire rules)

Ancients in-club competition - 15mm De Bellis Multitudinus rules (my Alexandrian Macedonians are doing quite well as ever...)

Must admit, I tend not to wargame as I am typically busy roleplaying, but I have been dying to do a game based on the Forgotten Futures Goodbye Piccadilly material.

Oh god, I forgot you were right next door to me as well...
