2 Imperial ace palp shuttle the new meta

By thestggrwng, in X-Wing

The iowa HOTH charity event draws in big competition and the top 3 this year were all palp shuttle and two aces. Soontir/whisper, soontir/vader, and carnor vader. The whisper/soontir stayed at the top table for the last 4 games. It was crushing the other meta around it. Is this gonna be the number one thing to prepare for when preparing for worlds? Is it too OP?

What was the shuttle packing besides Palpatine?

How does it perform against 4 TLTs?

Autoblaster Turrets, Prox Mines, and Connor Nets are looking like better and better tools to have in a squad.

Are the full results posted somewhere? I didn't see them on list juggler

Well it's the emperor of course he's OP and rightly so, prepare to die rebel dogs.

MORE PALPATINE!

Not unlimited power?

I dunno man. Makes it feel like he's super-micromanagey these days. When he has to hold every pilots hand in battle personally.

It is funny at how many people thought Palpatine was mediocre when revealed (I admit, I wasn't thrilled with him at first).

But, I guess any squad that has any amount of success needs an "X is overpowered" thread.

Add Vader crew to that list.

Played in a massive group championship yesterday where there were a lot of these types of lists. One made top four, the rest got crushed. I crushed one myself first round 100-0. The meta will shift, it always does.

You better at least have a plan for it. I do. :)

And those top 3 were Dustin Poskochil, David Pontier (piqsid), and myself, three guys that have been playing since 2012. So it's not just the squad, although it is a tough one to beat.

I've been saying this for MONTHS.

I said this in another thread. But it's not palp so much as that imps currently have three ps9 aces who are all super powerful and all can be outfitted well for mid 30 point price range.

I won 2 store champs back to back with fel/vader/palp,

The assurance you get with palp is overwhelming,

but what makes this list great is when the opponent goes on the palp you blast with shuttle as well as the aces.

Any list that makes folks change the way they've been playing is immediately branded as OP. It's kind of cute, with how often it happens.

What is the advantage over a decimator w. Palpatine/ace list?

Two aces instead of one

What is the advantage over a decimator w. Palpatine/ace list?

The Decimator is much more vulnerable to TLTs. You either leave 2/3rds of your list out of the fight, or you plan on taking two hits per turn from every TLT within range.

Beating this list depends entirely on your ability to bring down one of the aces early. If you can manage that, you're golden. If you lose a ship or two before you manage it, you're probably screwed. The result? You need to figure our your Turn Zero against this list. You need to know what attack lines will be best, and how you'll trap an ace given your opponent's setup.

It's definitely a powerful list, but not an overpowered one -- and that's because it's highly skill dependent. A really good player will be able to protect his aces while plowing through your list; but it only takes one round of bad positioning to let you punish. Palpatine makes the aces tankier, but they're still susceptible to the usual tricks (like blocking and cornering). That's the difference between this list and some of the old meta lists: it's harder to run effectively, but has a greater payoff. Personally, I'm pretty happy with that, since it means that premier level events will be that much more competitive and prestigious.

What is the advantage over a decimator w. Palpatine/ace list?

It's a trade-off, but the Decimator list is more vulnerable to TLTs and the like. Plus, running the Decimator makes Palpatine a much more viable target; when he's on a shuttle, going after him means ignoring two more valuable ships that are more threatening in the endgame. When he's on a Decimator, going after Palps means targeting the most expensive ship on the table, which is what you want to do anyway.

I've not had the pleasure of facing a Palpmobile yet. Atm I tend to fly VI Vader with a 4-5 tie mini swarm. Means I have plenty of blockers and an ace that should move after the opponents aces.

I see people saying take an ace down early. I see the logic in doing so while there are plenty of guns in play but my instinct would be to actually look for a way to focus down the shuttle first. Removing the emperor dice modification would make it easier to push through damage on a turtled Fel for example and with a lot of dice against low agility, I'd fancy my chances of removing it quickly.

Hearing the plan should be take an ace first, what trap am I maybe falling into here? Is it just that the aces on the Palpmobile list will end up at range one on my mini swarms tail?

Late game shuttle isn't a late game at all

So you can afford to not shoot it

Don't ignore it, though. If you can force it to **** off in an obstacle field and make it 71 points + palp versus your 100 points, it'll help a lot

If you go after the palpmobile, you'll find the aces on your tail hitting very hard as your opponent won't need to consider saving Palpatine's reroll for defense.
