Talismans

By RusakRakesh, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

The book has very few and my imagination ran wild but I would like to know if the assembled here have already constructed new ones... please share!

I am considering giving two of the treasures at the end of the Lords of Nal Hutta adventure module The Dead Road mechanical effects for the Force-sensitive.

The first is the Siren's Soul - a set of 8 crystals that can be played to create beautiful music. Proposed effect - at the end of an adventure 1 PC only who has outstanding Conflict left after reducing it by 1d10 may play and meditate on the music of the Siren's Soul, making a Hard (♦♦♦) Discipline check. Each success further reduces outstanding Conflict by 1, Triumph either removes any remaining conflict or if already zeroed out adds 1 to Morality. Not sure what to provide for Advantages and Threat yet.

The second is the Morrigan Scrolls (Sith writings) - Proposed effect - I haven't decided what to skills or powers to apply it to, but they will provide up to a 5 XP cost reduction on certain skill ranks/power (minimum 5XP cost), costing 1 Morality point per XP. (This is also likely to be the mechanic I use for other Sith writings)

As an aside, because I would like to emphasis the corrupting effects and easy route of the Dark Side I am considering this further house rule.

A Light Side Paragon who does not succeed at a Force power check may make an incidental Discipline check to drawn on their negative emotions, generating additional Dark Side Points once per session. The check is Hard (♦♦♦) for Morality 71-80, Daunting (♦♦♦♦) for Morality 81-90, and Formidable (♦♦♦♦♦) for Morality 91+. Each Dark Side Point used this way automatically reduces Morality and does not add to a sessions Conflict total.

Conversely, Dark Side Paragons who do not succeed at a Force power check may make and incidental Discipline check to calm their thoughts, generating additional Light Side Points once per session. I am not sure yet if I want to upgrade or increase the difficulty of these checks to represent the difficulty of redeeming oneself from the dark side. Like the above, each Light Side Point used this way would be applied immediately as a Morality increase, bypassing Conflict totals.

These would be highly narrative moments when the characters are addressing their fundamental nature and its relationship to the Force.

Are there any references to these kind of items in either canonical or EU material? "magic items" don't seem very Star Wars-esque to me.

A few. KotOR had some. Sith alchemy is part of this. The Darksaber could qualify, or the Dagger of Mortis.

Honestly, until I see a non-Force-sensitive construct a lightsaber (not use), I would place all lightsabers in to the category of "magic item" as well.

I don't view either of the items/effects I am planning on introducing as Force Artifacts/Talismans though, since neither would be attuned to the Force like you see through lightsaber construction or what must happen with Sith Alchemy.

The Siren Soul is a unique mundane artifact that can create amazing music. It serves a potent focusing aid that allows a Force-sensitive to meditate on and reconcile their darker impulse at the end of an adventure, which is what the mechanics represent.

The Morrigan Scrolls are filled with Sith lore and philosphies. Reading them is like studying, thus the XP break, but not without absorbing some of the philosophies of the biggest Dark Side cult in the galaxy, hence the Morality loss.

In both cases these are still mundane items, just ones that have an effect on Morality using characters.

There are a lot, mainly in comics. I see them as great asset to F&D, reinforcing the feel of mysticism and mystery.

Light forced through a crystal emitting energy beam, stabilized by mechanics, isn't magic, but the force is :)

The talisman of the First. It is a talisman from the first jedi before he turned to the darkside. It allows the wearer if lightside to commit one force die to any power without actually using up a Force die. If darkside the user can perform one force power that normally takes an action as a maneuver instead.

Wow, very nice and powerful talisman, I hope you gave them a mega quest to achieve it :)

They don't have it yet. Currently their nemesis who they trained with as a Padawan has it. The story is that seven padawans escaped with the help of Quinlan Vos from the attack on the temple and we're secretly trained with Quinlan and a one armed Mace Windu who survived his fall after the fight with Anikan and Palpatine. They trained for 3 years until one of the seven padawans turned to the darkside and revealed their location to the Enpire. Then the Empire attacked with an Inquisitor assault. The Padawan who turned killed one of the other padawans who one of the players was in love with. Then Mace sacrificed himself to the inquisitors to distract the 5 remaining padawans from escaping with Quinlan. He instructed the 5 to go into hiding and seperate. Then 8 years pass and the padawans find each other after a disturbance in the force drives them to fight once more.

They discover the padawan who fell to the darkside has become a powerful inquisitor himself. He carries this talisman on him.

They have been busy establishing the Aldean resistance and trying to gain other planets to join. They will eventually have to fight him since he is hunting them down. One of the padawans(players) is a clone of Darth Maul so Palpatine wants to recover his lost property. Vader on the other hand wants the clone dead since he knows Palpatine only wants him as Vadar's replacement.
