Suspended Animation/Cryberths?

By jbmacek, in Game Masters

I'm more familiar with tech from Trek, or Traveller, so I could use a little help in answering this question - does Star Wars have suspended animation tech? Low berths? Cryonics? The old deep freeze?

They do, but it's not really used.

Carbonite freezing is used for transport of prisoners and others who might be a real bother were they conscious or even had the possibility of consciousness.

The only time that might be warranted would be if the life-support and hyperdrive were out and the ship, for some reason, had hibernation chambers / carbonite freezing chambers that still worked (remote possibility).

'course, sleeper ships -were- used in the earliest exploration of the galaxy, before the advent of hyperdrive, and it's -possible- that the PCs find such a ship, if the GM wants it to be so...

Planets flying through hyperspace, clone armies, laser beams that destroy worlds. I think you could hand wave this one pretty easy. It's probably not in mass production anymore, since you've got instant-coms on a galactic scale and hyperspace is like a day trip in so many cases, but it's probably out there to be had. Tech is very enduring in the Star Wars universe.

NOTE: If the destination of the journey is in the same region as the starting point, or if the destination is in the same quadrant of the galaxy as the starting point, the travel time is halved. To determine in witch quadrant of the galaxy the destination is located, use the map page.

Longest trip is a week, if you have a decent hyperdrive. A month if you don't.

I'm thinking less along the lines of a cryopod, and more along the lines of a cooler filled with sandwiches.

However, popsicles don't need air, or to be fed. So if you are shipping people by the dozen on the cheap, or you are a certain bounty hunter.....

No problem. Glad to be of service.

that is with a class 1 Hyperdrive

that is with a class 1 Hyperdrive

Which can make a huge difference.

Yes, that is seriously cool. Thanks. Not why I was asking, but cool just the same.

The real reason I was asking was, our next game night is Friday, October 30, so I've been kicking around the idea of doing a "Halloween Special", and I've been leaning toward a Dracula theme, with some ancient Dark Force entity being accidentally released from hibernation. He's out for blood, and only the PCs can stop him. Thus, my interest in cryoberths, etc.

And, as a follow-up, is there a way to edit post titles? Cryberths is bugging me, and I want to change it to cryo.

Nope.

There is a race called the Anzati that would be perfect for this

I've read the Wookieepedia entry. Interesting. Do we have stats for them yet?

Look at Enter the Unknown and find the equipment entry for Specimen Containers. These contain life support and stasis tech for the occupant(s), and a large container (which is itself Encumbrance 5) can hold 1-2 humanoids. These things are quite cheap and readily available.

Carbonite freezing is not really common practice, it bugged me that they used it in the clone wars because it was supposed to be a highly experimental procedure Vader was improvising that was actually intended for transporting the volatile and dangerous ??tiberium?? (or something like that) gas that cloud city was... mining? extracting? whatever. So, if you were looking for a cryopod for regular transport that would be silly. But for an ancient menace revived from the depths of time it would be ideal. Or, you know, an ancient cryo pod from even long longer ago.

Ah, but where did Darth Vader get the idea from in the first place...?

I think the "experimental" part was more due to the purpose-built facilities than to the actual process. After all, C-3PO knew exactly what was going on at the time of Han's freezing, and Leia knew about "hibernation sickness."

Well you don't have to create a new race just add notes that it possesses its victim and eventually wears them out due to darkside corruption requiring them to seek a new host every so often... ;)

You know before it becomes obvious their host is dying and anybody else notices they've changed a mite too much... :o

Could use the carbonite process as a means of trapping them, but they don't know that when they originally released the said creature...

Make the victim an npc and you could turn this into a long term patron or friend of the PCs until it comes out of hiding....

Now just imagine they think they've killed it but don't know how it possesses others let alone how long it takes (say just physical contact and by that I mean normally bare flesh contact unless you want to be really nasty and reveal it can pass through the sealed end of an airlock and possess the person on the other side if it wants...)

Come to think about it other than watching that Denzel Washington movie on this subject have you watched any of the The Mummy movies?

Now design this creature using the Brendan Fraser movie series as a guide and then cut it loose!

Talk about a campaign!!! :)

...and scrolling to the end of OneKelvin's post, 10 minutes. :)

I myself wouldn't call carbon freezing cyberberth's a common thing even if it turned into such in EU??. It seemed to be very experimental in ESB. Han was a test subject. Carbon freezing wasn't intended to be used for a cyberberth. It was just an alternate use thought up on the spur of the moment.

EDIT ...then I read awaajeputyouewepn's post and he made good points.

It was also used in an episode of TCW ("The Citadel") to bypass security to rescue some prisoners from a Separatist prison.

Another use for Cryo chambers in a society like Star wars would be emergency preservation of a Critically injured,or sick patient.
