This is probably too much to hope for. But...
I was just browsing Steam, and they had an announcement for Total War: Warhammer. Now, if you're not familiar with the Total War series, it's a strategy game where battles are real-time and everything else is turn-based. It's grown over the years to allow pretty massive armies on the field. They've had some hits and misses, but overall, it's a good series. They've focused in the past on Japan, Medieval Europe, Rome, the American Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. To my knowledge, this is the first time they've tackled fantasy, and an existing IP.
Honestly, it was shortly after i started playing L5R that I thought, "This would be amazing for Total War!" My first hope was, "Is this a collaborative effort between Sega and FFG!? If it works, could they just dip farther into the pool and ride that new L5R license to glory!??!"
I'm pretty sure that's a no. I'm not keeping track of who actually owns what and who's just licensing it, but it ain't gonna be that simple. But still, if people know people who know people...
This is kinda just a hopeful fanboy squee. I apologize. Carry on.
Total War: L5R? (not likely)
War hammer is owned by GW not FFG. FFG would not be involved with the Total War video game.

Yeah, I figured that out after I got my brain back in gear. I never followed Warhammer much, so I wasn't up on if FFG bought it or just licensed it. And then I'm pretty sure they also just licensed L5R. So I guess I'm just hoping for the right folks to meet up and start talking next time Games Workshop hosts a party. That's how it works, right? Just a big game of corporate Telephone?

Games Workshop created and owns Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. FFG just licenses it from them to create board, card, and formerly role playing games using the IP.
FFG bought Legend of the Five Rings from Alderac Entertainment group, FFG are now the owners of the L5R license.
Edited by ToqtamishI would buy it. ALthough for the most part all you really need to do is mod TW2 Shogun
Why not though. Would be epic having Kisada or Yoritomo on the field.
Shuggies might be a bit tricky to work in with the number of things they can possibly do.
If they can handle Warhammer super powers, then they surely can handle shugenja.
Hello everyone.
I have been working on a mod for L5R for Medieval 2 total war kingdoms.
Progress has been good but there are still ways to go.
You can follow my progress on YouTube, or on the total war forums.
Introduction to Rokugan Total Clan War

I feel mixed if going grand-RTS style is the right fit for L5R.
I feel the social/political aspect of the game is very important so any L5R game needs a healthy amount of diplomacy and dialogue sprinkled in it.
I'm somewhat partial to turn-based games, and I like the idea of alternating court/war turns. First you handle all your political moves, then your military moves.

The Total War series actually involves quite a bit of making/breaking alliances, developing your society, and making sure your people don't get too upset on the home front. I think L5R could do quite well as a Total War setting.
Let's be honest: the premiere Total War game, Shogun, was essentially the kind of historical conflict L5R is based around.

Nah, they're clearly unrelated. I mean, Shogun actually has samurai fighting with weapons that aren't katana! Have you ever heard of anything so ludicrous?!

Ashigaru butchering samurai from the comfort of their Yari Wall?

Funny story about that. I once decided to play a game on Very Hard, just to see what it was like. After a few, simple auto-resolves, I actually commanded a battle myself. Part of the battle involved dealing with some inexperienced, light scout cavalry trying to outflank me, so naturally I sent three full-strength, experienced Yari Ashigaru. After a few minutes, wherein I managed to take out 90% of the cavalry with minimal losses to my guys, all three nearly full-strength yari units suddenly lost all morale and fled. Apparently "Very Hard" is TW shorthand for "L5R mode". XD
(In case anyone's curious, there were no archers or other units involved in that part of the battle, the enemy commander was nowhere near close enough to rally them, and I deliberately left enough space for the enemy to retreat so they wouldn't go into "fight to the last man" mode. I honestly have no idea what happened, but that's the last time I ever bothered trying Very Hard mode in a TW game.)

Their stamina dropped to very tired or exhausted.

So they got tired and broke before the scouts who were fighting for the same period of time, had already marched the entire length of the map, were suffering catastrophic losses against foes with advantageous weapons, and were vastly outnumbered by the enemies they had barely scratched? How in the world is anyone supposed to play the game at that difficulty, then? O_o
EDIT: Also, thinking of Shogun 2, FFG please give the Wasp Clan whistling arrows!

By camping in a blob and having your general nearby, of course

Ah, of course! I had forgotten the oft-overlooked Bushido Virtue of Camping!
Also if you dont feel like Total war can give enough of the diplomacy side of things, Sengoku, or Crusader kings can certainly do that, tho you lose a lot of the combat aspects of it at that point, so there is that
Total War doesn't strike me as the right franchise. If I would want a video game it would be Civilization Rokugan.

Only in Rokugan would I accept spearmen successfully defending a city against an army of battletanks.
Sadly, I think a Total War: L5R crossover is unlikely, BUT the Total War franchise is known to have an active modding community. There's a mod for Medieval 2 that turns the entire thing into a Legend of Zelda: Total War. A Mod for Shogun 2 into L5R probably wouldn't be that hard to do.
The Total War games do feel like the perfect fit for L5R to me. They have a great mix of diplomacy AND warfare. A clan that likes to avoid warfare, such as the Crane or the Phoenix, would be able to exist and still be lots of fun to play. Plus, you could make the Hantei a powerful neutral faction that will go ape on you if you act dishonorably, and attack your enemies if you are very honorable. That way honor and dishonor would matter, just like the card game!
