What do you expect your players to pick for character races?

I'm a Larviking, I just live on Sotra cool.gif

Yeah, and I am a stril. gran_risa.gif I am original from Askøy, which is almost the same as Sotra. Anyway counting the days now. Will propably put on a pre-order by the end of month. see ya

I can understand "human only" rules coming from v1 players as elf and dwarf characters were so much more powerful than human ones. I can understand such rules for a particular campaign as well, but that cuts both ways (an all human and halfling city scum campaign makes sense as does an all dwarf honor the ancient oath or an all elf searching for lost kin campaigns).. The idea that playing an elf or dwarf underminds the grittiness is silly (we're talking about races that are dying out faster than humans here) as is the idea that a near human race with tons of fiction written from their viewpoint is too alien for a person to play well is silly. The difference between a modern and medieval mindset is a much bigger gulf.

I agree with you there Cynical Cat

I believe that such rulings comes from the first edition of the game (speaking generally). I usually likes to GMing "open" gampaigns that don`t limit races or career choices. I write a short essay of what kind a campaign it will be, give it to my players, and make some suggestions of what would be good choices for the campaign.

I try to pack a lot into my campaigns, so for instance one part could be helping dwarfs finding an old heirloom in a Karak, the next could be doing shady deals with a crimelord in Altdorf, all a part of the bigger picture. I don`t do specialized campaigns, like military campaigns or one race campaign. I have more of a Lord of the Rings approach to Gming.

But everyones taste. gui%C3%B1o.gif

I think my players will choose one of two:

Luc - High Elf or Wood Elf

Tom - Wood Elf or Dwarf

Wik - Human or Dwarf

Bart - Human or Dwarf

Meggi - Wood Elf or High Elf

Asia - Human or Wood elf

Thic can be very interesing when they all will play in one group (sometimes I'm making two group of them and they are playing against each other - those are the coolest sessions).

Matt: Human

Kyle: Human or High Elf

Ryan: Wood Elf or High Elf

Dave: Human or Wood Elf

Dustin: Any

thats the breakdown im looking at

Otherwise my group have already decided to go human only campaign. The characters are attached to the military arm.

My players are fine with doing a human only campaign.

The main, most important reason is that all the PCs are cousins.

Even the player who typically loves Dwarfs is open to the idea.

Phew! That was a relief to find out.

I think one of the reasons why humans are a prefered player race for many WFRP players, has do to with the rich details and knowledge available about the human realms. Especially when it comes to the 2nd edition, where you could choose from a wide array of human cultures, like provincial differences. And the Realm of the Ice Queen, and Tome of corruption, took the step even further by introducing new human races like the norsemen, Kurgans (barbarians), Ungols (civilized barbarians) and godspodars (a slavic like people), complete with racial characteristics, talents and unique careers.

While the elfs, halflings and dwarfs , have not been subjected to such a treatment. And that is What I think is the major reason why players tend to neglect the other races in warhammer. If they where given the same treatment, I bet people would feel that they are a important factor to the Warhammer setting. When lacking proper information on a player race, a player might be tempted to compare with other rpg games or traditional beliefs on these fantasy races. And that is an error, for it may lead to a parody -like imitation.

And I firmly think FFG are going to do something with that error in the new edition.

I can only speak for my group but I predict something like this (by the way I will be getting the adventurers toolkit so Halflings are an option):

Tom: Human (very occasionally Dwarf or Halfling - but played a Dwarf during Paths of the Damned so this is unlikely)

Tony: Human (has just played a long term Halfling so will fancy a change)

Tim: Human

Will: Wood Elf/High Elf (the prospect of Wardancers will probably tempt Will towards Wood Elves at least once - his favourite 2nd Ed D&D characters were a Bladesinger and an Archer)

The point is, I don't need rules (or even social alienation) to restrict the use of Elves as three of my players are so rabidly anti-elf that they would never play them. I dn't think my players have ever been tempted by statistical benefits - they like down to earth, everyday characters and play them with a healthy dose of realism (they have point blank refused to continue an adventure before because their characters thought that it 'was too **** dangerous!').
