Let me get this straight- Epic clarifications

By Herowannabe, in X-Wing Rules Questions

so I'm about to enter my first real epic game in a few hours here, and I want to make sure I am clear on a few things, especially rules that have changed since the beginning of Epic:

It used to be that huge ships started with no energy, but now they start with full energy and all their upgrades at full energy, right?

I thought I remember seeing that they changed the wording on turbolasers so instead of doubling the defender's agility you give them +1 green die, but I can't find that anywhere so I guess I'm mistaken. I think maybe I got it mixed up with primary huge ship weapons. They used to add 1 green die to the defender at range 3, +2D at range 4, and +3D at 5, but now it's just a flat +1D at anything range 3 or higher, right?

Huge secondary weapons (quad lasers, turbolasers, etc) still do no add any range bonuses, right?

Vader (crew) on the raider- when he damages his own ship the ship can choose to take it in either fore or aft section, right? Likewise, Mara Jade stresses at range 1 from the entire ship, not just range 1 from the aft section, right?

Any other commonly overlooked rules/scenarios that I should be aware of?

Almost right. They now start with full energy on the ship itself and all equipped secondary weapon upgrades. This means that turbolasers and such start with energy, but Ionization Reactor does not.

Yeah, you got that mixed up. Turbolasers still double the agility. The change was to primary weapons - they now grant a flat +1 agility die at range 3+.

Huge secondary weapons (quad lasers, turbolasers, etc) still do no add any range bonuses, right?

Correct.

Vader (crew) on the raider- when he damages his own ship the ship can choose to take it in either fore or aft section, right? Likewise, Mara Jade stresses at range 1 from the entire ship, not just range 1 from the aft section, right?

Correct on both counts, as far as I understand it. The exception to this kind of rule is upgrade cards which add an Action option (WED Repair Droid, for example) - for those, the action must be taken by the ship section that has the upgrade.

Any other commonly overlooked rules/scenarios that I should be aware of?

Read the asteroid placement rules for Epic carefully. They're weird. You end up placing 12 asteroids, but in close-together pairs. It feels more like having 6 jumbo asteroids that are more spread out than normal.

Incorrect. The opposing player would pick the location. Vader Raider isn't usually a good option.

From the FAQ:

If a huge ship suffers damage from a source that does not

explicitly affect a single section, the opposing player chooses

which section suffers the damage. Crippled sections cannot be

chosen.

Holy cow, I totally missed that. Could have made a big difference in a scenario I played with a friend a couple weeks ago.

Thanks everyone! And yeah, someone pointed out the correct Vader-raider rules to me before it became applicable. Fortunately (?) the Vader Raider was off by itself the whole game turning around some rocks and didn't see any action until near the end.

You put Vader on an Imperial capital ship and were concerned about asteroids!?

It has clearly been far too long since you last watched TESB.

Note also that the restriction for placing asteroids no closer than range 2 from the board edge only applies to the player edges - not neutral edges.

Where in the FAQ is the quoted section above? I've search all through FAQ 3.2.2 and Epic tournament rule 3.2 to find that section. I cannot find it anywhere. Does anyone know what page/section/paragraph it is in? It's obviously important. Did it exist in an earlier FAQ, but was taken out? I can't find anything stating that.

Slugrage, where did you see that in the FAQ regarding Vader on the Raider?

EDIT: I found it in the huge ship rules reference, page 3, Damage section, 4th paragraph.

Slugrage was mistaken. That paragraph comes from the Huge Ship Rules, not the FAQ. Page 3, about halfway down the page on the left, last paragraph under the "Damage Heading."

Yeah yeah, I make mistakes. Deal with it. :P

Vader (crew) on the raider- when he damages his own ship the ship can choose to take it in either fore or aft section, right?

I've nothing to add apart from: *snigger*.

(What? It's a quiet Saturday night at home and I'm sitting on the couch browsing the Web while the wife sews Tutus for an upcoming craft fair.)
