How big is your scene?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

Jumping off from this thread, I'm curious what your Armada scene is like. How many regular players do you have and how many locations (stores, homes, etc.) does your community frequent?

I'd say that my area (Portland, OR and environs) has about 15 regulars at the moment, scattered over 5 stores. If people play at home, I'm not aware of it (Lyraeus and I once played at my place, and there was another game here and there, but nothing regular). As a result, there are several overlapping mini-scenes of about 3-5 players each.

This makes for regular tournaments (ie. not like Sullust, which was a bigger draw) being in the 4-6 player range.

So, what's your scene/community like?

City of Calgary Hothgary has 2 Major and 1 Minor store involved directly with Armada (with 3 other stores that deal in X-Wing).

Major Stores are The Sentry Box and Myth Games with Revolution Games standing up as a minor store after Sullust.

Sentry Box is of course, massive, and we pull in 4-6 players Fortnightly for our Armada League, which operates alongside the X-Wing games on Sundays. Actual Tournaments are few and far between, but we had a 6 player mini-tournament in our League, a 12 Man Sullust tournament previously, and another Sullust tournament coming up in November due to Lion Rampant sending 2 Kits (probably due to their size/status).

Myth Games holds Monthly Tournaments on Saturdays (and thus, I'm unable to attend and get numbers), but I know that a few players cross over from Myth to Sentry and vice versa. They had to delay their Sullust 1 week due to kit not being posted on time, but when they did run it, they ran with 8 players, I believe.

Revolution games had 4 players on their Sullust tournament, and they had to play on 4x3 tables due to reduced space. Revolution is new to Armada (normally specialising in other Non-GW, to compete with our GW store), so I was surprised they even did that.

Furthermore, I know that just outside of Calgary, we have at least one player in Olds, and at least 2 in Red Deer, where their store does a ton of X-Wing (18+ players) but is yet to really jump into Armada (as the store owner overcommited to Star Trek)...

Red Deer players take about 1.5hours to Drive into Calgary... Which is about my Transit Time from the South of Calgary up to the Sentry Box.

So, yeah, The Sentry Box tends to bounce btween 4-12 players event depending... The core group is probably closer to 18-20 or so, we just don't see them all at once, as some hit Saturdays, and some hit Sundays.

I wish we had 4-6 players. . . we are getting close. . . Sadly, 2 out of the 5 stores don't have any leagues but they are the most active Tournament wise. The 3 Main stores in the Portland Area are Guardian Games (which is a 10,000 square foot store, and has no league but is always ready for a game to go down), Red Castle Games (good sized store that loves to get tournament kits but no league yet), and lastly my current favorite The Portland Game Store (which I am working on a league that starts next month).

Guardian Games and The Portland Game Store are great because they offer alcohol which is a booster. All three stores are in the City of Portland but in completely opposite ends.

I play at home(s) with about 4 other friends. We had 17ish show up to Massing of Sullust. 2 stores in the (immediate) area support Armada.

I play at home, weekly turnout is somewhere btwn 2-4 people. At MoS there were 13 in the one store that I know of which rubs tournaments in the area.

I also live in Hothgary(love the name), havn't been able to play at LGS since my work requires me on weekends. However, after the new year maybe "the League of Extraordinary Old Guys"(theres 4 of us that gather at my place every Thurs night) will visit the Sentry Box and be able to meet and play with Drasnighta and the Lads. Looking forward to it!! :)

I operate out of one shop. We have about 6 regular players and about a dozen all together. I can usually manage to play about a game a week.

5 ideally, but in actuality its really only myself and a buddy. Gaming at my store in general is dropping off.

My scene is virtually non-existent. My first tournament experience was a poorly attended Massing at Sullust event put on by 1 of only 2 local game stores. From what my FLGS tells me there is a base of customers that buy it but not many at the point at or with the interest in playing strangers.

Most of the "scene" is focused in Toronto with several medium to large stores but that is a good hour away for me (can be 2 with traffic), with some activity in Burlington (20 mins away) and Mississauga (45 minutes).

Lynnwood, Washington Around the Table Games - 4-6 players about 2-4 at any given time. We had 11 for MoS.

to clarify other stores in CT have 10ish people so most tournaments have a pretty decent turnout. My store has 2-5 people.

We've got around 10-15 regular players in the area who make it to 1-2 game nights a week, rotating between stores. We can usually have 2-4 simultaneous games rolling on one of these game nights.

We've also gotten a lot of new players recently thanks to demo games at a local gaming convention as well as the high visibility game nights.

Our tournaments can pull out 12 people easy. The only time we've run fewer lately was due to the limited venue rather than limited interest from players.

We had four Massings at Sullust, each with a turnout of ~10 players.

Hoth you say? Well, I live pretty close to the real Hoth location. Nice mountains, but few players. Playing at home mostly.

NEPA has less players that I know of than I can count on one hand. Me and my good friend split our costs so far, mostly because he likes it, but has no interest in tournament play. I know the FLGS has an employee buying in with Wave 2, and one of the X Wing guys from the same store has bought in, but doesn't have much at the moment. I've got a message from one guy on here, but I don't have any contact with him.

Tactical Advantage in Kingston (right outside of Wilkes Barre) is the local store, and I have a feeling we will see some casual play/tournaments post wave 2. But for now, it's mostly X Wing, and by far some of the most friendly people I've encountered who play the game.

Also started the XW/Arm/IA group for the local (see my signature), so hopefully it grows.

My bit of the UK we have about 20. Normally 4-6 playing on any particular games night, and had 2 Massings.

Not bad really for a town like ours!

I play in Tulsa Oklahoma at 2 stores Team Covenant and Top Deck Games. We have around 8 regular players and 6 occasional players. I manage to get in a game per week normally with a 3 game tournament once per month.

There are so many other good games to play it is hard to make more time. :)

Me, and 3 other people (one of them is my wife) who all use my ships. I usually design the rebel and imperial fleets, and then they choose which side they want after reviewing the cards.

I certainly understand this. When I was young I had no money but lots of time. Now I am older I have enough money and almost no time.

Wichita Kansas.

2 regulars and I'd say maybe 2-4 occasionals.

Me and the other guy are going to start a league soon. Currently real life stuff has delayed us both in getting it going, but I expect that within the next month we should have it all planned out and ready to go. (Knock on wood)!

Hoping that a league will generate more interest.

This one of the reasons why I became a teacher. I work 60 hour weeks during term time.... but i get 3 months paid leave a year.

The other reason is that it's the best job ever, if you get the right school.

:D

Endor-couver here?

Greater Vancouver has a pretty good scene. In fact, it sounds almost exactly like Tvayumat's description. I help run the Armada night at our monthly tabletop gaming club, and it's been getting more and more interest. We had upwards of 10 players interested last week...

I think you're forgetting or neglecting the scenes across the rivers, which include Dice Age Games and Rainy Day Games. You may not get out there much/ever, but they are still within our communal sphere, so to speak.

But overall, by the numbers I'm reading here, we're still seeing this overall community in its infancy. We still have a lot of work to do to get more people playing. Lyraeus really is doing yeoman's work in this regard. As self-appointed organizer at Red Castle, which I'll probably be doing alongside X-Wing in order to help X-Wing make a return there, I know it's not ready for a league. Also, I'm interested in trying something slightly different and slightly more narrative.

But to all of you out there: Edsel62 you organized your Sullust, right? Are you employed by the store, or are you a volunteer, like Lyraeus and myself? How about the rest of you? Do your stores actively try to make things happen, or do they just offer the space and allow you to organize yourselves?

I was asked to TO sullust, which I did. Right now the store doesn't do anything to promote the game but is on board to promote it if me and my friend start the league for example.

I don't work there, am just interested in the game and want to grow and expand the player base to increase the opportunity to play.

At The Sentry Box, our TO was an Employee, who was also a Player. He's since sold his Armada on, but still Coordinates with us to ensure we have Tables on our Gaming Days.

Otherwise, I'll now be doing the TOing directly for the League when it Restarts (and coughing up my own money for the kits, etc)... I'll also be intending on running my own Events at the 'Box when able (ie, when my 2 year Old gives me the time), and I think the Sentry Box may intend to keep running tournaments as well with their Employee TO oversight.

2 different stores anywhere form 8-12 players.

Might be higher after Sullest, that event garnered alot of attention for the game.
