Collaboratively brainstorming a Grand Endeavor

By Sebastian Yorke, in Rogue Trader

Dear GMs & Players,

Do you think it would be possible for us to put together a Grand Endeavor, created by all of us together?

I could do some "pseudo" Project Management and organize threads, deciding themes, minor endeavors included and assigning To Do's.

We would need people to write gazeteers & character profiles, meddle with the endeavor mechanics, balance space and ground battles, etc.

At this point, I am just evaluating how feasible would this be and how many volunteers we can get.

So please, if you'd like to volunteer as tribute or have any thoughts/concerns/suggestions, please do say!

Thanks!

well what topic ?

  • Conquering a pocket empire of xenos ?
  • Exploiting a star cluster ?
  • Converting a swath of renegade planets back to imperial light ?
  • Finding the main heretic (needle) in the subsector (haystack) ?

The first step would be to brainstorm for that theme - after we can identity if we have enough support. :)

Some other ideas nevertheless:
The Rak Gol Crusade
Aubrai's Anvil (cant recall if that's the correct name from EotA) and the First Koronus Forge.

The Koronus Compact (forge a massive trade route crossing all subsectors in the expanse)

Regardless of the main theme, IMO it should have plenty of non-combat action, something that some of the books lack a bit. As much roleplay as dakka.

Hmmm...I'd like to, but I'm way too busy with my own campaign. But, I'll lay out the way I've been approaching it. The RT is the grandson of a great explorer that disappeared in the Expanse. Said Great Explorer left a star chart behind that led into the Cauldron, to a star cluster inside a warp storm. The party visited Damaris, where the local Bishop had the Great Explorer's Last Will & Testament. Part of the Last Will included the star chart. The players decided they would follow the star chart and find the Great Explorer's lost ship, the Glorious Endeavor .

If you're playing in the campaign, now would be a good time to stop reading...

So I named the endeavor Locating the Glorious Endeavor since the players came up with that nomenclature. It's a monumental endeavor. It's made up of 9 lesser endeavors...so far. I've only outlined the first three. They are: Opening the Cauldron (a greater endeavor), Exploring the Warp Stasis Bubble (a greater endeavor), and Establishing Dynasty Rule (a grand endeavor). Actually, the players already know this much, so NOW would be a good time for them to stop reading...

I've named the other endeavors inside the monumental endeavor, but I have plenty of time to flesh them out as the campaign progresses. The involved star systems were randomly generated. I then tied together all the random elements inside those systems into an overarching storyline. Then I reverse-engineered many of the remaining parts that didn't fit into the big picture into a bunch of minor stories and plotlines that can branch off the main storyline. Okay, it's really time for you (you the players in the campaign) to stop reading...

The star systems involved have colonies the Great Explorer established, other human remnants, archeotech ruins, Yu'Vath ruins, Ork remnants, a Rak'Gol presence, Eldar Exodites, Corsairs, and Harlequins, and eventually a Chaos artifact surrounded by a horde of worshippers. One of the systems is in a Warp Stasis, where psy powers can't be pushed. That gave me the idea to put the whole inside the Cauldron...a safe bubble in the storm...the Eye of the Hurricane. Several of the systems are Ill-Omened, which gave me the inspiration to attach Yu'Vath identities and Rak'Gol guardians to the numerous unidentified xenos ruins. One of the systems is a Lost Empire with mixed human and Eldar populations, which gave me the idea of using Exodites, and of course Exodites have secretive Corsair guardians. Numerous derelict Roks encouraged me to populate some of the planets with feral orks, some on the verge of rediscovering space flight. The Pirate Haven inspired the inclusion of Chaos, which inspired its Harlequin observers.

You are, of course, welcome to borrow any of this material. It's all in the links I've posted in other threads, mostly under my house rules section. I'm more than happy to re-post the particularly relative links here if you'd like.

Like many people, I have issues with the PF and AP systems. I like PF. I even like APs (I know many don't). I just don't like the way some ship components work within the AP system. It's way too unbalancing. I fixed this by making sure those components have to be used in order to give the party a bonus. For example, simply performing a trade objective within an endeavor isn't enough to garner +125 APs for a main cargo hold. They have to actually use that cargo hold, and those things are HUGE. When I see people draw schematics of ships I really get the idea most people don't understand just how large these ships are. The entire US Navy can fit inside one of them several times over. So the players really have to work at it in order to fill one up. Another example is luxury passenger quarters. For every one of these utilized, there'd have to be much more room given over to passengers in steerage. Hey, rich people need servants, and those servants don't travel first class. And let's not forget the luggage. Of course, you have to visit a particular type of place in order to find passengers in the first place. A hive world in the Calixis Sector would work just fine for that. Of course, that means a long trip back to civilization just to utilize that component. It better be worth it.

I could ramble on and on. Digression is required in my career. So I'll leave it at that and maybe post again when my mind is more focused.
