Tired of navigating 3 separate forums?

By Bokmog, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Then come join my new project! A FFG Star Wars RPG community IRC channel!

My vision is having a 24/7 IRC channel on the foonetic server that provides a centralized location for all members of the FFG Star Wars community to congregate!

A place to chat while you read through your books, a place to goof off with like minded people, a place to organize in real time!

THIS IS NOT AN ROLEPLAY IRC! It's meant to act as a "hub" or main "lobby" for those seeking online community.

ALL roleplay will be asked to be taken to private channels :)

We need people with strong IRC backgrounds who would be interested in contributing some time!

If you are interested, can you help us build a Q&A bot that references wiki's or online resources?

If you are interested, can you help us build a personalized bot that creates humor and smiles?

We need people interested in participating!

Does an IRC community excite you? Do you want to have a place to congregate in real time?

Can't always use skype or google, but want to stay social? #swrpg IRC community can help!

Here's how you can get involved!

Download one of these clients: http://xchat.org/- http://www.mirc.com/ - Or any other IRC client you fancy!

Server Info: irc.foonetic.net 6667 #swrpg (if you're not familiar with IRC, after you connect to the server, type /join #swrpg)

Hope to see you all there! I hope we can spark an interest and build something together!

Then come join my new project! A FFG Star Wars RPG community IRC channel!

And how does this help? The problem with IRC is that to get answers, both the asker and the person with the knowledge have to be online at the same time. Even if the chat logs are archived and made searchable, they don't easily help someone really find an answer to a question they have, leading to questions just getting asked again and again and again. Even with the chat being available 24/7, most people are only around for an hour or two at most during their free time, which means people from different sides of the oceans will rarely be able to help each other out.

WTF is IRC?

Edit:

I mean I've heard of IRC, but didn't it die over 10 years ago? We could just fax each other stuff.

Would be Nice if they just combined the 3 Starwars settings into 1 forum.
but I don't think a IRC Chanel is a good substitute.

I think combining would be a better option. With this forum becoming the root. then an Edge and an Age and a F&D sub forum. along with the GM one here.

In Realtime Chat

Or Internet relay chat

IRC is still heavily used for a ton of things. I know most of the Open Source projects I use have IRC channels open with moderators and other users that provide for help with the software. But that is great for projects like PERL or PHP with MILLIONS of active users. Not so much for niche markets like this RPG.

Mingling the three forums, and just add [EotE] [AoR] [F&D] tags to book-appropriate threads.

Otherwise, its just one big system.

Couldn't we just blow the dust off our old ICQ numbers and do it that way?

Uh oh.

Tired of left clicking on 3 forums and typing a few words into a search function? I can't imagine why 68% of the country is obese or overweight.....

On another note... The last thing I want to have happen is all the discussion and questions move off to a location that the Developers themselves never/rarely see or visit...

That is part of the purpose of Publisher Forums like this.

Fan run forums are nice .. but it

#1 Adds another Place people would be going, in addition to these forums.... it would never take away everyone from these forums... Which appears to be the, at least partial, purpose of your OP.

#2 would detract from the Forums themselves, IMO, People come here because it is official.

It's a Neat Idea... and I have Seen forums where they had a side bar on the Forums themselves with a instant chat/IRC ...

But unless it is Like that.. a Side bar on the forums themselves...I don't think I would participate, I already have memberships to enough other sites for the various games I run and play.

The publishers don't come here. Just an FYI.

I typically just stick to this forum for this game.... though if I did feel the need for the other two, I open another tab.

I wouldn't assume none of them do. They may not post as such, whether by preference or policy, Possibly only lurking.

But assuming they don't at all is naive. I can't say they do for certain.. But for those same reason neither can you say they don't. After all.. Some one from FFG is answering the Developer questions.... Developer/Publisher, Tomato/Tamato

Well, I am attempting my hand at a project. If you're not interested you could always ignore the idea :)

I'm not trying to replace these forums OR substitute a wiki. I'd like to make this IRC channel an addition to the community.

Some people are at computers a lot (like myself) and I figured an open 24/ chatroom with other hardcore star wars rpg fans would be nice.

Like I said in the original post, somtimes people can't be on Skype or Google Voice, but still want to be social about this game and others as well.

Also, this would not require any subscription or anyone signing up with anything (other than creating an IRC nick).

Thanks for the replies I guess :/

I'm also not trying to put down the forums at all either. I'm just trying to express a common idea!

Right, works for me as well.

Sorry, I am not trying to be a downer on your Idea, But the way you presented it...

Tired of navigating 3 separate forums?

That is the way it came off as.

Now I do tend to have my Gmail and Google hangouts open...and such a Place could be easily used as a FFG Star Wars fans hang out to chat.

but I don't even keep my Skype Logged in all the time anymore...

Having a place to chat live Might be interesting, For the purpose of chating in real time...

but duplicating all the information and Q&A that is already here.. not so sure about.

Moderators do, as do some of the writers, if some posts are to be believed (and I have no reason to doubt the claims).

Also, this would not require any subscription or anyone signing up with anything (other than creating an IRC nick).

And this is another problem with IRC. Anyone is allowed to use any nick as long as it isn't currently in use. Some IRC systems require one to register the nick with a NickServ which can help, but otherwise can make things, like moderation, a bit of a pain. Especially if the the channel doesn't have someone from the server running it.
