Force Awakens trailer within 2 minutes

What about Gary Oldman for Karrde?

As for Mara, let's just not do Scarlett Johansson.

Mara Jade - Karen Gillan? Isla Fisher? Kate Mara? Rose Leslie?

What age would she be depicted at? That drives the casting quite a bit...

I'm on board for Trejo as Karrde.

First choice - - - - - Last Choice

Thrawn - Orlando Bloom, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jim Caviezel

Pellaeon - Michael Kitchen, Patrick Stewart, David Thewlis

Karrde - Antonio Banderas (cultured), Guy Pearce, Danny Trejo (roguish)

Jade - Kate Beckinsale, Emilia Clarke, Paz Vega

Accents:

Coruscanti are Brits.

Spacers are American/Latin.

Chiss are anything as long as it's a very elegant example.

Jessica Chastain as Mara Jade surely?

Jessica Chastain as Mara Jade surely?

Considered it, quite a bit actually.

But while she's close, and comes with red hair, I think the personality is just a little off from the once-evil Jade.

Interstellar, and the Martian were great for proving her for sci-fi, but she always seemed a little too kind underneath.

I figured Kate Beckinsale mostly because of her performances in Underworld and Total Recall; she has experience playing darker characters, and the indomitable kill-machine really fit in with my idea of The Emperor's Hand.

Could work, though you could cast Oldman as pretty much anyone, man's a bloody chameleon (I'd take him as Thrawn over Blunderbuss Chloroform any day, for example).

THANK you.

Kelsey Sanders for Mara, maybe?

TFA-beard Hamill as C'baoth, he's so much more fun with villains.

My first thoughts on the trailer.

My biggest take away from this trailer :

It's rather telling that the events of the Original Trilogy — Episodes VI, V and VI — have themselves become somewhat mythologized in the Star Wars universe.

There were stories about what happened ,” says Rey in a voiceover.

It’s true. All of it. The Dark Side. The Jedi. They’re real ,” responds Han Solo.

I dig it.

Despite what the Rebels would have non human species, and the far flung planets of the Outer Rim believe, The Empire did bring about stability and indeed prosperity to the Core and Inner Regions of the Galaxy.

Many a Core world did believe the Rebellion were a band of disruptive terrorists.

Perhaps with the fall of Emperor Palpatine, with no clear line of succession (as he very well intended), as in the Expanded Universe, in The Force Awakens , the Galaxy as a whole degraded and large pockets were plunged into the Star Wars version of the Dark Ages.

With no strong central government, petty planet wide conflicts and generations of extra species hatred were no longer kept in check. Hotbeds of turmoil that were once squashed by the Imperial Military now runs rampant, and swaths of the Galaxy fractures into something akin to our own world's history. Continued warfare between a multitude of factions only reinforces this spiral.

Perhaps that was The Emperor's parting gift. If he and his New Order would "save" the Galaxy, then let it all burn.

My two standard Galactic credits.

I'm rooting for the Space Kurds, then.

Let's count Resistances.

Listen carefully, I will say zis only once.

I f___ing hate guard dogs!

AWFUL Mara choices, but she's tricky to cast.

Danny Trejo for Karrde.

I kind of feel like the actress to portray Mara Jade should probably be of an age with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, et al.

Although considering how aging works for actresses in Hollywood... Famke Janssen?

I was vaguely under the impression that we were casting HotE, not a Disney-canon film.

Could maaaaaybe see it, so far I've been trying to match face structures with character art.

I thought it was a good, but not quite great trailer. "Probably" the best of the 3 they've had though. But not nearly as good as most if not all of the prequel trailers. Those were really well done and really got me excited to see the movies.

I think what hurts this trailer the most is lack of dialogue and plot. Granted I know the plot pretty well from spoilers, but still would be nice see some of it for real.

The biggest thing hurting this movie for me right now is the lack of creativity. It's all the same ships, vehicles, locations, etc as the OT, just slightly different so they can say it's not technically the same. I think they are running the nostalgia train a bit too hard personally.

The Star Wars: Uprising mobile game is basically conveying the gist of what goes on in the Hoth region after the Emperor dies. The Empire is still suppressing all knowledge of this, but the local rabble are busy fighting the Imperials. The Rebellion is part of the popular uprising, but mostly they are your typical scum & villainy wanting to trade in their illegal goods. The Rebellion is still very much a movement and in no way a government. Haven't read Aftermath etc., but I expect a very balkanised and chaotic Galaxy by 40 years after Episode IV.

If the ruler of a totalitarian regime dies, but the main hierarchy remains intact a few things can happen:
1- A successor has already been appointed in case something like that would happen and nothing major will happen (North Korea/USSR)

2- The remaining hierarchy is able to appoint a new ruler and nothing major will happen (USSR)

3- The remaining hierarchy is unable to appoint a new ruler and a conflict ensues by the main rivals. Regime crumbles into a several factions (Balkan), but during the next x years the strongest will overtake the smaller ones fairly quick, until 2 or 3 factions remain. (Syria/Afghanistan for instance)

4- Partial collapse of the system (Rome), creating a vacuum, but due to circumstances no faction is able to fill that vacuum: each star system to it's own

So right after the battle of Yavin, I would expect either nr 2 or 3 to happen.

he Emperor didn't anticipate defeat, and his Successor died as well, so that rules out option 1.

The Empire had a strong hierarchy-system and that kinda rules out option nr 4.

I don't know if the Empire had any more key-military leaders like Tarkin (who died in IV), but I expect there would be several admirals that have enough reputation to have their troops remain loyal. It kinda depends wether they are sensible enough to elect/support 1 specific leader or that several claim 'the throne'.

most likely, I expect scenario 3: Empire crumbles in several factions (each Executor class SD + subordinate fleet), warring each other, yet through alliances or superiority the First Order emerges as the main faction.
The First Order might have lost 20-40% of the influence the Empire had, but I think it's pretty realistic to believe that they still control the majority of starsystems, especially since the Rebel Alliance seemed to be quite small and less organized.

Good comments. Since this movie has been determined to be the first of a trilogy and the springboard for 2+ separate stand-alone movies, they may be sticking tightly to the 'nostalgia' perspective to connect into the best of the previous movies, to show-off their ability to get the look & feel right, and then get into the advancement/development of plot and new characters.

Here's hoping the new team has a large scale vision for this project.

I don't see how this movie is a springboard for the Anthologies, since they are all prequels to the OT. And I get the feeling that the Anthologies are going to have a bit more freedom than the Trilogies.

Some of these picks are awful casting lol I like the people as people (Beckinsale for instance), but I really don't rate them.

Also people keep picking crazy young choices for Mara Jade. Like one choice was 25. I'm 26 and I'm too young (and male lol) to play Mara Jade.

Are we just not having her be Luke's wife/ex/the ex Emperor's Hand in our casting?

I'm not entirely sure why Emilia Clarke seems to keep coming up in casting options. She is a terrible actor.

Because GOT is still hot.

Not nearly enough. She's pretty, but sexiest alive?

There's many that are considerably hotter.

Good question. What galactic year are we asking to see her portrayed? (I'm sure Mara Jade was 25 for a whole year.....)

The Thrawn Trilogy (when we she appears) occurs in approximately 9 ABY - she is then 26 years old.

Luke was born 19 BBY and Mara in 17 BBY. They got married in 19 ABY (she is 35).

And if 'The Force Awakens' is in 34 ABY, she is 53 at that point (corrected).

So what age do want our actress to portray?

I think your maths are a little off. Going by your ages and years born, if she's 35 in 19ABY and TFA is set in 34ABY, she'd be 50 (15 years between)

Hence my pick for Julianne Moore if we're making her the same age (about) Luke and having them be married/ex's.

If Disney wanted to start fresh with her and just use the character's name/style and not her history, then Jessica Chastain would get my vote. Or Karen Gillen for slightly younger.

The more I try to revisit the Thrawn Trilogy the less it seems. I've never liked Mara Jade, I've never liked the Clone Luuke storyline, and the fact that Lando is once again in some obscure mining colony despite being the kind of person who would jump at the chance to be a big wig in the New Republic beurocracy. Thrawn was a nice change for a villian, Imperial but alien, calculating but not Dark Side. Schemes that relied on using conventional and sometimes forgotten tech without needing super weapons.

Other than that though, I thought a lot of the Main Three characterization was a bit off.

I'm not sure that a fanatic Empire sect pursuing the purity of a galaxy under 'what Darth Vader started' meshes with the personality of a Star Wars story, but it's clear the First Order will be fierce in its intent. I hope the movie reaches beyond what the moviemakers are attempting. Thems make the best movies. I wonder if achieving that is a skilled art or just luck...

Because when it's a pattern that is just repeated, it comes off as a cheap way to make people think a movie is good when it really isn't.

You have got to be kidding.. I question anyone who thinks the prequel trailers were better.

They were loud, abrasive and flashy. Not 1 drop of the essence that is star wars.

TFA trailers are dripping in star wars lore.

Opinion or not, I'm shocked by this post in every regard. And vehemently disagree.

No creativity..? Just... wow...

I've never liked the Clone Luuke storyline

Storyline?

He's in, like, 2 chapters at the end of the third book. Darth Maul had more of a storyline in TPM.

The best thing the EU ever produced.
