Not that it doesn't mean that there can't be some overlap - as I personally hope that (as I have mentioned elsewhere) that Knights of the Old Republic, Knights of the Old Republic II, and The Old Republic (and related media) will turn out to be an in-universe The Lord of the Rings (a modern, fabricated mythology) or perhaps like the Norse gods and Greek gods and Camelot and the knights of King Arthur (ancient mythology, except perhaps a more universal, galaxy-spanning mythology) - such that everyone in the Star Wars universe knows who Darth Revan is, just as everyone knows who Amaterasu, Oðin, Uther Pendragon, and Gandalf are.

I liked the one rumor that I heard.
That Starkiller Base is a fake super weapon. It's a trap.

Ah, ah..! BUT..! KOTFE is POST Disney Acquisition..!
It is a distinct possibility.

As much as I also like that, it's unlikely. We've seen a giant red beam firing already.
It's also possible that the First Order is trying to get the thing fully operational and the storyline is centered around the bad guys competing the weapon instead of the good guys trying to blow it up. That red blast we see might be a low powered shot that only can take out capital ships or fleets of ships, and they need to fix the weapon to actually 'kill stars'.
The base might not even be destroyed by the end of this movie.
Edited by GrimmyVI'm actually reasonably convinced that it won't be introduced and destroyed in one film.

Given that the movie will supposedly use flashbacks and given that the red glowy boom followed a scene of Kylo Ren using the force to torture Poe Dameron... maybe Poe is from Alderaan and maybe Poe has nightmares about the destruction of his homeworld and the flashback will be a nightmare where he sees his parents die as Alderaan is destroyed.
Poe isn't from Alderaan. Fairly certain that would've been mentioned if either of his parents were from there in the Shattered Empire comic.

Haven't read it. Wasn't really aware of it, either, as I'm not much of a consumer of comics/"graphic novels".
Is it any good?

That isn't possible.
Poe's parents fought The Empire at Endor.
That is an awesome idea, and makes sense that the First Order is only now making a move to conquer the Galaxy.
The other possibility is that it's just another Palpatine commission. And it just took an extra 30 years to complete cause...you know...it's a planet.

Without the Empire to support them, I'm pretty sure they would have run out of money about 29 years ago and resources about 30 years ago. And if the current theory that the galaxy is locked in a cold war between the New Republic and the remains of Sidious's Empire is true, I doubt that the Empire could spare the coin to construct it while launching ploys and counter-ploys against and to defend from the New Republic and the Hutts.
Edited by VigilExactly. This project would have bankrupted even The Galactic Empire.

Actually, a cold war would allow for MORE money to be spent on such projects as this, because without continuous open conflict, you don't have to spends as much money on traditional military hardware.
Instead of spending money on more tanks and ships and jet fighters, they're spending more money on their nukes. Death Stars and Starkiller Bases are Star Wars' nukes.
Exactly. This project would have bankrupted even The Galactic Empire.
If the Empire's budget allows for the construction of a Death Star in 5 years, it can budget something like this in 30.
Edited by DarthEnderXI dunno' man. Last I heard, The Death Star, new fleet, and second Death Star were REALLY ridiculously expensive for The Empire...

So why is it an ice planet on the outside? Because they decided to add a bunch of water to it?
For the New Republic's intelligence services, it would not be difficult to calculate how much the Empire's government is taking in in revenue. It would not be difficult to calculate how much the Empire is expending on palaces, monuments, Star Destroyers, and Stormtroopers. It would not, therefore, take long for the New Republic's intelligence service to conclude that the Empire is expending a huge amount of money and matériel that is not directly related to any known military project or public works project. This would, in turn, trigger two things: A massive military build-up and mobilization by the New Republic, fearing that the Empire is secretly constructing either a new superweapon or a massive war fleet, and a desperate search by the entirety of the New Republic's intelligence services to find out what it is that the Empire is expending so many resources on.
These two acts would have far-reaching consequences: The New Republic would begin a massive mobilization of troops, a huge surge in monies appropriated for developing new weapons and new technologies, possibly even "lite" versions of superweapons. New Republic intelligence services would likely uncover the position of virtually every Imperial fleet in existence and be tracking as many individual Imperial ships as possible giving the New Republic an unprecedented depth of knowledge of Imperial fleet movements and maneuvers. The Empire would be unable to match the New Republic's spending on its conventional military forces, leaving Imperial forces badly outnumbered and threatened and the Empire's influence in the galaxy is gradually winnowed away.
Ultimately, this would result in one of two outcomes, either of which would have been resolved long before the "present day": Either the New Republic find the superweapon, realizes that it will take decades to complete, and launches an enormous strike force to destroy it, while other, smaller forces launch diversionary assaults deep into Imperial space while reminding Imperial diplomats that development of such weapons is a violation of the armistice and an act of war, and ultimately the Empire's size is greatly reduced, their superweapon destroyed or damaged beyond repair, their military morale plummets to levels not seen since the aftermath of the Battles of Endor and Yavin. Or the gradually demoralized Imperials go weapons hot on an overt New Republic reconnaissance patrol which becomes a skirmish, then a battle, then a war, which results in the massive New Republic armed forces dismantling or destroying most of the Imperial fleet, thanks to the information they have on most of the Imperial fleet. With none of the New Republic's military forces diverted to destroy the as yet unknown superweapon, Imperial losses are heavier, New Republic losses are lighter, and the Empire is either crushed or reduced to a tiny husk that has a barely functioning military and a superweapon they can now never afford to complete, let alone use.
So, yeah, I don't buy the Empire building it. But similarly implausible things have happened in the Star Wars universe. We'll find out in a couple months, though.
So why is it an ice planet on the outside? Because they decided to add a bunch of water to it?
I'm assuming they dug the base into the planet, not built the entire planet.

Thanks for all the fanfiction...
Vigil, you give the newly established government- in only some sectors of space mind you, far too much credit.
Also, far too much real world logic.

Applying that which works in the small scale, to that which could never work in the grand scale.
If the new republic did find out the imperial remnant was building a super weapon, threatening a theoretical armistice, and it would take decades to build, then it's in the NR's best interest to let he empire almost complete it, then go in and blow it up, ensuring the empire had wasted all that time and resources instead of building up their main fleet and army. And that's just one scenario.
I really hope it's something like a long forgotten weapon from a long forgotten pre-republic empire. Then it wouldn't be so much of a rehash of ANH, like ROTJ and TPM were.

Unless the New Republic is planning on mounting, say, a superlaser to a large starship, maybe the size of a small moon, it seems to me that it would be rather difficult to destroy if they let construction get too far.

Sabotage is a wonderful thing sometimes.
And with the proper intelligence the construction wouldn't get 'too far', especially with some well time 'critical failures' setting back construction for years or even decades. If done properly the NR will make the Empire waste so much on the boondoggle of a super weapon that they will have no choice but to abandon it and put its resources back into conventional military build up.
