Movement dial upgrade kit picture.

By Kanan, in X-Wing

I'm curious. Will we need one for every dial we currently own or will they allow popping our existing dials in and out?

I don't think these come with the cardboard portion. You'll pop out your existing dials and add into these upgrade kits.

Yeah, no dial has an X-Wing symbol like that on it. That's part of the upgrade kit.

Cheers. Hadn't seen that post.

For me at least it would come down to the amount of dials / ship icons you get for that price. I'd be thinking 4 - 5 but with possibly a limit on the number of ship id tokens, so you may get that many plastic dials but only a couple of each ship icon forcing some to need multiple packs.

For everyone complaining about how to disassemble their dials - use a thin knife. Insert the tip of the blade, sharp-side facing away from the center of the dial, under the cap. Lightly shimmy it all the way through using an easy rocking motion. Once you can see air underneath the cap, continue rocking the blade while rotating it so that you evenly pry up the cap all the way around.

It's like removing a headset crown race off a bicycle fork.*

*If you've ever done that before.

I didn't think they came with the existing cardboard.

I was curious as to how well the plastic held up inserting and removing dials from them. Do I need 1 for each ship or only enough for each side and insert the proper cardboard? Then when done take them out.

The sales sheet said 3, IIRC.

Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding. The very similar Armada dials, I don't feel very comfortable taking those apart and putting back together when I've tried it but there's also no reason to. It seems like it would work okay, though.

I imagine FFG is preferring you get one for each dial.

The way that pointer looks, it sure seems you will use your thumb to rotate it, which means that your thumb will point roughly at your maneuver when selecting it. Hey, look at that, when his thumb pointed toward that cutout portion, he did a 4K.

For those who don't realize it, this design is quite obviously based on the command dials used in SW Armada, just blinded up with the faction decorations. With this design the only part that moves is the actual cardboard piece that has all the maneuvers on it. You spin the cardboard just like normal until the desired maneuver is framed in the little "U" indicator spot.

The ship ID icons are still bothering me. They obviously have to come with these, but then what happens with new ships going forward? Does every expansion from now on have to come with a ship ID sticker or bit of card or something?

Oooh, boy. These look pretty nice, but I'm just not sure if it's worth it to get 3 for $10. That's $30 to fly your choice of swarm. I think I'll just get the bases and pass on these for now, but they look fantastic, and I might upgrade all my dials in a year or two (if these are available then).

I just looked at an Armada dial, it's fairly easy to take apart and it doesn't seem like it would suffer too much from wear.

That's a good point. I was just planning on putting numbers there that match the tombstone I put on the ship. That'll make it easier to just buy a few sets that I use for tournament squads and swap as needed.

It's possible that new ships might come with plastic dials going forward... but I think the ID token might be more likely.

Why are we acting like these are real?

Has there been ANY official source of information?

They would be cool, I'm sure I would get some, but this looks more like someone's Wave 10 Predictions (except for Accessories, of course) rather than actual product shots...

Why are we acting like these are real?

Oh, the fact that these are clearly based on a piece from SW Armada, but not just "the armada bit with a dial stuck in" lends credence as well, as does FFG also releasing colored bases soon.

Well, FFG won't give us any news to talk about, might as well talk about this.

Because a week ago someone claimed that their store distributor was talking about these and there was a lot of discussion, and now a week later a (presumably) second source has found additional evidence. At this point it kinda has to be either an elaborate hoax (and why would you hoax THIS?) or it's real.

Good point. If it was just a hoax, they likely wouldn't show molding for the faction symbols.

I hope so, I have a bunch of ships and I don't think I going to get enough for all of them. That would be quite costly. But if that come apart easily enough that would be great.

How many do you think per side for Epic?

Neat! I missed that, thanks.

How many do you think per side for Epic?

I believe all factions now have a 12 point and a 15 point ship, so that means currently it would be no more than 22 dials (10 of the 12s and 12 of the 15s gets you exactly 300).

So, 8 packs per faction, yes?

~$240. Yeah, that seems alright. ...

I think you are missing something about how these work. None of the plastic parts move. The cardboard disk in side the shell is what moves.

I think the cardboard rotates within the plastic housing while the pointer always points toward the open space. The command dials in Armada have a similar style.

Got it, thanks for clarifying. Not familiar with Armada, in fact I avoid it like the plague.

Still, it will be quite clear if you rotate your dial to orient it as the ship is oriented, which is revealing something. People don't often do this for straights or Ks, but only when turning. So you'll either have to get in the habit of doing so for all maneuvers, or just stick with the cardboard.

To be fair, if you're serious about Epic, you're spending a lot on this game already. 12 TIEs are probably the easiest to acquire, though, especially once the Gozanti drops.

Fair enough. But it seems a lot easier to spend $240 on ships than on dials. Different strokes for different folks.

I really like these and so whether I buy them depends on the price.

I certainly don't want to be messing about swapping dials in and out of them. Surely that'll just cause more wear than it actually saves. However if they're reasonably priced enough for me to buy one for every ship I own then I'll definitely buy into this.

Going forward it'll just be a small extra expense to consider when buying new expansions very much like card sleeves and foam are now.
