questions?

By Facepalm2, in Runewars

i have a few questions that i was wondering about;

-is the game just war, or is it more deep then that (ei. resources, building, etc.)

-how long is the game, roughly

-are the players automatically on a team if they are both playing as good and vice versa

Well, it's at least got questing elements. And considering some of FFGs other war-based games (TI3 and Starcraft, to name two) have resource management and infrastructure building as integral parts of the game, I would imagine Runewars will also :)

thank you for clearing this up, i read the page about it and i just was not quite sure

A lot of the details are still unclear, but this game has been compared to Twilight Imperium in a fantasy setting. Given that, I think we can expect a certain amount of resource management and equipment upgrading, etc. There will definitely be quests to complete and probably armies to build, if the cover picture is any indication. Needless to say, I'm very excited about this game.

I doubt there will be official "teams" that players will be forced to adhere to. That's not FFG's style. Players may well be able to team up if they choose, but I don't think they'll be forced to just because "we're both good guys."

Play time hasn't been announced as far as I know, but I'm expecting it to be several hours minimum, in keeping with other big box games they've made.

This game actually sounds like a re-make of an old Fantasy Flight Game called BattleMist (its got the link to it on BBG http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/25 )

I would read up on BattleMist. Personally I hope it is a remake. I always though BattleMist was a neat concept, and hopefully it will do well with modern rules.

You assume the right thing (and reading the announcement for Runewars will tell you the same)

If it plays anything like Battlemist (feel free to read the rules in another thread) you will get everything you love in your 4 X Games.

Explore (Sending Heroes to Complete Quests to gain Powerful Artefacts or Dragonrunes)

Expand (Area Control (for better Exploitation and Dragon Runes) and Army Building)

Exploit (Gather Resources, Build up your Towns and Citys)

Exterminate (Wage war against your neighbours, and gain Dragon Runes)

As always Diplomacy in multiplayer matches (2 to 4 player) is part of the Metagame. (and Poltics part of the Main Game (at least it was in Battlemist (and Twilight Imperium)))

If you thought mhmmm Twilight Imperium with more direct confrontation (and faster gameplay): This will be for you.

If you thought mhmmm Starcraft with a neat Fantasy Setting and refined and deeper Gameplay: This will be for you.

If you thought mhmmm [Enter Warrior Knights/Game of Thrones/Warcraft/etc] yaddayaddayada: This will be for you.

If you thought mhmmm Fantasy Flight Games produced another Big Box Sized Game for 100$ : at least check it out

I liked the simpler TI2 rules better than the TI3 monster :) It was about exploring and combat and rather easy playable in some hours. TI3 is not much of an fun improvement for our group. I hope this overcomplex fun killing is not the case with this new edition of Battlemist too. Old BM was great as it was. Only plastic troopers have been missing.

I would wish from the new edition:

-simple rules (not such complex like TI3)

-great plastic minis

-fun and fast combat system

-world building and exploring ala Mighty Empires and old Battlemist

-an add-on in some months with the name: "Runesails of War"

Yeah, I read the announcment page AFTER reading and posting to the forums. I simply read the product page and then jumped right into the forums. Ah..well, I am glad that my feeling was correct.

Depends on what you mean by "blinging out games". Sure, most of their games don't have pre-painted minis, but almsot every FFG game (especially the big-box ones) tend to have TONS and TONS of components - you definitely get your money's worth out of it.

I think your sarcasm detector is broken.

Very possible. My sarcasm-o-meter has never worked properly, especially in online conversations gran_risa.gif

Aloha - yes it was sarcasm - when I first opened Descent, my wife asked if I recieved a box of porno's as I was speechless, then it was followed by a huge kick ass yell proclaiming, "Where were you when I was 12", and then I finally said I needed to be alone... happy.gif

Oh, how I know that feeling! That's always the case with my hobbies. I would have loved to have that stuff as a kid. Not even to play with it as it is supposed to, but simply HAVING it. I played hours over Risk pushing armies around and conquering empires. Had I had those games back then...! Same with the LARP equipment. I mean, NERF Guns and foam swords...woah, that would have been hell of a childhood! :D

However, there are team rules for Starcraft (not that they are really needed, as the game is very well suited for teamplay. Would playing in team be a possibility there (it doesn't work so well with other games like Game of Thrones, or Twilight Imperium, as the clash of kings or political phases do not work well with players not playing for themselves)?

Possibility definitely. But I really hope it's no intended team game.

I don't think that question can be properly answered until the rulebook gets posted for us to read. I'm sure teaming up will be possible, but I sincerely doubt it will be required. Whether or not it's a good idea depends on the detailed mechanics of the game.
