Barrel Roll...forward or backwards?

By Ccwebb, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I am watching a lot of youtube videos of this game and have seen some forward or backwards barrel rolls. This confuses me because the rule book stats place the 1 template on the left or right side.

...now that I think about it more, I am seeing the forward or backwards rolls with the Yt-2400. Is this a special rule for it?

The YT-2400 can move pretty far forward or back but still with a side barrel roll.

If you are seeing them literally put the 1-forward template at the front or behind the ship and roll, that's their own (wrong) thing :P Maybe a house rule, but probably just them getting it wrong.

You can boost forward, but it has to go in the normal front guides of the ship. No maneuver/action so far lets you put a template at the back of your base and move the ship.

Link to the vids?

when you barrel roll you can put the template anywhere on the side you are barrel rolling on as long as it doesn't overhang, doing this you can end up going forward or back but still barrel rolling

When you put the template on the side of the ship's base you can gain some small measure of forward or backward movement, roughly around half of the base's length (give or take). It doesn't have to be a completely parallel roll to the side. But using the front or rear of the base is completely wrong, as InterceptorMad said.

I'd also like to see a link to these vids.

Are you sure they were doing a barrel roll and not a Boost?

Have you looked at the Barrel Roll example of page 10 of the new Learn to Play book, or page 8 of the old rulebook? This shows the ships moving as far forward as they're allowed to. You can also go back to the same degree. The only difference with the YT-2400 and ANY ship on a large base that can barrel roll, is the template is placed with the long edge alongside the base instead of the short edge.

Check the top of the page on this link for reference.

I'm guessing he's confused about which side of the YT-2400 is the front.

I will find the vids...

Ok... it is defiantly dealing with YT-2400.

These two different videos show the YT-2400 doing a funny barrel roll. Granted it is to the side, but they seem to be measuring the roll with the skinny part of the 1 template.

Nothing funny about that. Large Base ships barrel role by aligning the long edge of the 1 template with the Base.

This was originally changed in the FAQ when the yt 2400 came out.

It was in a few earlier editions of the FAQ, just after the YT-2400 came out as StephenEsven said, but it's been cut from the FAQ for a while now. Something I think they should have left in there, but they've put it into the new Rules Ref on page 13 under Large Ships, so it's still covered.

On the official FFG site. Go tot the x-wing page, and then at the bottom you have all the links to the PDFs of the rules and FAQs and such.

Thank you both for the clear explanation. However that leads to a frustration, I have recently began playing this game. (a month ago). Is the rule book that came with the basic core set invalid? I cannot find anything about large ships in it.

Here is a link to the rule book that I have, found it online. https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/support/SWX01_XwingCoreRulebook_lowres.pdf

Where can I find the new rules?

Go here: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/x-wing/

Scroll down to "Support"

Download all the PDFs, and keep them on your mobile if you don't play at home all the time, and/or don't want to print them out.

Profit.

Edit: The Learn to Play (LTP) and Rules Reference Guide (RRG) are from the new Force Awakens core set. These replace the rules from the Original Core set. There's not much difference between the original and TFA rules, just a few subtle changes that you'd need to know if you're going to play outside your own family/friends.

The original rule book did not include anything about Large Ships because at that time there were no large ships. Large ships came with the Large Ship rules and those were later incorporated in the FAQs. Now that there's a new rule book for the new core set those Large Ship rules have been rolled into it.

Found it! Thank you very much. Other cards make sense now too! (Modification, title, large ship...etc)

Modifications and titles were added after the original core set as well. Wave II, I think, when the Falcon and Slave I were released. Have a careful read and all shall become clear, young padawan.

To actually answer your question,

FFG came out with a new core set, with a new rulebook, about a month ago. The X-Wing logo on the new core set is blue instead of red. The new rulebook doesn't change a whole lot, but it does clarify a lot of confusing areas and adds in all the extra rules that have been added since the game came out.
