Spoiler from Lost Stars

By Stinger07, in X-Wing

So, I just finished the new novel, Lost Stars. I'll admit it was pretty good, definitely enjoyable.

Anyways, in the last few pages it mentions that empire was upgrading all of their TIEs with new weapons that could ignore deflector shields, bringing TIEs on par with rebellion fighters.

Has anyone else heard about this? This is pretty big...

Well the Tie/FO in XWMG certainly doesn't reflect that. Gameplay balance perhaps?

The Special Forces TIE might.

If it did it'd be worth taking over the classic.

Maybe TIEs get torp slots, canon being they carry Plasma Torpedoes.

The rebels probably upgraded their shields so they were immune to imperial jiggarypokery anyway...

ignoring shields outside of the incredibly situational Adv-Homing would break the game

shields are 50%+ of certain ships' health

There is that fancy tech slot...

Spend a target lock, ignore shields on primary. 4-5 ppint tech upgrade. Or reduce primary attack dice by one, but shields ignored.

still broken

there's no 4-5 point upgrade that can inflict 50% damage without being some sort of one-shot ordnance

plasmas really are, imo, the way to handle shield ignoring weaponry. They're powerful on their own to avoid being too situational; extra effective against heavy shields

Honestly though not having read lost stars what exactly does it say?

Effective vs ray shields? particle shields? all shields.

and again... Do the rebels just upgrade their shields to defend against this?

Okay, so let's see, quote:

"He strode between the long lines of TIE Fighters, all of which were being refitted with stronger weapons of new design. These would be able to punch through energy shields and starfighter hulls with a single blast, which mean the one advantage starfighters had over TIEs, their shielding, would vanish."

They use the term "Starfighter" to mean any rebel starfighter.

What kind of Star Trek crap just invaded Star Wars? There's no way to simply ignore shields. Period. Shield tech has been around for thousands of years, all the countermeasures for bypassing shielding craft would have been devised long ago. There's no 'matching frequencies' or 'modulating shields' BS.

The only way I can see upgraded weapons 'ignoring' shields is to basically put out ally more firepower than necessary and to overwhelm the shields in one shot, basically cranking the attack dice to 5 (or 11 for you Spinal Tap fans).

TIEs aren't starfighters, confirmation that they are walkers without legs!

So basically they have FP4, not 2.

Maybe it would be something like "Multiply your number of hits by two (to a maximum of 4)"

ignoring shields outside of the incredibly situational Adv-Homing would break the game

shields are 50%+ of certain ships' health

If your a rebel...what was the issue bypassing shields again?

Maybe something like: If your attack hits, you may cancel all die and deal one face-down damage card.

Ok, that quote doesn't really say anything about ignoring shields, or bypassing shields, it just says the new weapons are much more powerful and can deliver so much damage they can one shot basically any fighter.

By that logic, no new technologies could ever be created in Star Wars.

Exactly. It's not Star Trek, it's not science fiction. It's fantasy, all the conflict comes from character interaction concerning politics, religion, ethics and morality, and philosophy. The technology of Star Wars is all about being 'transparent' to the story. The only time'new' technology enters the story is in the form of super weapons and that's just a difference in scale.

There's no teleporting or stargates and I don't want them!

Still, I'd like to see a really cool Stormtrooper helmet HUD. That should be a thing, especially as we learned clonecommando's / troopers had them.

Right. There's no new technologies except the ones that the entire plots the original trilogy revolve around.

It's all about those politics, ethics and philosophy! Like in those prequels everyone loves so much.

What was new about the Death Star that wasn't related to old tech that was scaled up?

Even the PT shows it to be the product of he clone wars era, with 'converging lasers' to be standard weapons on troop transports.

By that logic, lasers that punch through shields are still lasers. It's old tech.

look up rebel assault 2
