Ok great, he has a crappy broadsword lightsaber(old news), much, much, much more importantly, like the OP said, where is Luke Skywalker?! If somehow Jar Jar Abrams has made the main character from the OT, the character that whose journey the story revolves around into some sort of minor background character, that doesn't warrant inclusion onto the theatrical poster, this movie is going to suck even harder than I thought it was going to! I can forgive the apparent killing off of Han and Leais happy ending, and the main character being Finn Solo(my current theory based on JJ not releasing last names and Marvel writing Han a pre Yavin black wife so Finn is his grandson) but if you got rid of or in some way marginalized Luke "The Man" Skywalker, JJ, you are dead to me!

Maybe you can wait until the movie comes out before jumping to conclusions?

Nah. I've already jumped.
Marvel writing Han a pre Yavin black wife
this is at most an Our Mrs. Reynolds thing and at least an outright yandere fabrication on the character's part

Also, sometimes they want major things to be surprises
I know we're not used to that these days with films and TV, with trailers and synopses spoiling everything for us.
But this time, this time they've actually managed it. So Luke being absent from view so far HAS A REASON. It isn't just 'meh, we can leave him off'

Maybe, but I don't think so. I just think it could explain a black Solo
Here is a little tidbit for you. J.J. First off I've read that article forever ago and I think it would appear to make Luke a central character even more than before, or at least as much. And I have no prejudice, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Maybe this is the case, but in every other Star Wars poster, the main characters feature prominently.

let me just prefix an "If Disney's smart, " thing to that.
With jj it's pretty safe to assume the worst.
Transporting from earth to Qo'nos, in one fel stroke he made Starfleet redundant who needs space ships when you can teleport 112 light years instantly.
If you ask me, the prospect of somebody who's not force sensitive, using a lightsaber, is interesting. How often do we actually see that? It's rare, but it would be interesting.
In the original trilogy the propsabers were actually pretty heavy.
When you swung one it had a pretty decent amount of force behind it, which translated over to the blade having starnge air resistance or somesuch.
It's not like swinging a stick, or a sword for that matter. No weight to the blade, but much more momentum than one would expect, and no avoidable edge means you could very easily overswing. (And chop your arm off.)
As for the crossguard, if you are dueling (and with no more clone wars the Sith are pretty much just anti-Jedi HQ units) you want a crossguard.
Luke's hand in episode 5 - wouldn't happen if there was a guard, or at least not the same way.
Here, just look. (Fyi, half-swording doesn't work with lightsabers,
same with grabbing the blade, but not worrying about edge alignment should make up for it.)
^ Performed at about 50% speed; this is instructional, and they're not actively trying to kill their sparring partners. ![]()

... But if they were that close to Earth, how did the rest of starfleet not intervene?
Blegh. Now I'm going to be trying to remember how it went until I rewatch it, and Into Darkness was not worth a rewatch.
I'd need a better picture, but it looks like they've got another ridiculously impractical lightsabre.
And to put it to rest. (All credit to ScholaGladiatoria! )

Can't forget the convincing that Spielburg did. You know you are at the top of Hollywood when you can get Spielburg to do your arguing for you.

You sound prejudiced by your derogatory appelation of the director. Jar Jar Abrams as you put it. You are seeing him and his work in a negative light, prejudging the film. You say it is going to suck. So, unless you have seem more than anyone else, you ARE posting in a very prejudical slant.

U-uh no offense but why are you telling me this?
I know all of this.
I am a proponent of the Crossguard Lightsaber.
Hell I also enjoy the prequels. I'm not one of the curmudgeons.

He doesn't put it to rest, he grants that the crossguard can be chopped through by a weapon that is notorious for cutting through absolutely everything (and it's a likely thing for it to slide down there).
There are definitely things that could make it work, though they've yet to appear in canon sources. You could make the central part of the lightsabre out of something like cortosis or a some sort of energy shield built into the pommel of the weapon, but if you had either of those things why would you bother with a lightsabre crossguard?
The people who designed it just put it in there 'cuz they thought it'd be cool; they didn't think about the obvious implications.

Are we supposed to believe that a director who has consistently made mediocre films is suddenly going to make a good one?
Are we supposed to pretend he has no history?
Mostly just arguing the usefulness of the guard, not the how it works.
Heck, my grandma knows what cortosis is, it's not that hard to explain the metal bit away.

Uh, I really liked Trek '09. It's my #1 Favorite.
Aside from The Empire Strikes Back. That one has a special place above any and all ratings.

Sorry, the first three sentences were for you, not the whole sword-use bit. Didn't mean to curmudgeon-bludgeon you.
The "X-Guard LiteSabre® sux all the Deathstars, wood never work. #onlytraditionalsabers" comments get to me.
(Edit: And I flat out died in Star Trek 2009. First and last time ever I get a ship named after me and BOOM. First 5 minutes. )

Are we supposed to pretend his mediocre history is fact as opposed to opinion?
Pretty sure it's not a case of pretending (although there's an argument I've seen that places the blame with writers rather than Abrams), but let me argue that angle for a sec here:
Say I don't like any of his past movies. Is there then any precedent for me to like this one? Is there anything in the material we've seen that makes this somehow different than his previous movies?
Should anyone who dislikes his past movies waste time assuming this one will be different? I can tell you right now that enough people dislike, let's say, ST09, Into Darkness, Cloverfield, MI:3, etc that finding mediocrity precedent even if it's a case of opinion should still put a significant percentage of people into a camp that can look askance at this film and be right to do so.

Considering some of those films were hampered by Orci & Kurtzman, I would say he is able to make terrible movies at least mediocre. At least with the Trek movies, I think the issues are more on the writers than the director.
