Greetings, all.
Recently came home from a Tournament that was initially explained to me as a "Newbie" tournament. So, I was surprised when I walked in to people who had been playing since Day one and, suffice to say, I didn't destroy a single ship.
This was the list I was going in with, as I only had the X-Wing from the Red Starter Set and picked up the other 2 the night before it started.
X-Wing: Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, Marksmanship.
HWK-290: Kyle Katarn, Blaster Turret, Recon Specialist, Squad Leader.
B-Wing: Blue Squadron Pilot, 2x Proton Torpedoes, Fire-Control System, Ion Cannon.
My B-Wing kept getting wrecked in the fiest 2-3 rounds of combat, never getting a good hit off on anything, Kyle was tossing off wasted focus, and I tried to keep deploying Luke off near the other end of the table as a flanker, but always turning up 1-2 rounds too late and then getting focused down. I relied too much on a B-Wing that had Pilot Skill 2 and no defensive maneuvers, running head-first into the enemy with Kyle Range 1 tailing him.
SO! I came home and remade the list. I think it is a small improvement.
X-Wing: Rookie Pilot.
HWK-290: Kyle Katarn, Mouldy Crow, Recon Specialist, Blaster Turret.
B-Wing: Ten Numb, Swarm Tactics, Fire-Control System, Autoblaster, Adv. Proton Torpedoes, Proton Torpedoes.
This one gave alot more loving to the B-Wing, Kicking up to PS 8 from a measly 2. I originally went with Roark to give him 12 and Swarm Tactics to, at the start of Combat, have the Rookie and B-Wing at PS 12, but I felt that Focus was alot more imprtant for not only keeping the B-Wing safe, but for the Rookie/HWK aswell. In any case, I can still make the Rookie or Kyle PS8, which (I think) is good enough. And Taget Lock, Focus from Kyle to Adv. Proton makes a 5-Die Attack with 3 Blanks becoming eye which, in turn from Kyle's Focus, I am guaranteed atleast 3 hits if I roll 5 blanks, almost defiantly shooting first.
Problems I have with this though. The B-Wing's good weapons are Range 1, meaning it has to get VERY close and survive the incoming flak if it doesn't down it's target. Also, removing Kyle early severely dampens the sustained hammering from the B-Wing. Also, catching the Rookie off guard when I'm putting all my power into B-Wing can result in an easy target, but in many cases, I feel that the Rookie will be there to serve as a shield-poker/distraction/aanoyance.
If there are any improvements you think I could make, please do not hesitate!
Very New Player Looking For Help!
Mind me asking what expansions you have available to you?
Hello,
You're too heavily invested in 1-2 ships with (as you said) no defensive maneuvers. With the second list, Ten Numb is a whopping 50 points - half your list! And he's no more survivable than a blue squadron pilot, with 8 health and one agility, meaning he will only get to shoot once before probably dying a horrible death. (most lists will be able to kill him in one turn if they focus him - which they will because he's such a juicy target right now) Meaning all those bought upgrades would have been a waste. You could get two whole B-wings and then some for that many points.
Blaster turrets and autoblasters are not very good. For turrets, ion cannon turrets or twin laser turrets are better. As for cannons, generally only mangler cannons or heavy laser cannons are typically used. Ten Numb in particular really likes the mangler cannon (read his pilot ability, and then the mangler cannon's ability).
X-Wing: · Biggs Darklighter (25)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
· R2-D2 (4)
B-Wing: Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Ion Cannon (3)
Fire Control System (2)
HWK-290: · Kyle Katarn (21)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Recon Specialist (3)
· Moldy Crow (3)
Biggs takes all the fire coming at him as long as he can... Use HWK to pass focus to Biggs...The B wing and HWK can ion when needed...R2 D2 to keep Biggs alive a little longer....Fly as a group...if I where you I would lay out your playing area and give the group a fly around..are you staying with just rebels
Edited by Dobougob352If I'm reading you correctly, and you only have the ships and upgrades from the original core, HWK, and B-Wing expansions, something along the following lines may be your best bet:
With only the Core, HWK, and B-Wing expansions to work with, I'd recommend:
Ten Numb (36)
B-Wing (31), Fire-Control System (2), Marksmanship (3)
Luke Skywalker (32)
X-Wing (28), R2-D2 (4)
Kyle Katarn (32)
HWK-290 (21), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Recon Specialist (3), Moldy Crow (3)
That gives you two PS 8s; R2D2 synergizes well with Luke, and Marksmanship gives you some good synergy with Ten's pilot ability. Use Kyle to pass Focus tokens to Ten and Luke while they take target locks and Ten takes Marksmanship. Use the HWK's ion cannon turret to set up a predictable location for shooting a target.
Skip the ordnance for now; it's rarely worth it with the few items you have.

You might be packing too much bang for low agility ships or very little ships. Their hit point/upgrade cost is kind of off the balance, but that is not the most important thing to consider when you just want to play fun games and try out cool stuff out! But I just wanted to point that out!
Enjoy you new hobby! ![]()
I know you don't have the Z-95 or Xwing expansions but one list I liked was
Hwk 290. - Roark Garnet and Jan Ors crew
Garven Dreis
Airen Craken w/ swarm tactics
Biggs w/ R2F2 and shield upgrade
Biggs uses R2F2 as action Roark passes PS12 onto Airen who passes PS12 to Garven. Airen shoots and gives Biggs a free action which can be a focus, Garven passes a second focus to Biggs which Jan Ors converts to an evade. Now Biggs is armed with an extra agility for the round, an evade and focus token for all the shots coming his way
