Working on a Rebel ion-y build

By FlightyBombJack, in X-Wing Squad Lists

But it is still really rough. Frankly in its current state I am not sure it'd be very competative. Maybe it would do better against the two ship fleets I have been seeing a lot at the game store I play at. Anyways here is what I got so far. Looking for ideas and general feedback.

Ten Numb (37 total)

Calculation

Ion Cannon

Fire Control Systems

Horton Salm (32 total)

Twin laser turret

R2 astro

Gray Squad Y-wing (26 total)

BTL-A4

Ion Turret

R2 Astro

That leaves us with 5 points left over.

The pros of the list are: decent amount of health, good ion potential, Horton can provide nice covering fire, hopefully helping with the bad turning these guys have.

Cons? Only three ships, crap agility, no real synergy. Swarms would wreck it, but that is just what happens with these things.

I could swap out the generic y-wing for Dutch, but at the same time that is still a 3 ship build and I dunno how well that would do. I could get different ships to replace the Y-wings, though I dunno what they'd be. With just Ten Numb I have 63 points to work with, I could throw in another ace ship or a group of A-wings or Z-95s, but I dunno if either of those would provide a ton of benefit other than just offering more dice to throw around.

I like the idea of Ten reliably landing ion shots, I am just not sure what to put with that. Comments, suggestions?

You could give Ten E2/Tactician and the Grey R3A2 instead of the generic R2, giving you two ships that can both Stress and Ion opponents at the same time. That leaves you with 1 point, though you could squeeze out another 2 by dropping the Grey to a Gold. Not sure what those 3 points can do for this list, especially since it might be worth having the PS4 pilot that can shoot before a lot of generics.

I would give Horton R5-P9. With his reroll ability he will be able to bank the focus for shields most of the time.

Jousting ion warthogs with bombs can also be fun.

A similar theme, that can work is 4 btla y wings (2 with tlt and 2 with ion)

it does alot of dmg on the first pass, is really beefy, and has nice control elements, its 99 points also gives you initative bids vs 4 tlt lists.

The 2nd list is also controly and based on jousting, very beefy and while it cant put out as much dmg on the first pass, you can really control the pase of the battle with all the stress//ion you will be asigening, and havee a bit more flexability in your movement.

Ill be testing these 2 lists over the next few days for a store championship even this weekend.

Oh tactician on the B-wing slipped my mind, that is a good idea...and the shield regen astromech on Horton. I will deffinitely be going that route with this I think. Horton will no doubt be a big target, so that should keep him alive longer... I still think Ten will get focused down pretty fast, but hopefully their attention will be split between the two aces long enough for some good damage and control stuff to happen. I will try running this version at the store this gameday I think.

Are we sure that the named pilots and all the upgrades are really doing that much for us here? So much of the above seems like a "just worse" take on the various versions of the Panic Attack archetype. Horton, in particular, feels like we're spending a lot of points for very limited benefit - how often do you actually miss with TLTs? I get that the meta is shaping up in such a way as to reward the PS bid over basic Blues and Goldies, but not sure that's doing enough for us here either. It definitely feels sexier to grind out advantages with abilities and upgrades, I admit that, but at the same time I feel like this type of list is really about having more HP and red dice than the other guy. Hence, having an extra ship does more for us in the long run.

Of course, I've been playing for less than a year at this point, and I know there are other players out there that are much more adept at riding aces' abilities to victory. Otherwise the Imperial 3-ship lists wouldn't be a thing. I'm not good enough to fly lists like that yet but maybe you guys are!

Well I am poor and I really don't have enough physical models to field a panic attack list or something simmilar. Heck I don't even have half the cards, I've never even used a TLT before but people have said it works well with Horton's special so I figured, what the heck. I even was trying to think of swapping out ships in the original post, but like I said I really wouldn't know what to put in. The only rebel ships I have are an A-wing, 2 X-wings, 2 Y-wings and a B-wing. I'd have to borrow stuff from other people, and doing that at a tournament is kinda awkward I guess, but someone let me borrow some cards there before so I am hoping I can at least do that.
