ALL things plastic

By thanosazlin, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Just wanted to start a discussion on the ship cards and the plastic base for the ships, as one thread contained this subject along with XI. I pasted any statement from the Rules Ref that included the word "plastic" below.

With the new FAQ release it states

Q: Which parts of a ship’s base block line of sight?
A: The ship’s entire plastic base blocks line of sight, excluding
the plastic portions that frame shield dials. The shield dials
also do not block or obstruct line of sight.
we have only been using the ship card if say a ship was between 2 ships for determining LOS and Obstruction. So now they are saying you count the entire plastic base of a ship in terms of Obstruction.
SO, in terms of Hull Zone range firing and measuring, now that i re-read 2. and 3. below, i think i am correct in that we measure range from one ship hull zone to another ship's hull zone by placing the range tool touching the firing ship's cardboard and ensure the range indicator on the tool touches or includes the other ship's defending hull zone cardboard. we totally ignore ANY and all plastic when measuring range. BUT for purposes of a ship obstructing the fire between 2 other ships we count all plastic on the obstructing ship.
LIST OF ALL THINGS PLASTIC FROM RULES REF:
1. When determining if a squadron or ship is outside the
play area, ignore the squadron’s activation slider and the
ship’s shield dials and the plastic portions of the base
that frame the shield dials.
2. A hull zone is a section of a ship token delineated by the
two firing arc lines that border it. It does not include ANY
part of the plastic base.
3.When measuring firing arc, range, or distance, ignore
squadrons’ activation sliders and ships’ shield dials and
the plastic portions of the base that frame the shield dial.
4. A ship’s shield dials and the plastic portions that frame
them count as part of the ship’s base for the purposes
of overlapping, but squadrons’ activation sliders are
ignored.
5. If any portion of a ship’s or squadron’s base is outside
the play area, that ship or squadron is destroyed. For this
purpose, ignore activation sliders, shield dials, and the
plastic portions of a ship’s base that frame shield dials.
6. Some plastic ship models extend beyond the plastic
base. For this reason, the plastic ship model does
not affect range measurement, firing arc, movement,
overlapping, or any other game mechanic.
7. If a squadron’s plastic fighters or activation slider impede
the movement or placement of other components,
rotate the squadron so that the fighters and slider do not
impede.

That is how I have been doing it.

Shmitty has stated that at GenCon they were told to go from the base.

Ok, so, if I have this right....

You measure to the plastic for "range".....but when measuring shots, you measure "range" from hull zone to hull zone, and that's ONLY deliniated by the CARD, not the plastic base.

So to see if I'm in range of, say, the minefields scenario effect, or within range to use an ability like Leia Organa's order shenanigans, or within medium range to issue a squadron command to my fighters, I would measure to the plastic BASE.

But when I am making an ATTACK, I do NOT measure from BASES, I measure from CARDS because that's where the HULL ZONE is, and attacks measure from HULL ZONE to target HULL ZONE, not plastic BASE, right?

Correct.

And the shield dial counts for overlapping obstacles and other ships, but not for the range of effects or to see if I go off the board.

I hate "it's this except when this" things. Make it count or don't.

It counts for going off the board after the initial move. It does not count for setup though.

Hmmm you are right. I might be confusing another rule. . . Hmmmmm
