By Kuk111, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi all just got into Armada and saw the great things people are doing modding there ships. I was inspired!

just got done with my first led attempt at 3am. excited to be done so here are some pics. more detailed breakdown to come.

thanks so much to jasonkc25's post for all the starting info i needed

Tiny tiny Drill bits for making holes for Fiber Optic

Fiber optic filament

ran the fiber under battery and bundled them to a LED - the Current LED is too Large, 5mm. Note how it butts up against engine assembly. Have a smaller LED on order 1.5mm that will fit and lay flush with lower hull, this will help my rear quarter optics as they are a little light starved at the moment.

Come to think of it.... I think firebire optics yields better results than the LEDs

I have the Optics, I just need the LED setups to get things started.

Pretty darn sweet man.

How well do you see the fiber in a normally lit room while playing? Looks really cool with the lights off, but I'm wondering how cool it really is in a normal play session?

Looks great though, really well done. Maybe after I finish painting fighters I'll give this a shot...

Impressive.

Most impressive.

How are you holding the fiber in the holes? Just friction, or were they glued in?

All of these lighted VSDs are always awesome... but not something I could ever do, because I don't like the idea of leaving my VSDs in two parts (even if magnetized).

The fiber optics look spectacular though! But has anyone lit the bridge tower?

Ken-Obi the optics actually read pretty well in normal light. The upper and lower hull sections make a natural shadow for the main hull area with overhead lights. the upper deck lights show pretty good also. will try and snag a pic in normal light tomorrow

Captain ITC the optic fiber was glued in on the backside.

Norse the bridge tower def left me stumped, i plan to do this on a second VSD so will try some ideas and then onto a ISD later perhaps the ISD has a tower that can support some solution.

So sexy, shame you couldn't light the bridge. Is it a single piece like the Gladiator?

take my money... thats gorgeous man. im jealous

That's awesome. What would it take to hire you to do that? I have a little understanding of lighting, but...

Eagerly awaiting the more detailed breakdown

I like it under the full light in the first picture. When it is too dark the fiber optics seem overly bright, but I imagine it has to be that way to make them show up under full lighting on a gaming table. The engines look spectacular.

Not knocking any of the other LED lit VSDs, but you have absolutely nailed the engine glow. Love the fiber optic windows. Just a glorious job.

Thank you all for the positive feedback :)

The engines I did using a suggestion on another thread. For the primary 3 cones I put a drop of hot glue in to make a raised bump. This helped pull the light up from the LED. Then I turned the ship vertical and used regular elmers glue to surround and lightly coat the hot glue bump. This gave the light a nice diffused look. The 4 secondary engines are just the elmers sitting in the cones

I agree, this is the best lighting job I have seen to date. outstanding.

Amazing work..

some questions:

a) is there an on/off switch ?

b) Both antennas were broken in the process or while playing ? :)

spectacular job!

Haha

Hi Solamnic,

Yes there is a on off switch built in. It is located forward of the battery.

As for the antenna i didn't know how frail they were and bumped them a few too many times soon after i got the piece totally on me. :) all thumbs

Haha I know what you mean :)

I have broken off many vsd antennas.

The new isd has no antennas :)

How much if this can I buy at Radio Shack?

How much did it cost to do it...I'm getting my nerve up to try it on one of my VSDs

The battery thing with switch was 5, optic fiber 2 bucks assorted light 5.... so 12 bucks plus hours and hours of your time
