Tournament Structure

By Tython, in General Discussion

Hello all,

Haven't played much of Fantasy Flight games prior to AGOT 2.0. I noticed stores are starting to sign up for events, can some break down what the calendar year normally looks like for Fantasy Flight games for me?

When do regional tournaments begin/end, is there only one season a year? How many are generally on the West Coast?

Event kits can be done at any store, so long as they order them, is this correct?

Other tournaments like Gencon?

Any help would be appreciate, for reference I played in a lot of AEG tournaments especially for L5R so if there are similarities folks could walk me through that helps.

Thanks!

I haven't played AGoT 1.0, but I can tell you from other FFG competitive games how their seasons work, since they are all on the same schedule.

First, is the Store Championship season. Which runs from the beginning of the year until end of March. During the Store Champion season, any number of stores can host a tournament. It is not unusual for every LFGS in your area to have their own tournament (hopefully they coordinate so that the dates don't overlap).

Second, is the Regional Championship season, which will run over the next three months. For Regionals, the US is divided into various regions, and a few Regionals will be schedule in that timeframe. When it comes to a Regional, you may get lucky and have one at your FLGS but that is not a guarantee.

Third, comes the National Championship. The US National Championship is held at GenCon.

Fourth, is the World Championship, held in November.

That is the official Organized Play tournament schedule. Along with those tournaments are the Seasonal Kits. These fall outside the pyramid structure of Store, Regional, National, World. There are four seasonal kits; Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Stores can order one or more Seasonal Kits. Many stores do leagues where Seasonal Kits are used as prizes (don't know how common this is in LCGs, but it's very common in the miniatures games). Also, stores may have Casual Tournaments where Seasonal Kits are the prizes.

Thanks so much, just what I was looking for!

That's pretty much spot on, with 1 small error.

There are only 3 seasonal kits each year - Spring, Summer and Winterf. There is no fall kit, and stores can order multiples of these kits to run more regular events.

Stores are, however limited to 1 store championships kit, and the competition to host regionals tends to be quite hot. I belive FFG have broken the US up into 16 regions, and each region hosts 2 regionals (based on this year), for 32 evens across your country, meaning depending on where you live, you might have to travel interstate to attend an event.
