Sorcery and adjacent target

By YamiDragoon, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I guess that's an easy question for you guys :D

Or.. most likely.. Zaltyre again.. haha :D

Anyway:

If a (ranged) monster with Sorcery 3 is adjacent to a hero and attacks, rolling 3 range..

can it use/"transmute" all 3 range for extra damage and still hit, or does it have to keep 1 range (at least) to hit?

Also.. does a melee attack need at least 1 range? Just to make sure, don't think it will ever really matter..

Yeah, you are correct, the ranged Attack needs the one range to hit, leaving 2 range left to be 'transmuted'.

No, melee attacks do not check range, even reach or extend do not check. The only exception I can think of is if the target has the stealthy attribute, which requires for three extra range to be rolled for a hit. This includes melee, so a range of four is needed for the melee attack to land. 5 for reach.

Are you sure ?

I always thought Melee or Reach was equivalent to 0 distance so with steathly you had to roll 3 or more?....

You are correct, my apologies! That's what I get for posting this after a long day.

Any Melee (reach/extended) is considered 0 distance, so 3 range is what is required for stealthy.

tim tam slam is correct about the range to an adjacent space being "1" (so you need to have at least 1 range to hit an adjacent space with a ranged attack.)

Felin correctly pointed out that all melee attacks normally require 0 range. Stealthy means you need to roll at least 3 range (reach etc does not matter.)

Note that there is an odd situation where the "Forgotten Sorcery" OL card can grant sorcery to a melee agent (if that agent is in a ranged group of monsters.) In that case, the range required would still be zero.

So- if you are attacking an adjacent target, have sorcery 3, and roll 3 range during a:

ranged attack- you can convert up to 2, because 3 would make the attack miss since the required range is 1.

melee attack- you can convert all 3 range, because the required range is 0.

Okay, thanks for clearing this up, thought so :D
