Garm's Guppy (Re-Paint of the Assault Frigate Mk II)

By LoBrad, in Star Wars: Armada

Hey guys,

LoBrad here, the silent member of the IFF crew, I have been enjoying the hell out of Armada for a while now but I have to admit... I hate one thing... The Assault Frigate MK II model.

I thought it might have been the paint job, so I thought I would sit down and give my Gup a paint scheme to match my favourite Reb Admiral, Garm Bel Iblis. Looking at his card and pictures online, his blue and gold trimmed shoulder pad always caught my eye.Garm-bel-iblis.png

I thought that using those colours would make for a striking, different looking guppy. What do you think?

Up close the highlight lines are a little messy. On the tabletop though...

I quite like the effect.

Garm's Gup is still really dark though, compared to the whites and greys of the rest of my fleet. I am thinking of adding one more extreme hightlight in the top corners of each panel on the blue and on the non-nosecone yellow panels.

What do you guys think?

P.S. I really like the guppy when its panels are highlighted like this. I am thinking of converting a few to be less bulbous and painting them up in a similar, yet less extreme paint scheme.

Yes, thats his personal Guppy.

It deserves a name, don't you think?

Probably so... I should probably come up with one.

that's a big shoulder pad

It looks like Garm went to Berkeley. Just paint a yellow bearclaw on it.

In a vacuum I love it. It doesn't really fit with the rest of the fleet though, unless you get more paint.

But the Guppy, by itself, is fantastic. Excellent work.

Its "Garm's Wrath"!

I like it, very pretty.

Will you paint the other ships of the fleet in matching colours, or a hodgepodge of bright colours? I opted for a rainbow of random colours and heavy battle damage for rebels, and flat nazi grey/red uniform colours for Imperials.

How did you. Get such great lines with the light blue on blue?

I do believe that is a nod to the Katana Fleet. A Blue & Gold motif was the signature of the 200 Dreadnaughts, and Garm was able to procure some for his militia.

I, a Swedish Armada player, absolutely love it! Very nice colors and very nicely done.

Hey, it's the Rebs. They scrounge for what they can get. No uniformity required. :)

Awesome paint job, really stands out nicely on the table!

On Navy blue and Gold, sail right down the field!

Victory is ours today, our line will never yield!

Seriously I really like it!

Really nice job, especially on that rich yellow! Strange that seeing it in those colours makes it look really 40k Eldar, which is not a criticism at all, just hadn't occurred to me before...

Wow, beautiful paint job on that thing.

As for more highlights, it depends I guess on what you want it to represent? Is it supposed to blend in at least a little bit with the rebel rank and file colours, or stand out as a command ship?

I like it. Yellow is my favorite color and this blue/yellow combo works well.

I painted mine ultramarine primer. Looking at going yellow on one and red on the other. Just in different panels. I do like yhe section of grey panel and will try that out. Think i go alittle bit more dirty.

How did you pull off the yellow? On test i had issue with getting a nice solid yellow.

For some reason the paintjob reminds me of this:

It's well painted but I personally don't like the colours, I prefer your other Assault Frigate. Perhaps if it had a dirtier finish with battle damage etc.?

Wow! Thanks for all the replies guys!

Looks like it is the "Peregrine"Mk II then.

The colour scheme did end up looking very "Blue Angels." I like it!

It sticks out something fierce on the tabletop at the moment but that will change when I add more ships. I like the ragtag feel of the Rebel fleet. In that vein I will be painting ships using a variety of colours. (Other than white, light grey and red) Although I will be repainting some ships using those colours too. I think my next step is to paint some fighters. Again though, I am going to go for lots of bright colours for different squadrons. I think.

As for painting. I used a Citadel base blue over black. Dorn Blue maybe? I think that is the name... Whatever it is it is close to the old "royal blue." I washed the whole ship with a black wash and repanelled the base colours back on. I then added a light grey to base blue colour to get my highlight colour. I did yellow the same way but used the old Foundation Paint: Iyandan Yellow as a base coat.

Love your work, and I don't just mean on IFF!

The blue and clear gold is a bold choice as those are pretty vibrant colours next to the usually washed out or grungy looks of grey and ivory that exemplify a lot of rebel fleets. I'm totally on board with both the colour combination and the usage for flagships in particular.

It's solid technique, great finish, nice lines on it too. I wouldn't worry about the ultra-straight lines in particular, but if you really want to show off the leading edges, the small L shaped highlights on the upper corners can work when used in moderation. The usual extreme highlighting has its merits, though I don't think it's essential. Well LoBrad, I can't wait to see what else you've got up your sleeves. Some repaints and especially conversions are always awesome.

As for paints... close to regal blue, hmm, Mordian if it's the new line and Kantor blue maybe? I figured that was the Iyandan yellow, man I do love that colour (and Averland Sunset which replaced it, though there are differences in hue). As I said, it's a bold choice that I think paid off. Any plans on doing a similarly patterned set of squadrons?

I really like this! Well done

That my dear Sir... Is one awesome looking frigate. I'll use a repainted frigate anytime.

I think you are a bit over-highlighted already. Don't worry about its contrast to other ships, that's the point.
