Working on a dice roller

By forrely, in Dark Heresy

So I've been trying out building a dice roller for dark heresy rules with java's swing code and the netbeans IDE. I only really have one year of a java course so my coding is fairly limited, but the program seems to work so far heh. It's pretty simple at the moment, but I'm still expanding on it. here's a pic of how it looks so far i108.photobucket.com/albums/n10/forrely/skullrollersample.jpg

I've put in a preset feature so people can switch between settings quickly, and I am still adding in more options. Right now, many of the options are in there just for ease of use since many(red dot sight, mighty shot, etc) are things that can be calculated beforehand and simply added to the "modifiers" or "damage" fields. I will likely include more eventually, but my first priorities are adding in things such as reliable, unstable, overheats, and other things that cant be accounted for in those fields.

My questions are: What sort of features would be most wanted in this? Is there a better replacement already out there? Where would be a simple place to "host" this sort of small project so that people could comment or list bugs?

I'm still a bit new to java but ill do what I can.

Good work, looks quite nice.

I've got three propositions:

1. Instead of typing them each time in the "other modifiers" section, it would be great to have the -60 to +60 modifiers in a scroll bar, buttons or something.

2. It would be nice to be able to test the other abilities (WS, S, T, Ag, Int, Per, WP, Fel), that way "presets" could be used for different NPCs.

3. A way to track ammo.

Looking forward to use your app it sure would make my GM life easier happy.gif

1. I suppose a down menu or something would be fairly easy to put in there

2. I'm not completely sure what you mean by testing the other abilites. Do you mean like having a couple fields to put stats in, and then being able to have a 1d100 rolled off against any stat you choose? It sounds interesting and doable, itd be nice for easy degrees of success too.

3. also a good idea, itd be just another field that gets updated each time you fire. it sounds like you're going to be using this for npcs alot, so perhaps I can have it keep track of the total, and current ammo for each preset.

It is exactly what I meant ;)

That would be great.

I'm sure alot of folks around these boards would appreciate such an app.

If you you need a place to host your software you can head on to Dark Reign , it is a great fan site.

I like it. I will definitely try using this for my next game. Although, nothing beats the visceral feeling of rolling your trusty favorite dice, I'm sure this may save alot of time.

Thanks for this. Nice job.

I have the body hit locations working now and the new version can be downloaded at dh-skullroller.wikispaces.com/

I was going to write some suggestions earlier in this thread before you made the functioning version, but apparently I don't have to since it got pretty much everything I want. Good job mate, this is definetly useful! happy.gif

And I'll force one of my friends to bring his lap top for gaming sessions and use this software when im the GM (since I don't have a lap top of my own lengua.gif ). This way I won't have to roll physical dice for every attack the NPC's are doing.
