Map tiles will be required for Worlds

By tantive4, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hey everyone...we had rumors running around in our local area that FFG Organized Play would be providing pre-printed maps, as the confirmation emails that went out back in June said:

"Thank you for registering for the Imperial Assault World Championship! Your name is now on the guest list, you do not need to provide a ticket on site. Check-in for the event starts at 9:30 am, the tournament will start promptly at 10:30 am. Please provide your own tokens, figure, command deck, and two copies of your army list."

...as the one thing left off of the list were map tiles.

Well, I sent a tweet out to @FFGOP and they responded saying that in accordance with Army Building Rules on page 4 of the tournament rules, yes, we would need to provide map tiles.

I just figured I'd give everyone a heads up as people were thinking about what they needed to pack for their trip to Minnesota in a few weeks.

Figured it was common knowledge that the tiles are required for organized play.

as is common knowledge to bring tokens, figure, command deck, and two copies of your army list...

but they didnt mention the tiles but anything else

Well in that case you should bring your tiles and not your printed maps. Just in case.

okay so where do you find that information about the new maps for Worlds again. is that in the article

I don't see why this would come as a surprise to anyone. The tournament rules clearly state that you need to have the mission cards and tiles for every map in rotation.

If you are going to Worlds and you haven't already bought IG-88, Royal Guard Champion, and Twin Shadows you need to make sure that you do or that you find a friend to mooch from.

i have to disagree the tournament rules state:

"The player with initiative is responsible for providing the components needed to set up the selected Skirmish Mission map. 4. Players refer to the skirmish mission diagram that matches the Mission card selected for the round. Players use this diagram to build the map."

So having a printed out Vinyl Map is not in violation of this...it does not say that you have to have the exact map tiles and said expansion set.

Disagree or not you are still wrong. You have to use official FFG products. Maps you scan and print don't count anymore than do 3D printed miniatures.

Page 5 of the tournament rules.

I think that this is a HUGE mistake on FFG's part. As someone who has been in several IA tournaments, I can say that set-up and take-down is EXTREMELY annoying, frustrating, and time consuming. There is NO reason not to allow printed maps and I sincerely hope that all TO's everywhere explicitly ignore such a ridiculous rule. I have played on printed maps and it was an extreme relief not to have to take down an old map and then painstakingly rebuild a new one between each and every battle.

FFG, listen to your customers and allow printed maps!

I don't like it either (we use printed maps exclusively in my area since the tiles are such a pain). But, on p. 5 it clearly states that "Only official Imperial Assault components are legal for use in tournament play."

And, even the part you quote specifically refers to building the map.

Again, while I think the tiles are the worst part of the game, it would be a mistake to not bring tiles to worlds.

You should treat printed maps just like you'd treat modded figures. If you want to bring them, make sure that you also bring an unambiguously legal backup.

Mos Eisley is in the new Expansion?
so you need to have bought the new expansion to play in worlds?
that is poor.

I will just borrow those 2 tiles...there is only one player in my meta who bought the ts box...i just plainly refuse buying this useless box

In Germany there has been no single tournament where you had to play on the original tiles.

At nationals our distributor provided printed maps to play on, and all the regionals were played on printed maps provided by the players.

Hopefully FFG will be teachable, but i don't think so... just look at the prices. The Winner wins a playmat on which u can puzzle...

I agree allowing printed maps would be far easier.

We've somewhat mitigated this problem in our area by offering up a pair of alternate art cards to the first team to get setup and deployed, one for each player so they cooperate and play Star Wars Puzzles. Yeah, there's better ways about it for sure... but given the current constraints this is the best we can do.
