corran horn.... sensor jammer or advanced sensors?

By churchwarden, in X-Wing

Here is the list I have been running, with pretty good success....

Jake Farrell.

Test pilot,

Push the limit,

Veteran instincts,

Chardaan refit.

Autothrusters

28 pts

Gold squadron y wing

R3a2

Twin laser turret

Btl-a4 title

26 pts

Corran horn

Push the limit

Advanced sensors

R2d2

45 pts

Comes out to 99 pts. It's a really fun list to fly. I like advanced sensors for the repositioning barrel roll before I move. It has helped me dodge a couple bombs.also, if need be I can focus/evade then do a green to clear stress for a next turn k. Also, a focus before a k turn is quite nice, and I like the 1 point initiative bid (even though it's not much, it has helped).... But I keep wondering if I should go for advanced sensors instead to help beat the tlt meta. This hasn't been a problem for me so far, since the stress y wing is a pretty big target so I keep my corran horn right next to it for a sorta Biggs like effect, at least in the early game.... I would like some input into benefits of running the sensor jammer on horn instead.....it is 1 point more, so I would also lost that initiative bid if it comes to that....

In general, I like Sensor Jammer more and more these days. It has two possible effects: it either forces your opponent's action choice (which is subtle but often powerful), or it saves you a point of damage on each incoming attack (which is straightforwardly powerful).

Here, Sensor Jammer plus Artoo would mean additional protection against incoming damage. It would make Corran moderately stronger in the early game, although you're right that the amount of attention the Y-wing gets makes that a bit less of a concern. You could add it and keep the initiative bid by swapping the TLT for an Ion Cannon Turret.

On the other hand, you're weighing that against both PTL + Advanced Sensors and Fire Control System (which you should be considering, if your aren't already--it provides a guaranteed target lock for Corran's double-tap!) In your place, I'd experiment with all three configurations, and see which one works best for you.

I'm leaning towards sensor jammer but the only way to know for sure is to play a couple of games in vassal.

I really like the idea of the ion cannon.......hmmmm.....

I will try that too.... I have found the twin laser awesome against turrets, but basically just a stress dealer versus aces. Since he is stressed himself always he never gets any modifiers....

FCS

SJ is kind of required for Corran in this environment. R2-D2 can't save you if you're taking 3-4 damage from TLT's most rounds.

I am playing exactly same build with FCS (and played AS Horn).
It is matter of taste, I think.
SJ better VS swarms and TLT-builds, FCS grants more damage.

FCS

Yep. Don't get cute.

List looks like a lot of fun for sure! If your open to a different take on corran horn I suggest the following

Corran

Vi

Fcs

R2d2

Hull upgrade

This is good for several reasons, and I play tested him into this build so it's effective. PTL is always scary to me in this meta, tlt r3a2 and big ships with rebel captive just nullify it too often. Plus at pilot skill 10 you are shooting before all the imperial aces, vader, sootier, whisper, and with sith lords being a very real thing, that matters a lot. Fcs because it's free actions and is really effective with his ability, advanced sensors is better with ships with a crappy dial so they can still get their actions. Sj is good for sure but I feel with this set up you don't need it, and a good player can play around it with decent results. The hull upgrade because of bombs and because of advanced homing missiles, one direct hit and he is out no matter how many shields r2d2 returns to you

Corran

Vi

Fcs

R2d2

Hull upgrade

So you're suggesting pretty much the Corran build that has dominated the meta for yonks, with a slight change by swapping out the EU for a HU.

Well yeah, lol, what can I say if it ain't broke don't fix it lol. Trust me this build just feels so solid, and you can get so much more out of r2d2 having that hull upgrade, it gives you that much more cushion. I've died too many times to direct hit on corran. This way even if you get direct hit you can survive to still shoot your second tap, and then gain shields back and run away for a turn. All with free target lock so you can still focus up. Just give it a try one game, I'm sure you will enjoy it

Poe :P

I'm gonna try the fcs Corran horn.... I also might try the ion cannon....seems like it might be a good fit. That saves up 2 points for initiative bid or a flechette torpedo on ps10 horn.....hmmm.... More choices...

FCS Horn is useful for the double tap (assuming you don't kill the target with your first shot)... but if you can get rerolls elsewhere, it frees up your system slot

Corran Horn - Lone Wolf, Sensor Jammer, R2-D2

Corran Horn - Predator, Sensor Jammer, R2-D2

Corran Horn - Veteran Instincts, Fire Control System, R2-D2

Corran Horn - Push The Limit, Advanced Sensors, R2-D2

There's plenty of ways to build everyone's favourite E-Wing... but when you're potentially shooting every other round, I think adding some guaranteed defence can be a big help

Lone wolf is not a good option in this build, since I run him beside my y wing, and let Jake flank by himself. The y wing is a pretty big target so he gets shot at first, which leaves horn for the end game. I've been running the advanced sensor ptl version to some success. It gives decent maneuverability since he can barrel roll first, and take an evade of need be. ... Sensor jammer was the big question since focus fire makes him die quickly, but a hull upgrade might be worth the switch.

Advanced Sensors all the way. If Corran gets blocked he loses a lot of his advantages and becomes an easy target, AdvS helps you get out of such traps. Also two premove actions with PtL followed by a green move to regen a shield and shed the stress is quite awesome :)
