Hey check out my blog post on my FLGS's 40pt Small Fighter League
40 Point Small Ship League
That's a neat idea. I might suggest this next time I end up playing a three side match, since it would help keep things less cluttered.
I can't help but think that the single ace lists ought to come at some sort of premium, though... Soontir Fel would be nearly unstoppable in this format.
I don't think this will fly (pun intended). It may have worked at one time, but these days there are quite a few aces that would be nearly invincible in this kind of format, let alone Soontir. Corran Horn with a R2, Poe with R5-P9, etc. Unless you create a ban list or maybe develop some sort of special rules like double asteroids and/or asteroids move at the end of each round, I think there's going to be a lot of stalemates unfortunately.
Edited by Darth LandyI haven't played any store games (just with my friends) But I feel like this would be more fun than slugging it out with 100-point squads.

Do not underestimate the power of ions. Especially turrets.
Here's an idea to add a little bit of randomness and possibly mitigating the lethality of a ridiculous PS. Before planning maneuvers, have each ship roll a d6 and add the pilot skill to the number that shows up. This new number (2-15ish) can be used for the round to determine activation and shooting. It means that Wedge will not go after everyone under the sun and adds some viability to PS6 and 7 pilots.

but that mitigates the whole point of pilot skill. I think having to choose between 1 expensive or a couple low cost ones is good. the person with the three low skill ships will just have to use tactics.

That's the idea. But PS is still important. PS1-3 will never activate after PS9. 4-6 will rarely. Even 7 doesn't have great odds for activating before PS9. If you think the variance is too high, a d4 or a d3 can be used. This issue I'm saying to get around is that fact that Soontir will always activate after Poe. A smart player with Soontir will never get shot. With a variable PS, Soontir does not remain invincible. A lucky roll can give the opponent a chance to get him in arc. A slim one, but it does mean that one high level pilot won't necessarily dominate the field.

Veteran inscitcs would also be a viable option. let's say you are using Poe for instance. because he is probably the only ship you will be using, slap veteran insticnts on him, problem solved! ( I would still take Soontir)
@Sir Orrin
I agree, you always have the option of VI, which is an awesome card. I realize that I would be messing with the system by adding a marginally randomized initiative system. My goal was consider that PS becomes much more valuable when there are fewer ships on the table, especially in the case of arc dodgers. One of the observations of the op was that high PS aces were sweeping up wins more than any other lists. I just wanted to propose something that might give other lists a fighting chance, even if it were marginal.

That's totally true. But the crowd of us that are playing in this league are all implicitly taking a very casual approach, changing lists most days and flying all sorts of stuff, not just the 'best thing' to fly.
I don't care if he's outdated. I would fly Soontir. He's my man. or maybe a Tie phanotm
Miranda with 3PO and a TLT anyone?

Your fully decked out Poe monster is pretty far from "casual". ![]()
How about Nera Dantels + deadeye + b-wing/e2 + recon specialist + adv. prot. torp. + extra munitions = 39 points ![]()
