Lately with so much of the new ship's artwork showing off ships flying in atmosphere as opposed in space, I got to daydreaming that maybe there'd an expansion to the rules that supported planetary surface battles. Then my friend post's this link on Facebook http://www.beastsofwar.com/eventslist/live-blog-xwing-endor/. I own and play X-Wing, Imperial Assault, and Armada. The only "scale" missing is a vehicle/army sized ruleset and this would totally fill the void. It just looks so cool!
If FFG made something like this, they'd have all my money.
"A way" to combine atmospheric combat, space combat, and ground combat using the X-wing rules and basic mechanics -- see SWXW: Ground Assault.
I'd totally love a system to give us the air/ground battles of Hoth and Endor on a scale larger than Imperial Assault offers. It's the gap in FFG's Star Wars line.
Edited by HawkstrikeI would ask the FFG Santa Claus for a stand alone "planetary/ground assault" miniature game that is also compatible with X-wing. Same scale and basic play system. The core set would include plenty of models (unlike the Xwing core) and the expansion packs would be planet themed with enough troops, vehicles and aircraft for all three factions. No small expansion pack blisters, just big boxes.

I like it, though I'd be OK with expansion pack blisters if they followed the Imperial Assault model: you get everything you need for a wave in a box, but some of the elements are counters instead of miniatures. You only need to buy the expansions if you want minis for everything (or the different missions or cards that come with the expansion). Add a little more campaign emphasis by taking mission ideas from IA and objective mechanics from Armada and we'd have a great game that could be played just for battles or for a cinematic campaign.
Don't lie, FFG already has direct access to your wallet.
Like so many of us.
looks cool..but would be hard to make it feel right. the speed difference between an x-wing and an at-at would be huge. If you did a 1 straight with the at-at, the x would go maybe 15 straight. So you would need a massive board if you wanted to get the feel close.
It might work if you make it into sets of 3 game rounds. The air units set dials in all 3 rounds, but ground units only set dials in the 3rd round, but they are able to take actions in all 3.
Would be fun to see it on the table though....it does look super cool
I knew it would happen! Didn't I say it all along?
A 6mm terrain set custom-built with X-wing in mind!
I have seen the future, and in it not space, but land, is the final frontier.
I want the ground game to have a larger scale models but still part of the x-wing system. Idea being that on the table you would use extra flight stems to make the fighters taller and closer to the eye. Making it more of a forced perspective.
Pre painted vehicles with raw troops would be awesome. Small hoth starter set meant to pair with a single x wing starter.
When I can drop a squad of Stormtroopers out of my Lambda to occupy the forward hangers while covering with interceptors and supporting with bombers and Punishers, I will burn my entire GW collection laughing.
I started a thread on something similar, though I was more interested in doing urban (6mm) terrain. I like the idea of Endor but I think that in able to get a good terrain density with trees, you'd end up making it almost impossible to play a game.
EDIT: To be clear, I looked through the entire page (though I didn't watch ALL of the videos). Their table was fantastic, the Imperial base is spectacular, and the game looked like a lot of fun... it just didn't look like Endor to me. It looked like someone playing X-Wing on their WH Fantasy (or whatever they're calling it nowadays) table. Scale is a big portion of that; 1/270-scale sequoias would be 8-12" tall, give or take.
Edited by SFC SnuffyIt's called Future War Commander with Micromachines and Ground Zero Games 6mm figures (though I'm betting there's a lot of 6mm WWII figures that'd mix in well).
Edited by GreatMazinkaiserBack in the day when GW still supported Epic 40K, Forge World made an air combat game set in the 40K universe called Aeronautica, and later they made rules so that the Aeronautica minis could be compatible with Epic 40K ground armies. So it is very possible to do.
Just off the top of my head if they do make a ground based game, all they need to do is have an "air phase" in which all the ships move. Instead of using dials, just go ahead and let each flying ship make 3 or 4 moves using the regular template to simulate the ship's speed relative to the ground units... or something.
