Leaving the battlefield

By Capt Conscript, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My daughter made a move last week that I am not sure is legal. Her TIE fighter was near the edge of the playmat and activated a turn away from the edge. Her starting and ending point were on the playmat. But as the base moved along the turn template, a corner of the base was beyond the edge of the playmat. Is this legal?

Thanks

That's legal. The template is allowed to leave the play area as long as the ship's base ends up (and starts) completely inside the play area.

Rules Reference Page 11:

"If a ship executes a maneuver or performs an action that changes its position, the ship is not destroyed if only its maneuver template is outside the play area."

Further, bases do not move along the template (unless you bumped and are backing up to figure out where you actually end up). A ship is picked up from one end of the template and set down at the other. Only the width of the template matters for the purpose of hitting obstacles or bombs.

Bears repeating, as this is something that seems to trip up newer players all the time.

Thanks!

Seems like your daughter is going to be a decent Imperial player!

We shall see. She wanted to play as Luke Skywalker last night. She is only 8, so I have time to change her mind.... ;)

Playing with a 9 year old, and not having played that often yet, we have the rule that when you unintentionally fly off the board you are not removed from the battle. You allowed to return, but only with the fastest possible maneuver. Upon reentry you are both stressed and may not use your weapons that turn.

So there is a harsh penalty for flying off, but its not as frustating as loosing the ship (and probably the battle). After all only kids, and the game should be fun, not a too frustrating experience -the penalty still ensures you learn to fear the game area's edge.

Great idea! Thanks.

We have a 10-year old in our local group who routinely kicks everyone else's butt, and we're not letting him. The kid's a natural. It's scary how efficiently he flys Brobots or Fat Dash/Corran builds. He remembers *every* upgrade, EPT, and special ability. All the time.

And I bet he's pretty unpredictable with his maneuvers
