I am brand new to the game. Having a great time playing with my kids right now. As I am buying more ships, it is becoming quite obvious that a storage solution is needed. I am sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I could use some help. I do not want to buy one solution, only to find that it is not going to work as my fleet grows.

Is a foam storage solution better than a set of Plano trays?

Is it better to store the ships attached to their bases? I am concerned that the repeated removal of the stand will damage the model.

If you prefer foam, which brand and why?

I will be building my fleet with both Rebels and Imperials so we can have lots of casual games with the kids.

I'm using a couple of multi-compartment cases that I picked up for $10 each.

The case has spaces for 21 ships and they have removable partitions. I've taken some of the partitions out of one and the extra long space holds my templates and ruler. The top section holds my dice and asteroids and other sundries. I keep all my cards and tokens in another box that also holds my Slave I and Millennium Falcon. I've cut some foam for my B-wings and the one K-wing I've got, but the rest of my ships just go straight in on their stands.

I hear the Plano is a good way to go and very popular, because their options are excellent. But they're a bit expensive in New Zealand.

Basically, check out your local discount stores, K-mart, Walmart, hardware, etc. for a fishing tackle type box, and you're likely to find something that will work.

It's considerably more expensive than tackle type boxes but I feel in the grand scheme of things it's worth paying for that extra protection it offers. They're great at bringing out new foam when new ships are released too.

I have the Hardcase for storage and a smaller bag for a couple i lists when i head out to the shop

No. I store the bases and pegs separately.

Plano 3700 tackle box. Pick one up anywhere fishing supplies are sold. Best $30 or so I ever spent on this game aside from every ship.
