Call of the Ravens Summon Card

By NarakuVI, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello everybody

I am running a campaign as an Overlord, and I decided to give the Unkindness class a chance.

My question is, does this card count against the 15 card limit for the deck? It stays constantly on the Overlord's side, but does it count as one of the 15?

(I am sure somebody has already asked this, but I can't find the thread.)

Thanks in advance :)

As I've always played it, we do not count the Call of the Ravens card against the 15 card limit for your deck. It is never shuffled into your deck or drawn from your deck, so I've always considered it not part of your deck requirements. The deck limit rule is there so that you can't pair down your deck too much to only the best cards like Frenzy and Dash. Since this card doesn't help add bulk to your deck, it makes no sense for it to count against the limit.

However, it is an Overlord card that you are bringing into the quest, so it gets fuzzy, even if the rules' intent is clear.

I've never heard a definitive ruling on this, so it might be worth submitting the question to FFG (e.g. Can the Overlord take 14 cards + Call of the Ravens) as their deck into a quest.

The rules are clear on this but easy to overlook.. :) See top right of page 4 of the manor of ravens rule book under Overlord servants. You must have 15 cards in addition to the summon raven card.

Also worth noting that it does not give credit toward buying the two/three point cards. You must have 2 other one pointers in addition to the summon raven card to get a 2 point skill.

Ah, my instincts on this were right.

Cool, thanks Ben :) Good catch.

Wow, this is new. It makes Unkindness deck a little bit worse in my eyes. I have never played with it, and it is hard to predict how much trouble it can give to heroes, but looks like ''all in'' is needed to make this class good in act 2

The flock is a great way to harass heroes. It is its own monster group and is allowed to perform the same action as any other group (e.g. open doors). It works really well with low health monster who reinforce at the beginning of your turn and as it spawns adjacent to a monster it sometimes gains the additional step deciding upon win or lose. In conjunction with heal it means sometimes an additional monster for free. I like the flock but dislike the way the other unkindness cards have to be drawn to come into effect and are discarded upon death of the flock.

The one time a player used the Ravens as OL, he only took the summons card, and no other and he used it very effectively, killing off monsters that would reinforce, replacing them with a fresh 4hp monster. This would often allow him to add two monsters instead of just one, and although the damage was low for act 2, he had managed to limit the heroe's searches, so none were heavily armoured against the Raven's strikes.

This seems to be the consensus. The summon card is nice but the rest of the cards are not worth getting. I like a few of the deeper ones but the 1 cost cards are junk so the deeper ones never get bought.

Thank you for feedback, is raven OK in act two? Without other unkindness cards

The summon card is still nice in act 2. It gains a yellow die and rolls BRY ~+1h. Still very nice on its own. You will no go wrong with that one. Just cannot say the same with the rest of the cards.
