By Toqtamish, in Star Wars: Armada

Finally! Kinda disappointed that the top 8 only get one 3x3 mat...Way to try to sell more mats FFG.

Those dice and range rulers though, mmmmm.

Not worth the plane ticket from China to the USA.

If it were actually a world championship, they would hold it in a transport hub like London, Abu Dhabi or Hong Kong. Not Minnesota.

The company is based in MN, also they are close to an International Airport.

It's a World Championship because Continental Champions get first option of attendance, not proximity to a larger international airport.

That Tarkin card is awesome. Wish I could go.

Also, those dice are great, and the week after worlds you'll be able to buy a set on Ebay for 100-200 bucks!

Tarkin... The admiral I am the least likely ever to use. That's too bad.

Oh well, that trophy will look really sweet wherever I put it.

I sooooo want that Endor playmat! Don't suppose there's any chance of them selling it separately later on though :(

Also that Tarkin card!

Yeah that Endor mat needs to be released for sale at some point it is gorgeous!

The United States has a long tradition of holding 'World Championship' games, and only occasionally inviting other countries.

You gotta problem with 'dat?

Just having returned from Minneapolis, I do have to say that it's a good place to do this sort of thing. It doesn't bug me in the slightest.

Also, if you count the number of FFG-game players in a 2000-mile (or 3000km) radius, I doubt you could find a better location.

Never going to get to worlds...the plane alone would cost £700+ for a return ticket. Thats some nice swag though!

Plus this is the cheapest option for FFG by a significant margin. Think of the costs for them to host it outside the local area. Travel accommodations, hotels, things like that. Using the resources they already have means they can provide a better overall experience.

I've heard that they'll probably be booking a venue for next year's Worlds though. I think having three extremely popular Star Wars games is really taxing their ability to host in-house, lol.

If they held it somewhere more accessible they'd make more money from attendees, for two reasons:

i. If it was somewhere more people could afford to get to they could have more attendees

ii. If the location was cheaper for attendees who already come to get to then FFG could raise the entrance fee without it costing the attendees any more, on average (would cost some people more, obviously, if they happened to live near the old venue)

I'd have thought that would more than cover the costs of using a remove venue, from FFG's point of view.

Yeah, they could make up the heavily increased costs of hosting in another city - but no city is without problems, and this city is much more convenient to host it in. Plus, seeing as how they are looking at a venue they can increase their player count, and still save a lot of money by not hosting it in a different city.

Judging by the fact that all three Star Wars games some through their tickets in hours, I don't think that FFG is worried about the fact some people won't be able to travel to MN - because they can fill a venue with people who are able to travel (or already live here - hell, I know quite a few local players who missed the sign-up, so there is expandability even in just the local market.)

I guess I just don't see any motivation for them to hold it in another city - sure, maybe more people could go, but it's looking like they'll be able to sell plenty of tickets right where they are, which is a huge money-saver.

... the greatest prize in gaming, the chance to design a card for Star Wars: Armada!

Does this also include cards for ships and squadrons?

Do they have to make the models for the Gunboat if I would create a card for Maarek in one?

Just wondering... ;)

Nope, you'll have to get your choice approved by Disney/Lucasfilm. Gunboats seem to be persona non grata there for whatever reason, based on their continuing lack of appearance in new novels or X-Wing.

I think the more comprehensive wording is "help them" design a card, lol.

Quite right :D

... so Mickey Mouse as an X-Wing pilot would get Disney's approval I guess? :P

"Red pants, standing by."

oh man that swag is sweet
