More Recycled Alternate Art Promos - more flavor needed!

By Rebelinst, in X-Wing

I'm left scratching my head after the Alternate Art Cards were announced for Worlds and the Winter Kit.There are so many options and it seems like the some pilots keep popping up.

For those of you keeping score at home, we are now up to 3x of:

  • Luke; game night kit over-sized, regionals movie still, nationals art
  • Boba Fett; game night kit over-sized, world movie still, regionals S&V art
  • Han; game night kit over-sized, game kit movie still, worlds art
  • Vader; game night kit over-sized, worlds movie still, winter game night art

All of these Star Wars characters are all popular "in universe" and on the table. With 8 waves to their credit, FFG needs to stop recycling the same Alternate Art subjects. This game is deep, shouldn't the alternate art cards diverse be as well?

I expect that the marketing department at FFG is keeping track of the ratios of certain cards showing up in official game play. I also expect that cards which are being used the most will receive alt art versions long before cards that are not being used very much. Diversity is great, but pleasing the majority makes more sense than pleasing the minority (except in universities and politics, where pleasing the minority can be spun into supporting the underdog/under-represented).

  • Han; game night kit over-sized, game kit movie still, worlds art

I have both the film and over-sized version at home, but have yet to find a picture of the artwork from the worlds promo. Can anybody help me out and share a picture of it?

Thanks!

I suspect a lot of this is simply to give newer players a chance to get alternate art cards of the most popular Star Wars characters. A Luke Skywalker or Boba Fett card is a bigger draw than, say, Etahn A'baht.

Also, on the subject of Boba, the most recent alt art card was for a different version, so that's not quite the same thing as the other pilot's examples.

These are popular movie characters, recognizable from the films. I don't find this surprising at all.

I imagine we will be getting Poe at some point in the next year.

Intra for Worlds this year, about a month from now. There is a preview article that shows some of the set but not the full card (at least not at a legible size).

Alright, I see - thanks a lot, much appreciated :)

Doesn't it devalue the other versions if you have several alternatives of the same card...?

There is no denying that those 4 pilots/ characters are popular. I've never thought that the kits alone attracted new players to X-wing. However, the kits / prizes absolutely strengthened the existing player base. FFG never needed household names to do that.

Don't you think that its time to move on from those same 4 characters?

Yeah, would be cool to get movie still alt arts of Garven or Dutch or Arvel or whatever. Or to get rereleases of some of the more hard to obtain expensive movie still promos, like Vader and Lando and Imperial Boba. I know some people have paid good money for Lando's and Darth Vader promos, but F them haha.

The drawing alt arts are okay, but for characters that are in the movies it's better to have the movie stills IMO.

Considering that the original Vader movie still card from World's likely has around 200-300 copies in existence, tops, I have no problem with them doing a new card with a much wider release that I can actually get my hands on.

The fact that the art on it actually looks cool is a nice bonus.

I just started playing this year. I played in one regional and wasn't good enough to get the Boba. I love the Tycho I did get as I am a big X-Wing novel fan. So I don't mind alt art for non-mainstream pilots. That said, I would love to get my hands on a Luke and am looking forward to going for a Vader. I know Ebay is always a possible option, but I like earning things myself when possible.

I have to mildly disagree, I don't care much for the movie stills, only because everything else is art. It just makes them look slightly out of place. But what do I care, if it's worth more than about $10 I'm just going to sell it so I can buy more ships, so, whatever the rich people like the most is fine with me. :P

No one uses luke. Not compared to Corran Horn at the time. Or many other pilots. This is not a factor. I think they just wanted to give the main characters the same original art treatment as EU characters just for s&gs. Nothing more, nothing less.

Look on the bright side new movies more stills

I'm guessing that the lack of movie stills is an LFL / Disney licensing thing. I'd expect original artwork until we see otherwise.

It would be coll to see some wave 1 stuff like Howl, Horton, or Backstabber. Heck, I'll even take 3 different Corran card variations over the next 3 kits in a row, just give us someone new!

For casual its no problem to transport the Armada Howlrunner pic over to the X-wing Howlrunner card. One marking, one clip, one paste in programs like Gimp or Photoshop, print out, laminate, done.

An official one, would be so much cooler, of course!
