Scum Escalation - Elite Kihraxz and Y-Wings

By Jarval, in X-Wing Squad Lists

After some experimentation with Latts Razzi that has left me a bit unconvinced by a YV-666 at 60 points, I've been looking throughtfully at a Y-Wing and Kirhraxz elites list. From the few test games I've played with it, Kavil is a notable threat (almost a garunteed two damage per turn), and the Black Sun Ace and Talonbane both do a lot of work.

I've not yet had the chance to play the 120 or 150 point lists, but I think Engine Upgrade will do a lot for Talonbane (if I could get it in before 120 points, I would), the Z-95s provide some extra volume, potential blockers, and can help cover for Kavil's range one weak spot, and Drea hopefully helps to pull some attention away from Kavil and Talonbane - or at least hangs back and gives them some long range supporting fire.

My gut instinct is that this list is at its weakest at 90 points - at 60 points it's packing a lot of punch, and at 120 Talonbane has the Engine Upgrade that lets him make the most use of his pilot ability and Predator.

Fair. :)

What, in your 150 point list, is your key to victory?
Kavil and Talonbane. Talonbane (particularly after the addition of the Engine Upgrade at 120 points) is good for hunting other high PS aces or dealing a lot of damage where needed. Kavil hits with remarkable regularity, which is good for picking off arc dodgers and removing Stealth Devices.
What, in your 150 point list, is included to stave off lists that can exploit your weaknesses?
The Z-95s and Black Sun Ace are there to back up Kavil and cover that range one dead zone of the TLT. Plus some PS1 blockers are handy to have to clog up some movement lanes.
What, in your 150 point list, is ultimately included because you had no better purpose for the points?
Drea is the point where I feel less certain. She seems like a good platform for a TLT, as there's the ability to modify both rolls if needed, but I'm not sure how much it adds to the capabilities of the list overall.

I think I'd upgrade Drea to part of your Key to Victory, but being that you're unsure, Wave 4 is a good spot for her.

Otherwise, well done and looks fun.

Predator on Talonbane is a good combination with EU, as you'll always be able to modify your rolls. EU's also very strong for getting those Range 1 shots offensively, or getting to Range 3 when they're attacking you.

Lone Wolf might yet be better than Predator, as it lends you better defense, but you'll find yourself needing to modify your attacks more often.

Note that Kavil's bonus die is a bit wasted on the TLT (As it doesn't actually translate to more damage), but it helps guarantee damage against the high-mitigation pilots.

Also, the TLT Y-Wings are going to want to use Target Lock as their actions more often: it's superior to Focus when you have multiple attacks in a round and only care about the "To Hit" rather than the "Damage" stat.

Predator and R4-B11 are possibly sub-par upgrades with that in mind.

Added Defense could be worth, but there's surprisingly scant options here.

Having flown the 60. 90 and 120 point versions of this list last night (we ran out of time for 150), I've been pondering on a few things.

Talonbane is great, but only when you've got both EU and Predeator. With just Predator, he's quite vulnerable, and has not range control, which means you really have to be pretty prescient about what your opponent is going to do to get the most out of him. I've not tried flying Drea as yet, but I'm seriously considering swapping her in for Talonbane at 90 points, and putting the fully upgraded Talonbane in at 150.

I've pondered Lone Wolf instead of Predator on Talonbane, but I think it'll be quite tricky to reliably use once you get to the 120/150 point brackets, and the number of friendly ships on the board starts to add up.

Kavil + Predator is overkill a lot of the time to get damage through, but utterly invaluable when your opponent's list includes a Wired + Autothrusters Tycho. That's a hard ship to hit! :) I'm a big fan of the "per attack" and action-free nature of Predator, which gives you a lot of flexiblity about what Kavil does on any given turn without worrying about losing all dice modification.

R4-B11 is something I'm not sure how it's going to work. It is quite tempting to swap it out for Unhinged Astromechs on both of the Ys to make them a bit more manueverable, and open up those speed 3 turns...

Agreed, there's a real lack of defensive upgrades for Scum. I'd really like to improve the survivability of elements of the list as it's all quite vulnerable to being focused down by concentrated fire, but there doesn't seem to be much available on that front.

Overall, the list seems to be working for me. 5 wins to 2 losses so far, which I'm relatively pleased with.
