Starting Character Advice

By StarkJunior, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey all,

Starting a new game here soon and while I have some idea of where I want to go with the character, I'd like to put out a feeler for some additional advice.

I'm going to be playing a Mandalorian Human Bounty Hunter in the game - obviously we're using the wonderful Spark of Rebellion sourcebook - and I know my initial Specialization will be Gadgeteer, and I eventually want to go into Gunslinger, since his primary weapons will be dual WESTAR-34 blasters. Until we get a Bounty Hunter sourcebook, I might dip into Mercenary Soldier or Commando, to reflect some of the Mandalorian upbringing. I'm leaning towards Commando right now, since I think it fits better.

Anyone have advice on starting Characteristic spread and maybe Skills? Thanks!

I go for spreading stats out myself, a human, 4 scores with 3s. I would think you're going to bored with guns by the time you get into the 3rd spec Joe Gun spec. What do you plan on doing in a session if there is no gun play?

Mechanic, too, likely. He's the co-pilot of the ship the Smuggler captain owns, and I had thought about picking up the Mechanic Specialization from Technician. He's also the Coercion go-to guy.

I always advocate at least one 4 (preferably 2), starting out. Which is one of the reasons so few of my characters wind up being human.

4 Int/Agi Klatooinian or Chadra-Fan are personal favorites of mine.

Humans can have 4 3s or a 3 and a 4 with a spare 20xp for "stuff" -- Possibly Jury Rigged right off the bat and a spare 5xp for something else.

Also try to double-up on skill ranks at character creation, if possible. "Ranks" from career/spec are free, but a free rank 2 is better than a free rank 1.

I think BH gets you all the gun and brawl/melee you need. I'd go for other specs to enhance those other roles you refer to rather than racking up multiple joe gun specs.

Hm, true. I think I'll go with 3BR/3AG/3WILL to start and then build into Enforcer and Outlaw Tech - and whatever we get when the Bounty Hunter sourcebook comes out.

I think if you focus on Gadgeteer you'll find you have plenty there to work on before you move onto other specs.

You've got your career skills to raise, you've got talents for making you a better joe gun, some for coercion, probably the 2nd best brawl talent in the game in improved stunning blow.

Honestly the entire Gadgeteer tree is worth buying. Unless your GM hands out an absolute ton of session xp I would imagine by the time you've focused on your career skills and spec talents those other splatbooks will be out.

Plus I think PCs tend to get seduced by talent trees and forget that just having a high skill rank gets a lot done for you.

We don't get a ton of session XP, no more than the suggestion in adventure rewards - 20-30 at the most, and sometimes a little for additional stuff, but that's about average.

Then I'd say focus on Gadgeteer and I think you'll find it actually gets a lot done for you that your were talking about.

Cool, I think I'll do that. Thanks for the advice!

Njoy.
