Hey there, all. Now, as a disclaimer I was a long time GW player, having got into 40k back in 3rd edition, unfortunately I had to give up that very expensive hobby after the wife and I found out she was pregnant because baby > toys. I just started playing X-wing a few weeks after hearing good things about it for a good year now. Well long story short I loved the way the Imps played and picked up one of every model they had for less than half of what I'd pay to start a 40k army.

So thank you FFG for making a great game and keeping it affordable enough for those of us who have a LOT of other expenses.

Sometimes I think this place is more a 40k recovery group then anything else. You'll find you are far from the only person who has jumped ship from 40k/WFB to X-Wing and other games.

If you have any rules questions post them on the rules boards, we're really good about answering questions. Also check out the sticky on the main form for good info.

Welcome fella. Your tale is similar to mine. I was more into the hobby side of GW than the gaming though. Since starting X-Wing .. I have never looked back.

Congrats on the youngster. My super rad wife is 22 weeks and we just had the scan to see the gender. Exciting times.

Jolly good to hear another lost soul rescued from the evil clutches of GW. You'll find this game more popular than you'd have realised, and there's generally no shortage of opponents if you look around enough. And go and browse the Rules Questions sub-forum, because you'll learn more about the game there than actually playing it.

Also, download the FAQ document, as any time you ask a question, you'll be asked why you didn't see it in the FAQ. Some folks here tend to assume everyone knows about it and has read it a dozen times, even if you've just got into the game.

Yup, same here on that account. I look at my 40K now and the only thing I think is "Do I pack it away for the kids to play with it when older? Or do I just try sell it on the cheap and make a few bucks? (To spend on X-Wing of course!)

A lot of us here have left the abusive relationship with GW, each week brings a new reason never to return.

This week two tau drones cost £10, last week £30 for fire warriors.

That company is in its death throws and x-wing will be a big contributing factor as it showed gamers you can have fun with tight rules, you can get value for money and you can communicate and have them listen.

GW pricing is weird:

HH betrayal at calth boardgame is 125 euro for 38 models (30 tactical, 5 termies, a dread and 2 characters, one who is a termy ) and the SM demi compagny is 180 euro for 42 models (30 tactical, 5 assault, 5 devastator a dread and a character)

Sooo why is there a 55 euro differnce for 4 models? (plus you get the boardgame stuff aswell.) Not sure if i should be glad the HH game is cheaper or sad that the demi compagny is so expensive.

I never got further than Blood Bowl (which I still think is brilliant). The amount of investment needed for an army of warhammer fantasy or 40K just chased me away. That, and they canceled Chaos Dwarfs

I still have the original Space Hulk with expansions. My friend had the original Space Crusade and it was a blast. I'll have to pull SH out and see how the kids like it. You know they will wanna be the Space Marines hahaha.

I also had Space quest (the space crusade version released by MB) That was a blast! Had some very tense moments when my marine captain, as last surviving memebr of his squad had to limp back to the entry/extraction point with one health left... constantly stalked by a lone genestealer.. wh. just. wouldn't. die! Only to die 6 spaces away from saftey when the 'stealer finaly caught up.

Ah... good times. Many hours spent playing Space Hulk, Space Crusade and Blood Bowl. And when I got into those games money was really tight, so the fact there was no further investment required made them good value.

I was down at our local wargaming club today and there were two games of 40K going. Nothing but massively huge models on the table. Landraiders, Stormravens, big Ork stompas, a Paladin Knight. It looked nothing like the Skirmish game it used to be. I'd hate to think what those armies cost. I showed up with my entire X-wing collection (of 30 ships) and it would've been the cheapest collection there.

Yeah back then if you wanted to field lots of vehicles, superheavies, Knights and titans you had to play epic.

Nowadays we got regular scale warlord titans!

Woah! I don't even wanna know how much that one costs...

I got into Blood Bowl through a friend. He even bought a Skaven team so I could play with it and liked the fast game at the time.

On a Holiday to the North of England and into Scotland I stumbled past a Warhammer-store that threw out Blood Bowl.

I got the game for £10. Than the store manager said I could grab as much Blood Bowl related stuff as I could from a table, for another £10. The table had already been almost cleared but I happened to grab several star players, a high elf team and a Chaos Dwarf team. Stuck with the pointy hats ever since

Never got into blood bowl despite a friend trying several times to interest me, but it's survived it's squating by GW so people obviously love it.

I'd really like to play mordheim again but no one locally seems interested, I was looking forward to the pc game but a friends warned me off.

Even with X-wing sometimes an old school game of blood bowl can find some time

It has the same capability of creating memorable gaming experiences. Struggling against Goblins with hidden weaponry, those annoying but very fragile wood elves, many grudgematches against the guy who plays dwarfs with your chaos dwarfs and finding out you're evenly matched every game. And the one time you kill off someones star player (Griff Oberwald) and his star-thrower, after which he leaves your house and doesn't show up at the evening of D&D with some friends and you have to explain why...
